Report: Bengals and Chase Coffman agree to a four-year deal
Chase Coffman, the team's second third-round pick (thank you Justin Smith), agreed to a four-year deal, the club announced this afternoon. When the club released their depth chart, Coffman was listed behind Reggie Kelly, Ben Utecht and Daniel Coats. Provided he does well in camp, and there's no reason to suggest otherwise, Coffman will quickly move up the chart; which in reality, is pointless in July. Just gives us something to chat about.

First mobile post on this BB…duh. Anyway, good point…best thing Justin Smith ever did for the team.

Awesome!
I expect Coffman to be a big part of this offense this season, and hopefully in the future. Utecht is the only thing holding him back, but I think Chase will eventually beat him out.
trickle first, then chase will pour it on
At least that’s what I expect.
Ben is solid and hopefully injury free. He probably gets the nod to be the starting TE, but I can definitely see Chase coming in quitely, innocently into games. Other teams won’t have done much if any work to prepare against him at TE. They will have their hands full with Chad, Coles and Chris. Enter Coffman.
This could get really fun and potentially turn the tables of a close game in our favor.
Coffman
Although Coffman’s numbers were NCAA catches, they are nonetheless consistent for the four years, averaging 10-11 yards per catch. You need that consistency from tight ends, up the field 10 yards, catch the call, first down in crucial situations to sustain the drive; or inside the 10 yard line, line up to block and then swing behind the space cleared by the receivers to catch that TD before linebackers can react. Love it.
Hmm...
Sounds like what we used to need a “possession receiver” for, eh?

Split out
Do you guys think that Coffman would split out while Utecht lines up at tight end?

I don't see it
The Bengals wide outs are too good to need it, and Coffman only goes for 10 yds a pop. What I could see is a 2 TE set with Utecht and Coffman so that a 3-4 D won’t know which TE will block and which will run a route which could slow the pass rush by a second.
Even if he doesn't
I think it would be a good idea. The Bengals don’t have a wideout who’s proven over the middle. Coles and Caldwell are expected to fill in where TJ left off, but I could see Coffman filling in that role as well. Who knows, maybe they could put him in the slot in a Wildcat formation, with Caldwell receiving the snap.
This is our year!
Coles
I watched a Jets/GB replay game on NFL Network a few weeks ago after the Coles signing, and Laveranues caught the ball over the middle again and again and again in that game, taking hit after hit and getting right up. I don’t think you can really say we don’t have a WR who will go over the middle like T.J. used to. Coles has already demonstrated that he will.

Maualuga is signed
According to PFT Maualuga is signed.
I don’t understand what is taking so long with Michael Johnson, the players above and below him are both signed and both are pass rushers. I hope that this isn’t a sign that he will be a diva type player, wanting more than his draft position warrants like Crabtree appears to be.
