NFL Draft Turns into Three-Day Event -- starting on Thursday night?

The NFL moving the NFL Draft to a three-day schedule doesn't make a lick of sense to me. On April 22, 2010, the NFL will conduct the first round of the NFL Draft. On a Thursday night. Saturday was perfect. You could have some buddies over, have a cook out, and debate first round projections. It was a weekend event and it was awesome.

Now?

Now the weekend won't have the first round and the second and third rounds start on Friday night at 6:30 PM. The Draft will conclude on Saturday with rounds four through seven -- of which starts at 10 A.M. So the question now is: what are you going to do on Sunday? I loved rolling out of bed on Sunday, flipping the television on and being bombarded with more draft coverage with a lot of names I never heard of. That never mattered. It was the event I looked forward to, up until Mr. Irrelevant.

Date Day Starting Time Rounds
4.22 Thursday 7:30 PM EST 1
4.23 Friday 6:30 PM EST 2-3
4.24 Saturday 10:00 AM EST 4-7

Do you guys like the new schedule?

It's funny...

When I read through the entire post, I said to myself, “Man, that doesn’t make a lick of sense to me…hey, waitaminit…that’s just what Kirk said, too.”

I don’t get it. Did The Chancellor look at the stellar, record-shattering ratings that the NBA Draft must have generated on a Thursday night and say to himself, “Boy, that David Stern has got it goin’ ON!”

Money-grubbing

This is nothing but a ploy to grab more money. How hard would it be to do the whole thing on Saturday? Not hard at all.

This move allows them to sell more advertising, though. Good job NFL… or should we start to call it the N$L.

This is gotta be the most ridiculous schedule i've ever seen.....

imagine the 25 – 30 prospects that could go anywhere from late round 1 to late round 3….can you imagine the stress they would have to go through waiting ….. 3 freaking days now….

I can’t wait to hear how many minutes each team gets to make their first round selection…

3 yards and a pile of dust

"...how many minutes each team gets..."

Yeah, I hadn’t thought of that. The 10-minute limit this past go-round made the 1st round go like lightning.

So the question now is: what are you going to do on Sunday?

I’m sure Mel Kiper and gang will still have their Sunday slot to get you through the day

I once defended the managerial styles of Jerry Narron after a Reds loss in a bar after a long night of drinking. I wish I could say that I don't remember doing that.

I know why the rest of you hate it. And I sympathize. Sorta. But while I may well be the only person who feels this way, I don’t give a hoot. I love it. About time IMO.

I could also have supported going for Friday night, Sat, and Sunday. But I really am glad that they are splitting up the first round off into its own day. And personally I think Thursday makes more sense. Sure you may have to pick between TV shows, and I suppose I have a tiny bit of sympathy for you guys there… sorta… but the obvious solution is don’t watch the worthless crap on TV the rest of the year. Trust me, your IQ will go up at least 10 points. ;)

OK all kidding aside, I really do like the idea of Thursday night better than Friday night. Fri night might have worked OK but with Thu you’ll have the chance to create yet another “unofficial holiday” and spend the day at work discussing (or dissing) the various teams’ performances around the water cooler. Your boss may not appreciate it but it will be fun.

And the fact that it will be over by Sat night means that then you have all Sunday to discuss it to death on forums like this one and still have a chance to get enough sleep that your boss isn’t ready to kill you Monday morning.

The way I see it, the only loss is that maybe fewer people will be able to travel to NY to watch the whole thing live… but again that’s something I never would have done anyway so I don’t really care there either.

What does this do to draft day?

I don’t want to drive 2 hours on saturday to see my team draft benchwarmers!
