No surprise...
“The Indianapolis Colts’ all-universe quarterback Peyton Manning in 2007 cut a $2,300 check – as did his wife, Ashley — to Republican presidential candidate and former Sen. Fred Thompson. Manning also contributed $2,000 to President George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign.”

But for the educated thought...
this is no surprise – millionaires tend to support the Republican Party. Since the league depends on exemptions from anti-trust laws and other deregulation type policies (exclusive rights to DirecTV for Sunday Ticket even though it was illegal for baseball to do the same thing) to pad the owners’ bottom lines, it is not at all surprising that owners would support the Republican party more. I would expect the players to be a fairly representative sample of the U.S. population as a whole, however, making their political leanings more split (like the country).

Pork and Pigskin
I agree that its not surprising how owners want to donate to GOP candidates. Rich people should want to donate to the GOP. I’m sure that a surprisingly large amount of players donate GOP, too. Why not? They’re millionaires! They SHOULD be supporting the GOP. Its the people in the stands who support the GOP that I don’t understand. I don’t want to make this too political, but I don’t get it.
People who support the democrats cannot understand why anybody supports the republicans. (Or sometimes they think they can understand why “rich people” do, but they don’t really.) And people who support the republicans feel the exact same way about people who support democrats.
You know why that is? Because politics is basically a religion. Neither side will ever prove to the adherents of the other religion that they were really right all along. In part this is because NEITHER side is EVER completely right. And in part because no amount of proof will convince the “true believers” of the other side anyway. Add in a few other minor reasons and there frankly is no hope to ever get a resolution to this argument. Which is why I’m glad it seems to come up so rarely on these boards.
