Open Thread: Cincinnati Bengals (0-0) at New Orleans Saints (0-0)
Cincinnati Bengals at New Orleans Saints, Aug 14, 2009 8:00 PM EDT
And so it begins. The Bengals kickoff the 2009 Preseason in New Orleans against the Saints. We pointed out earlier on Friday that the Bengals are on a six-game losing streak against the Saints during the preseason, with the last win coming in 1975. A few things to look for, from reader The Dealio.
Injuries: Dan Santucci, Ben Utecht, David Jones, Brandon Johnson, Evan Mathis, Antonio Chatman and Pernell Phillips. Geoff Hobson writes that Rey Maualuga "probably won't be [playing] either as he battles a hamstring problem." Matt Sherry is "may not" either.
Game: Cincinnati Bengals (0-0) at New Orleans Saints (0-0)
Series Leader: Saints, 6-1
Streak: Saints have won the last six.

Third and 10
Palmer, in shotgun, GREAT protection. Palmer hits Chris Henry, about 20 yards downfield, siting in the middle of the zone. Great touch pass. Henry pulls it down and picks up additional yardage. 27 yards total.

First and Ten
Benson takes the handoff, off-tackle to the right. Benson forced to bounce wider outside, trips for a limited gain. Collins called for holding.

Benson runs - then fumbles
Runs off the right side again. Good blocking, good vision on Benson’s part. Picks up decent yardage. Then someone hits Benson with their helmet into the football. Saints return it to the six-yard line.

NICE PLAY
After Keith Rivers stopped Bush at the line of scrimmage — nice tackle, BTW — Brees tries to hit WR on a fade to the left — front left pylon. Since the pass was somewhat of a floater, Hall made up time and swatted the pass.

Dump off pass by the Saints.
Picks up limited yardage. Then on a 19-20 yard field goal attempt, the kicker…. MISSED! :)

First series recap
Palmer has time in the pocket. Each running play called is from the center to the right. Defensively, decent on the one run attempt, Hall had a nice PD (pass defensed) and, well, a little good luck. Game is 0-0.

Third and 7 -- Coles back in
Palmer, in shotgun, hits Coats quickly. About a yard or two shy of a first down. It was a quick pass. Coats, off the right side, sat about 3-4 yards short in zone coverage and picked up a few.

Blitz in O’Sullivan’s face. He avoids and rolls out left and chucks the ball out of bounds. Good job just getting rid of it. 11 seconds left in the half. Keep the clock stopped.

So does Scott, Benson and the o-line. Back ups on the o-line are holding their own too. JTO is better than Fitz, BTW. :)

TD
Entirely thanks to Henry with 2 nice catches on that drive. Caldwell looks good too. Time management like that is going to kill us, though. Carson better stay healthy….
That may have been strategic
Hardly any time. No chance for an offensive play if they return. That type of thing.

Scott. Henry. Chad. O-line play for the most part. Crocker laying wood…as per uszh. Rivers. MJ.
These guys could be special this year if they can keep their heads on straight if they start off poorly.
Between Palmer and JTO
16/22 233 yards passing TD and pick.

At least one person here has some class. I’m sorry but as much as I love Palmer and want the Bengals to win some games despite mikey and all that… but Brees is a better QB. You guys should have seen that sports science episode on the archery target. There are three absolutely elite QBs in the league and Brees is one of them. Palmer isn’t that far behind, but he is behind.
RE:
Wasn’t Brees more accurate than the archer?

Way more. 10 for 10. Olympic archers are 5 for 10 on average.
And he was 5 for 10 on the dot. Olympic archers are 1 for 10 on average on the dead center like that.
Anyone know where I could get a hold of that show?
I’d really like to see that.

Nice hustle
on the interception return by Caldwell: looked very fast in getting back to catch Vilma before he reached the end zone, and by Whitworth to recover the resulting fumble.
Oh I loved the hustle… I just wish the refs weren’t blind dumb and stupid. That was not really a fumble.
I think it was...
he was bobbling the ball before he went down.
RE:
I thought he regained control as he went down. But hey, score one for the good guys. Palmer’s pass was terrible too. Way behind Caldwell.

RE:
They screwed up on the long play by Chad too. He stepped out about 5-6 yards before he went down. But they said he didn’t. I have absolutely no idea how they missed it. Unless there’s far fewer cameras during preseason games, so there’s less views. But that’s a lame excuse.
Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.
by Josh Kirkendall on Aug 14, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Yup. When even the announcers are saying it was blindingly obvious that they blew the call and can prove it on their replays on TV, something isn’t right.
RE:
Well, that’s the thing. It’s the replays they’re missing. Not so much the calls on the field.
