Big Ben accused of rape

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/07/21/complaint-gets-very-specific-regarding-interaction-between-mcnulty-roethlisberger/

Star-divide

This situation has been compared to the Kobe Bryant situation a few years ago. The difference is that the accuser has named several other people in the complaint, claiming that they tried to help cover it up.

Funny that ESPN is refusing to report on it, while every other media outlet in the free world has. Of course, if this was a Bengals player, it would be front page material.

What part of this is good?

The part where a woman may have been sexually assaulted?
The part where a young athletes name and reputation may be forever tarnished by false allegations?
How is any of this “good”?

I'll tell ya...

Congrats on your seemingly successful college football career. I too had one. Not that you care. I also don’t care about yours. Congrats on living in Dayton as well. The relvance of that? …I have no idea.

I also don’t care who you’re a fan of. You’re the reason I (and most of America) despise Steelers fans.

The most of America part that doesnt love the Steeler fans right asshole? Im so glad you both are professing your fake college careers. Who cares. That isnt the point. You are glad a woman got raped. Once again, typical conclusion to a discussion with your typical steelers fan. Because obviously outcome of games dating back to 1990 and number of SB rings is the answer to any question, debate or discussion of.. well….. anything.

How should we fix the economy? Win six Super Bowls.

Whats the answer to world peace? Win six Super Bowls.

How should I sell my house in this market? Win six Super Bowls.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

Steelers fan on a Bengals Blog

Why are you loitering around here, douche nuts? I couldn’t care less about anything you posted.

The world despises you. Steelers fans are the biggest classless scumbags on the face of the earth and you are exhibit-A.

The best part is that you aren’t even a true Steelers fan. You just decided to become one because it’s easier to root for the team that wins. Even better is that you think we’re all the ones with integrity issues.

No one likes bandwagon jumpers. Not even Steeler fans do. The true Steeler fans I know would think you’re a turd. And you are.

Please continue to try to “Internet Bully” us into submission. As if we all need more evidence that you are a loser.

Also…please tell us more about your former football career in college. Did you even manage to get your degree? I’d bet no. I personlly though would love hearing about your peformance not just in college…but I met you were magnificent in both high school and the middle school levels of play. Please share these experiences with us as well.

I look forward to your classless response. I know you won’t let me down.

WTF?

by Tommyboy45 on Jul 24, 2009 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

This fires me up

at least you commented on the fact that a woman could have had something life altering happen to here, which I give you credit for. It’s hard to imagine how much something like that can affect someone. I worked in a couple of teen drug and alcohol rehab centers, and the ones that were the worst, that had the biggest uphill battles, were the one who got raped. However to compare that to an athlete’s reputation is absurd. If the charge is found true then it is a problem, but probably won’t have any real long term implications (Kobe Bryant anyone?). If it is found to be false the girl is the only one that will have long term repercussions from this NO MATTER IF SHE IS TELLING THE TRUTH OR NOT!

If it is false then it weakens the substantiation behind every other woman who comes forward with rape accusations, and that is just as bad on her part as if the Bad Ben had done it. No it’s not good, but your loyalty obviously lies with the Steelers, dismissing this already as “False allegations”. Who made you judge and jury? I’m certainly not in favor of these two cents you decided to share.

It took my two years to come up with an avatar and sig
and this is the best I could come up with.

by einman77 on Jul 21, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

what he said..

Whether the allegations are true or not my opinion stays the same, good.

If these accusations had been made about any Bengal players it would be all over ESPN, but since its the steelers they should wait it out and make sure its the truth. Well, everyone else is talking about it…

ET take a second and slloooowww dowwwnn, it’s Big Ben.. if she really had wanted to get away she should have just run, if we know one thing about Ben he is molasses.. plus its Worthlessburger man, I wish Carson’s mom had hit him harder when he was riding his bike last time. Give me the chance and I’d mow him and Quinn over..

As much as I detest (way too mild a word there) the Steelers, he is still innocent until proven guilty. Gah I need to wash my hands now for even thinking about partially defending a Steeler.

by FriarBob on Jul 21, 2009 11:39 AM EDT reply actions

Cause its a load of crap, thats why ESPN resues to report it.

The timing of the lawsuit and the absence of a criminal complaint and a criminal investigation are the most compelling evidence of the absence of any criminal conduct. If any investigation is commenced, Ben will cooperate fully and Ben will be fully exonerated.

by Johnny_S on Jul 21, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

by einman77 on Jul 21, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Who's to say it's a load of crap

I am skeptical of it at this point, mostly because of the security camera part of it. If there are cameras and he asked and you said “yes there are” the first thing I would be doing is heading to the video room and getting that tape.

As to not coming out with it for a year, it is questionable, but many women will not come forward with this kind of stuff right away, if at all. The scrutiny faced, especially when a high profile person such as Big Ben is involved, is not going to be easy to take.

At this point all there is to do is see what comes of it.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on Jul 21, 2009 12:41 PM EDT reply actions

What makes it crap?

Is that she did not file a criminal suit (or make a criminal complaint) she filed a civil suit. And they say there is a lack of evidence.

PS-There wouldn’t be cameras in the room so that is sort of irrelevant.

by Johnny_S on Jul 21, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

She cannot decide whether or not a criminal suit is brought against Ben or not. We don’t even know if she went to the cops first or just went straight for the civil suit (at least I have not seen anything saying she went for the criminal first). If I remember correctly, a civil suit is brought against someone by another person, while a criminal suit is usually brought against someone by the state.

PS- The point about the cameras is very relevant. If there are no cameras, the whole thing falls apart. That is why I am saying I am questioning this.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on Jul 21, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

You have the basics right in your idea of what usually happens, but no. Criminal is just a different case insomuch as it involves a case where the prosecution must prove that the defendent did the crime and is punishable by law. Civil is merely that the defendent cause emotional trauma to the plaintiff. You really dont need to be convicted of a crime (hence why OJ Simpson was acquited in Criminal Court but convicted in Civil Court). The standards are less because there really is no burden of proof.

by gimpsta7 on Jul 28, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

True, but that was not my point.

Everyone is jumping on this because she has filed a civil case. My point was she may have had no other choice. It does make it lost some credibility, but if she did not have the option of making it a criminal case, then civil was her only other choice.

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

by Bengals FTW on Jul 29, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

She had the option. The city is chosing not to prosecute because they see no liklihood that a crime actually occured (they arent saying that, but that is the legal vibe such an action stirs). A woman with mental troubles filing a suit at this point seems very suspect.

But on your point, she had a chance to make it criminal, she had all the evidence that night if it is real. Rape is defined as forcing yourself while threatening physical harm. It would be clear to people, her coworkers?, that things were amis that night and she would have gone in to get checked out or would have gone to the police.

ok IF he gets charged with Sexual assault

which i think was the actual charge. Sex offenders usually get 15-25 years in prison. Knowing that current football players usually get a discount on the sentence( cough cough Donte Stallworth cough cough) and instantly no one would think about Mike Vick or the bengals. Note that if he gets charged no doubt he’ll be suspended and the steelers would suck bung hole.

This much, at least, I 100% agree with. I’m of the (longstanding, BTW) opinion anybody who can be proven beyond reasonable doubt to have committed forcible rape should get a one-way non-pardonable non-commutable ticket to death row.

In my opinion the crime is almost worse than murder, because the victim has to live with the results for years afterward. And it should be punished as such.

I apologize if I lumped in all Bengal fans at any time in my previous arguments on this site as classless or condoning or wanting rape to have occured in this instance. Thank you jsl413 for standing up to your peers and taking their senseless beating for no apparent reason. I hope nothing in your life has made you this sensitive to the subject, but you understand that these comments arent about the player, or the team, they are about the fact that Fans of teams (Not Just the Bengals) are rooting for a rape to have occured and they dont understand why that is wrong. They are looking at themselves and seeing nothing but self righteous glee in the pain of a pontentially innocent man’s life being torn apart, or at a brutalized woman’s pain. This whole issue makes me sick, but the fact that people take joy out of it makes me even more sick.

I was never a fan of Carson Palmer, but I never rejoiced when he was Injured. Sure we poke fun at arrests for speeding, or possessing weed, but those are stupid things that many atheletes do. Look at yourselves and think back on the moment you first realized you first loved a woman, then think about if this happened to her. If you feel glee at the thought of it when it happens to your mother or sister or wife or daughter, then there are problems with you beyond your taste in a football team.

In regard to the headline story here, of couse people aren’t making light of someone being raped, or accusing someone of it. However, it does so happen to be Ben that is getting the heat. When Michael Vick was accused of financing dog fights, I don’t think anyone who was discussing the matter that someone jumped down the throat of the person who wrote the article.

If Ben gets suspended because he gets found guilty of that he is accused of, of course it’s of major importance to Bengals fan. It could mean we have a better chance of making the playoffs.
