Report: Reggie Kelly left practice with a "serious Achilles injury"
One of the more interesting position battles during Training Camp was Tight End; Reggie Kelly being the incumbent starting Tight Ends, who splits time as an H-Back; Ben Utecht being that guy that could open up the passing game and Chase Coffman, the all-time receptions leader (247) for Tight Ends in college. The rookie was going to have the longest road, looking for playing time opportunities.
That might have just happened.
On Monday, Geoff Hobson writes that Kelly "left practice with what some were calling a serious Achilles injury. A torn Achilles would end the season for one of their best blockers." If Kelly's injury is serious enough to end his season, that easily opens the door for Daniel Coats, who could get work during goal-line and "big" formations, likely being the best Tight End blocker at this point.
Kelly will become a free agent after this year.

i asked John thornton about this, he said
“JohnThornton@jGoods13 Just went to bengals.com and saw it. Sucks. at his age would be career ending :( I had a sore one last year. scary”
"Ghiaciuc's play was a distraction"
Damn
Well he was our primary blocking TE. So either Coffman or Utecht need to step up in protection. Daniel Coats should make it now I would assume.
Just a thought
If Utecht and Coffman are better on 3rd downs, and we just need a TE to run block, can’t we use another O-Lineman like Collins.
we can for "for sure run downs"
But if the D sees collins out there, they will know we are running the ball

Wasn't LS Brad St. Louis listed as a TE for a while?
Wouldn’t he be okay to pencil in as a “blocking” TE?

Only if he drank some extra ensure that morning.
He played TE for us back in like 2002. Not sure he could still do it or not.

The only thing I would expect St Louis to be able to block
is our chances of making the playoffs. ba-zing!
Definitely sucks if thats it for the season/ career for Kelly. Loved watching him block along the line. You could have Collins in there as a TE and still pass though. He would probably just hang back in protection unless he has some quality hands we don’t know about.
It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.
Kelly
In all seriousness, I hope he turns out okay, because as Thorton said, at his age, it could end his career. He’s always been a great guy for the team.
i asked John Thornton if Coats could do the job, he said
“JohnThornton@jGoods13 no they don’t have another R Kelly. Gonna have to change things up. It will affect Andre Smith too”

Interesting observation on impacting Smith.

All sympathies to RK, but this might turn out in our favor. Not saying Utecht and Coffman are going to be all world, but you at least have to make the defense account for the TE in this offense, which was never a concern with Kelly. We couldn’t run with him in there and his leadership hasn’t won us many games or turned us into a disciplined team. I’m not panicking.
ruptured tendon
Walker reports it is a ruptured tendon
Not good news.
Thornton just tweeted this
JohnThorntonBengals fans, TE Reggie Kelly just texted me and said “Tell the fans thanks for their continual support and prayers.”

Let him grow
Let Chase Coffman develop into a dual blocking/receiving threat. From all that’s been said about him, he’s willing to do whatever’s nedded of him. I think he’ll be Jason Witten Lite in a few years
