Around SBN: SB Nation NFL Power Rankings for Week 11

Afterthoughts...

As pre season continues, there are certain things starting to unravel before our eyes.  I think it's somewhat unfair to judge a player with only a few months of training camp and only a hunful of real opportunities in pre season games.  Typically, players need at least a year of experience before they start to show their true abilities.  But that's the way the cookie crumbles.  Rookies have to make the best out of their few opportunities.

Star-divide

We can safely assume that without Carson Palmer this year, our season is pretty much over.  O'sullivan is mediocre at best and Palmer number two has a long ways to go.  So if you guys pray out there, make sure you direct those prayers to Carson being healthy this season.

Our defense looks impressive at times.  When it doesn't, it looks like the old Bengals defense, where opponents can move the ball 60 yards in less than a minute.  I attribute that to somewhat of a lackluster pass rush, and the inability of our safeties to read plays correctly.  I hope Zimmer can get these things fixed before Sept. 13.  We seem to have amazing talent at safety, and the way Geathers sacked Brady last night made me wanna think that Robert might end up with double digit sacks this year.

Offensively, I have a feeling that Bratkowski can't find the right rythm of past years.  I think he runs when he should pass, and passes when he should run.  They don't seem to have the right combination to FINISH the drives and put some fucking points on the board.  Once again, I hope he solves this before Sept. 13.

Cedric seems like the real thing, but he's not spectacular like some RB's out there in the leauge......Scott is a really exciting prospect, he should turn out to be one of the steals of the draft.....Leonard seems just ok, but he should help is in short yardage situations tremendously, even more if we have the right FB at the start of the season....sepaking of full backs, I would like to see Pressley more involved, he seems like a solid prospect......Caldwell has not been that involved but I still have high hopes for him, and Simpson made an incredible grab last night that might make the coaches think twice about the WR situation.....Cosby seems ok, although we haven't seen him that much......Freddie Brown is, like Pressley and Lucky, someone I would like to see more of because I think they have great potential.......our offensive seems ok, although I saw Collins struggle at the RT position....which makes me wanna give Smith his 40 million plus contract that he wants.....Cook looks like he can handle this year's load......Sims looks to me like a better starter than Tank, although our DT rotation is A ok by my standards.......Maululueleluleuga looks like a fucking beast.....Hodge looks better than the other back up LB's.......I'm nervous about Leon Hall but I'm in love with JJ, he's rock solid.....Trent looks like he might win the third CB spot if he keeps playing like yesterday......and last but not least, Ochocinco might go to the pro bowl this year....if Palmer stays healthy.

All in all, I think we might brake the 8 win mark this year.

Your thoughts.

I'd keep Lucky instead of James Johnson

would you rather have leonard or lucky?

lucky looked good last night, but he needs to get in a little earlier..

good question

I think I’d go with Lucky, I loved his college career.

Leonard hasn’t done much to impress me this preseason, but Lucky’s solid runs against a defense knowing it needs to put the Bengals 3 and out were an eye-opener. Hopefully he’ll get more carries in the preseason so we can see what we have there.

I know I’m sounding like a broken record, but why do people keep calling Benson “the real thing” when he averages less than 3 yards per carry and fumbles every game? Are our standards really that low? Watson’s been cut (again) so I’ll leave him out of it, but the other guys need some carries so we can find out who’s best suited to be the starter. To me it’s painfully obvious that Benson is not the guy.

agreed

Benson runs like a milk cow. Give him an open field with nobody in front of him and he’ll just stand there. I am excited about Scott, and can somebody tell me about the 45 yard run that Dorsey had? I see it in the box score, but I couldn’t find anything written about it.

This is our year!

As I said, he SEEMS like te real thing bit is not spectacular. What Mean is that he seems that he can be our #1 RB. I personally love Scott. I don’t know if he can carry the load at his size, then again I might be wrong. Either way he’s definately our #2 back. Benson is by no meausure an Adrian Peterson or a D Williams, but personally I think he has the right combo of speed and strength to be our guy. We’ll just have to wait and see.

re: Benson’s combo of strength and speed…

I hope you’re right. Just looking at the numbers over his entire pro career, he’s never shown he can translate speed and strength into production. Saying Cedric Benson is no DeAngelo Williams is like saying Joey Harrington is no Peyton Manning, it’s just a bit of an understatement.

Benson would be like a Carson Palmer

On the running back note....

How the fuck did we miss Javon Ringer in the 5th round? I mean Huber was nice but he would’ve been there in the 6th.

I was looking at him and a couple other guys when Huber was called. Duke Robinson I think his name is, the guard from Oklahoma. A couple other guys I don’t remember. Fell really far. I like the Huber pick, if they had good reason to think he wouldn’t be there later. The definitely looks great so far. Field position is a very important part of the game. The fact he was able to boot it.. 38 i think? when the Bengals were backed up to their own 3 or so in the first preseason game was impressive as well.

I agree.

Huber’s impact this year will be far more measurable than Ringer’s would have been. Leonard will also be better than Ringer this year.

Huber will result in something like 5 NET yards better per punt, which is massive over the course of the year measured in win value added on a yardage basis. Huber is a franchise punter.

I’m also biased, he’s one of my favorite players.

Yeah

Guys, nobody’s second guessing the Bengals picking Huber. I’m almost positive we could’ve gotten him in the sixth.

Leonard is going to be better than Ringer? Wow, what a statement. That would only happen because the Titans have a stellar #1 RB in front of Ringer. Even then Leonard won’t be better by a mile. I don’t think you guys have seen Ringer play this offseason. The guy has sooooome moves.

Just this year.

I saw Ringer walk all over my Northwestern Wildcats this year. I think Ringer would be better long term, but if the Bengals want to draft a RB, they can use a 1st or 2nd round pick and get a premier guy.

I don’t know if Huber is there in the sixth. That’s a fruitless/indeterminable debate.

I just don’t see Ringer having much of a role on the team as it is now – and we’ll have to see what Bernie Scott turns into. Ringer is buried in Tennessee behind 2 #1 RBs.

fifth round is usually the latest that a stud kicker/punter gets drafted. steelers drafted sepulveda in the fourth, packers took crosby in the fourth or fifth, and i’m pretty sure the raiders took lechler in the fourth. it’s not a safe assumption that huber would’ve been there in the sixth. but ringer would’ve been a nice pickup.

Forget Kenny, let’s pick up Selvin Young, or maybe “Air Bud”
