broncos opening day starter

According to several reports, both Kyle Orton and Chris Simms might not be ready for the opening game in Cincinnati.

Star-divide

This could make opening day one hell of a party.  Here is an article

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_13237238

I was very optimistic about playing them after hearing about Brandon Marshall, this news makes it even better.

The Broncos have 2 quarterbacks competing for the final spot, one is a rookie and another is a 3rd year player from Furman who's never played a down in the NFL (regular season)

I think they're not strong at the QB position even if Orton or Sims was playing.

We should win that game with ease.

i think i’ve said this before, but i’ll be sorely disappointed if we don’t win that one by at least two touchdowns.

This is telling

The mere fact that we are depending on an opponent’s injuries to be confident in a win says a lot about how we really feel about the team. I don’t think this is going to be a sure win at all. We have a lot of new guys starting, a QB who may have trouble being mobile enough to elude tacklers or set up a screen, a DL who still can’t seem to penetrate even a mediocre Ram’s OL, a #2 WR who can’t seem to get open, a #3 TE starting, an O scheme that my grand daughter can predict, a RB who is averaging 3 yards and change, way way too many turnovers and an Oline that is still trying to keep D jerseys off of the QB.

We are probably going to get stronger as the season progresses, barring bad injury situations, as the team gels as a unit on both sides of the ball. Play this same game in week #6 and I feel good about it but this team is balanced on a razor’s edge and could as easily fall on the poor side as the rich side. We must remember that we are at a point where everything needs to go right for us to have a winning season and we are not off to a good start. The lack of humility some posters show is stunning considering where this team is coming from. I have no expectation of any “feasting” or winning any game with “ease”. I will be happy with any kind of win. Let us not get ahead of ourselves. Nothing is easy – nothing! I also have hopes that Rey is a “badass” but until he does it on game day in a game that counts against a team that matters I am going to take a cautious view. Anyone who knows me knows that I am an optimistic sort but common guys lets keep it real. We have a lot to prove before we can go into any – any – game confident we are going to win. Finish the first 6 games 3-3 or 4-2 and then we can let our breath out a little. Until then a little humility is in order. IMO we are still another good off season away from being where many seem to think we are now.

I do agree they have a long way to go

but I guess I just think our D is going to be worth watching this year. Sorry that my sense of optimism and my mention of feasting caused you to write another debbie downer post about how we are “getting ahead of ourselves”. Good thing you are around to keep our feet on the ground. Rey will do well this year, he hasnt done anything on game day because we arent that far yet, all indications say he is what we thought he was, a monster.
I guess your idea of humility is not getting hyped up and cheering for our team. I personally do not think my post was overwhelmingly cocky, I just think after watching them in pre season it should be a good first game for our D. This is a Bengals board right? Where else should I show my excitement?

No one's upset about your optimism..

I just think there’s a thin line between being optimistic and keeping it real…Unfortunately as Bengals fans, we’ve had to endure a lot of when “Kepping it Real, Goes Wrong.”

(I loved those skits on Chapelle Show)

Anyways…we’ve all been so friggen neutered by this team that it’s getting pretty tough to remain positive. Don’t get me wrong, I’m always hopeful…and I go to all the games…and you know good and well I’m always loitering around this site…so I’m obviously a fan.

And though I agree that this “is a Bengals site” and we should all root for the team, don’t ya think we all should at least try to keep it real a little bit?

i know people think i’m insane, but i’m in no way depending on the broncos injuries to feel confident about this win. i do have that confidence in the team this season. i’m also that confident the broncos are as bad this year as we were last year.

that’s pretty bad.

Let's call it winnable

I don’t think that our Cincy Bengals will have any guarantees this year, but after watching the Broncos/Bears game, I do like our chances. That said, if we fumble three times and can’t beat the blitz with solid running or short passing then we will have trouble. Denver’s got some solid corners and seemed to be improved on defense, but their first team offense looked pretty meager last game against Chicago.

This is our year!

by Carsonorbust on Sep 1, 2009 11:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Every game is winnable

Its just that the chances of winning go up and down depending on the team. haha. Lets be honest though, while the Bronco’s haven’t looked good (dysfunctional even), we’ve had some pretty piss poor moments as well. While I think the D has been good to very good… If we don’t get our turnovers and sack rate under control, we’re going to struggle to see .500 this year.

Now the good

Now that I have exercised caution let me discuss the positives. Devner has a 1st string QB who is injured and not that good to begin with, a #2 who is injured but expected back who couldn’t displace Orton, a disgruntled #1 WR, a very good RB who has some nicks and bruises annd a starting OL guy who probably won’t play. Their D is pretty good but we are probably a bit better overall if they are who I think they are.

Our DBs are seemingly better than theirs so as long as we don’t make too many assumptions they will probably be able to make them run the ball into the strengths of an improved Bengal’s DL. Stopping them on 3rd down via screens and short passes from an injured or 3rd string QB is key. I actually do think our DL backed up by Rivers, Rey and two reasonably strong safeties in Chinney and Roy should be able to hold them to 100 – 125 yds rushing and fewer if run attempts are under 50% which I do not expect.

I also expect Zimmer to spice up the pass rush with some here to fore unseen looks that he has touted with blitzes by Rey, Rivers and the safeties as I think the D line can hold it’s own against their guys one on one. I think the same is true of Brat. The players have backed up his claim to have some new and effective stuff that we have not seen yet. I, for some reason expect Coles to have a good day. Lots of small reasons I won’t bore you with.

So do I think we should win? Yea. But easy? Well I hope so because if we win it easy we may have a chance as that first game will go a long way toward us gelling and getting some pride and confidence. We are going to need it as the next 3 games will probably set the tenor for the rest of the season. If we don’t win it isn’t the end of the world but they really have to avoid a slow start and one loss could determine how far we go even if we are better than I think we are.

We have obvious advantages with Carson as QB, my only concern being that his tenuous mobility when healthy is going to be hampered further by an ouchy ankle. I think his lack of mobility can be an advantage as the Oline will at least know where he is without having to keep an eye on him as he won’t be out of the pocket. So as long as he gets rid of the ball quickly their decent but not stellar pass rush shouldn’t a big factor. I see this as a probability. Someone wil be open and if Carson has 4-5 seconds to throw the he should be able to control the ball and clock. I will be looking to see is they have improved their halftime adjustments. On O or D if it worked in the first half you still have to adjust in anticipation of their adjustments. We do not have a history of doing that very well.

Their D is pretty good? What did they do, import half the Steelers or Ravens? Their D was so atrocious last year it has nowhere to go but up, true, but they are also changing schemes without importing the players needed to run it. I have a hard time believing they will be any good at all, much less “pretty good”.

Their DT is going to be too small for a 3-4, their DEs are average at best (and couldn’t tackle to save their lives last year) and while they have to have four starting LBs on the team because somebody has to start, I’d bet that two of them would only start for maybe two or three teams in the entire league, and one of them would be the Raiders.

Now they do have a talented and experienced secondary, but without some help up front I have a hard time believing that on their own they would be able to truly “shut down” even the Lions offense from last year.

Then again, unless our offense actually finds a clean spark plug somewhere we may spend the entire game playing on only one or two cylinders. And if that happens then their D will at least look “pretty good”. But actually be “pretty good”? I have some strong doubts there.

Have you watched any of the broncos games so far?

We have brought back Dumervil, DJ williams, Champ, and Peterson. So, four defensive starters are returning. It’s a completely new defense.

Our D line knocked down Cutler 5 times in the first quarter. (one was a late hit). Dumervil was a split second away from having a safety.

Honestly, I think our defense is much improved and should cause some problems for teams.

The only real points that the bears got in the last preseason game was from Hester making a punt return to the 4. So that was basically a given touchdown. Then Cutler had a 98 yard drive for a TD. So, if it wasn’t for the special teams blunder, the defense played the whole first half giving up one touchdown. That, my friends, is much improved over last year.

Dumervil was giving Orlando Pace lots of problems, I can’t wait to see him come around the edge on “insert backup LT name here” during week one. Carson better watch his blind side. That’s all I gotta say.

Dumervil definitely was giving pace troubles, and in general the “D” did ok. But you have to admit, that even with Cutler, Chicago is not exactly an offensive juggernaut. I would call them “capable” on offense with Cutler there. Even if you give Chicago some props though, Denver’s D looked pretty bad on that last scoring drive by Cutler. They really got picked apart there.

The offense looked downright bad though. Orton seemed confused, the running game was nonexistent and the passing game had 1 play over ten yards in the first half. That’s not exactly what you call winning football.

This is our year!

by Carsonorbust on Sep 2, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not discounting Chicago's offense.

Trust me, I’ve seen my share of Cutler drives when he was in Denver. One thing that does not happen regularly, though, is Cutler not getting first downs. The Broncos forced him into a three and out on his first three drives. Impressive, especially for a defense that was the worst in the league in third down conversions allowed.

However, the bengals gave away their third down machine, Housh. I am from florence, ky, right across the river and watched every bengals game last year. Without housh, 3rd downs are going to be a lot different for cincy.

The offense looked average. I wouldn’t say bad. McD is from the patriots mold and I’m sure he isn’t showing everything in the offensive playbook. Honestly, do you think we would be running 70 percent passing plays with a backfield of hillis and moreno? Please. It’s the preseason. When Orton came off the field holding his bloody finger in the air, McD called it an “upper extremity injury”. You think that McD would show his whole playbook? Come on.

The broncos haven’t shown us anything. With a balanced attack, this offense will be a lot better. Not that statistics matter, but if they did, Orton has the highest completion percentage in the NFL. I love that he is progressing every game. He has 3 picks in the first game, 1 in the second and none in the third. He is improving. Given a new system, I would say that this is very encouraging for the broncos.

The running game was nonexistant because we used Darius walker and Buckhalter most of the game.

For those of you keeping score at home, walker is the number 5 rb on the roster and probably won’t make the team. Buckhalter is 4. Moreno, Hillis, Jordan are the top 3 at this point.

Let’s not even talk the run game. The broncos have focused on passing in the preseason because McD wants these QBs to get some experience.

Leave the broncos talk to the guys at mile high report, though.

Also, the 10 or 12 bronco penalties didn't help. You can't sustain drives that way.

So, with a little clean up and discipline, the offense will be a lot better than they showed against the bears.

If...

So what you are saying is that your team isn’t practicing their plays in a new offensive system in real game situations? Doesn’t bode well for week 1. Your points came across a lot like “If we had our starters in there” and “If our coach was calling all of the plays.” That’s a lot of “ifs.”

Then again, I say “If” a lot for the Bengals as well. We’ll just have to wait two weeks to see how it all turn out I guess. Good luck.

Who Dey!

What I'm saying is that we don't know what McD is going to do.

Given his history in New England, expect a poor looking preseason (last year, patriots 0-4) (this year, broncos 0-3). McD is playing the game to get certain looks out of his players, not to win. He isn’t gameplanning to win. Honestly, why would he do a bubble screen on 3 consecutive plays? That is certainly not because he is looking for yardage. He wanted to see his offensive players execute whatever play is called.

It’s preseason. Of course things are going to be vanilla. In practice, they have opened up the playbook. Orton and Simms have both been throwing bombs down the field in practice. Those plays are in the bronco playbook. They just haven’t shown it yet. That way, when week 1 comes around, SURPRISE!!!!!! The bengals will not have had any film on what the broncos are running.

See ya week 1.

3 yards and a pile of dust

Orlando Pace is a big old guy..

trying to block Dumervil.. a bowling ball of a man.. the commentating crew even mentioned it over and over again that Pace is getting to an age where its becoming hard for him to bend down that far to block those small guys. That is why the Broncos got such good pressure from Dumervil. Honestly it was probably one of the few positives you could take away from that game, it doesnt matter til regular season starts and it all matters, but no one thinks the Broncs are getting anywhere this year.

by 80%OFTHETIMEIMRIGHTEVERYTIME on Sep 2, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dumervil has always been short. But he has always gotten to the QB, too.

He has always been able to get to the QB, and with his new position at OLB, he will have favorable matchups with RBs every once in a while. He has been the best Dlineman on the broncos ever since he was drafted in 06.

Sorry, I always mute the games. Collinsworth annoys me. I am not a fan of the MSM for the most part. Pace is getting older, but that has nothing to do with anything. He didn’t have to “bend down” to try and block Doom. Doom is 5 foot 10 inches. If he was 3 foot tall, then Pace would have to bend down. That’s quite an exaggeration.

That’s why I don’t like the MSM. They are the reason nobody thinks the broncos are going anywhere. They don’t see the defense as improved, even though we drafted ayers, smith, fields and others, brought in davis, dawkins, goodman, hill, etc. The only thing we lost was cutler, and honestly, he lost us the last four games to kick us out of the playoffs. He laid over and died if the broncos were down one score. He threw red zone picks. At least with orton, he won’t throw as many picks (and wait right there, I know somebody is thinking about preseason number 1, but that was his first game in a new system, cut him some slack). We need a game manager and then we will win it with hillis, moreno, royal, gaffney, stokely, and marshall if he decides to play for us. The MSM only talks about how the sky is falling in denver and how McDaniels is on his way out before he coaches one regular season game.

Trust me, the sky is not falling in Denver.

With Marshall making headlines now..

there has been plenty of coverage about the Broncos.. every interview I have heard over the last 2-3 days puts them at 3-4 wins.. the sky isnt falling, its crumbling into dust. The defense was just plain sour last year, you kept all the same players but changed the scheme, and the personnel you have on D doesnt fit the scheme.
Orlando Pace is 6’7".. Dumervil is 5’11" .. thats a huge difference. All the people who are 6’4" and over will agree that its tough to get down low enough to block, especially an older lineman who cannot move like he used to.

by 80%OFTHETIMEIMRIGHTEVERYTIME on Sep 3, 2009 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

okay, let's look at the bronco defense

DE 98 R. McBean
NT 91 R. Fields
DE 90 K. Peterson
OLB 56 R. Ayers
ILB 55 D.J. Williams
ILB 54 A. Davis
OLB 92 E. Dumervil
LCB 24 C. Bailey
RCB 21 A. Goodman
SS 23 R. Hill
FS 20 B. Dawkins

Peterson, Williams, Dumervil and Bailey are the only returning starters from last year.
So, yeah I guess you are right. Changing 7 out of 11 defensive starters qualifies as “you kept all the same players but changed the scheme.” So, you’re wrong. Maybe you should listen to the MSM a little bit less and watch the actual game.

Bringing Bronco love from 1,112 miles away

by kentuckybronco on Sep 3, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In terms of defensive positions, 10 out of 11 are different than last year’s starters (Bailey being the only holdover).

I think most Broncos fans would blame a horrendous defensive scheme for much of our defensive woes last year. We have completely changed our scheme and brought in Mike Nolan, who may not have made a great HC but is an excellent DC. I don’t think we’ll struggle in run defense or pass rush as in past years; however, I think our LBs pass coverage is now a weakness. If this defensive unit is not significantly improved I’ll be very surprised.

I think all the drama in Denver has caused people to forget just how stacked the Broncos are on offense. At WR we have Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, Jabar Gaffney, Brandon Lloyd, Chad Jackson, and an impressive looking rook named Kenny McKinley (South Carolina HC Steve Spurrier said McKinley was the best WR he’s coached). That depth will be relevant as McD will run many 4-5 WR sets. We also have two very good and complementary TEs in Daniel Graham and Tony Scheffler. We are pretty solid at RB with Knoshon Moreno, Peyton Hillis (if you don’t know about this guy yet you will soon), Correll Buckhalter, and LaMont Jordan. Our offensive line is one of the best in football, only giving up 6.5 sacks last season, and according to Football Outsiders was the best run blocking offensive line in the NFL.

The major question mark is who will start at QB. I’d actually be very surprised if Orton doesn’t start. Some of you clearly don’t think too highly of Orton; however, I don’t think he was set up to be successful in Chicago (bad offensive line, poor scheme, and lack of talent around him) and will prove to be a much better QB than people think. He ran a very similar offense to McD’s at Purdue and was quite successful in it. Regardless of who is playing at QB…the Broncos are not in a position where they need the QB to be the hero and win the game for them. He’s just got to manage the game, limit mistakes, and get the ball to the playmakers.

What’s the point of my rant? I think people have bought into all the drama and negativity surronding the Broncos this offseason and are overlooking a team that may be considerably better than people think. Or maybe they won’t be. ;-)

I thought...

the Broncos were actually going to take Maulauga when they traded with Seattle in the second round and took Alphonso Smith instead. When the Broncos traded, I immediately thought they were going to take Rey-Rey since their linebackers suck. Fortunately for us, they took Alphonso, at that point I was 100% sure we were taking Maulauga.

He should be a monster this year.
