Cincinnati Bengals Player Pick 'Em for Week 3

Hey y'all, been playing a fun game over on Canal Street Chronicles and since we don't seem to have anything like that here I decided we should.  If you're curious about the original idea check it out here.  Since I'm running this show I'll be making a few tweaks but the rules are still going to be pretty simple.

The basic idea is that you pick one player -- other than a QB, P, or PK -- that you think will score points for the Bengals in week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  So the easy "cop out" of Carson Palmer or Shane Graham is not allowed.  And since nobody wants Carson going down, all QBs including Jordan and JT are not allowed either, although if another player tosses a TD pass out of a trick play formation that will count.  Any form of scoring points by any other position counts, whether tossing a TD pass, catching one, running it in, returning an INT/FUM for a score, or a safety where they are given at least partial credit for it on the official NFL game log.  If Chad kicks a PAT again that also counts.

Points will be cumulative from week to week.  Unfortunately all you get for being in the lead after week 17 is bragging rights, but it should still be fun to play anyway.

Star-divide

Here's where it gets complicated.  You get rewarded for originality.  Your primary means of getting points is from picking a player that other participants did not pick.  For example, let's say there are 8 participants and 6 of them pick Benson and two pick Ocho.  We'll further assume that both players scored.  The two who picked Ocho would each get 6 points and the six who picked Benson would only get two points.

You also get rewarded for picking a defensive player because it's less likely they will actually score.  To make it even more worthwhile to pick a defensive player I'm going to make it a bit easier for them to get points than coldpizza does.  For us if the defensive player actually scores via a defensive play (if he's put in as an extra TE/FB/whatever like the Patriots used to do with Mike Vrabel and he runs in a TD / catches a TD pass he's considered an offensive score) he's worth 3x the normal rate.  If he recovers a turnover (either by catching the INT or recovering the fumble) and the Bengals either have possession at the of the play or another player on our team scores during the run-back, he's worth 2x the normal rate.  And if he causes a fumble but does not actually recover it (but another Bengal does) he's still worth the basic one point rate.

Clear as mud?  Here is a quick overview:

1) Pick one player.  (Make it easy on me, make him the title of your post.  Both first and last name please.)
2) An offensive score is worth one point per participant who did not pick your player.
3) A defensive player is worth 3/2/1 point per participant who did not pick your player based on if he 3) actually scored, 2) gained possession of the ball for the team, or 1) allowed the Bengals to gain possession by causing a fumble another player recovered.
4) Keep commentary to the bare minimum please.
5) Try to be original yet still pick somebody you think has a realistic chance to score or cause a turnover.
6) Only ONE (1) player entry per contestant, per week is allowed.
7) Deadline for player entries each week is THIRTY (30) minutes prior to kickoff.

Chris Henry

This really is my pick but it’s also to demonstrate how to play. Oh and please don’t use nicknames. Even when we all know who “slim” is. Just make it easy on me to figure this all out OK? Thanks.

Andre Caldwell

the guy is obviously involved, and you know that Pitt’s gonna focus on Benson/Henry/Cinco.

Also, still a little confused about the defensive scoring. Do we get points for forced fumbles? Can we get an example with a player (Say Pat Sims) who possibly forced a fumbe?

This is our year!

Sorry I realized afterwards that might not be clear. You score one time, and you get the maximum possible points for that player.

So lets say that Pat Sims forces a Steeler fumble on one play that another Bengal recovers, then later in the game recovers a Steeler fumble on another. You would get 2 points times the “uniqueness factor” because of the recovered fumble but nothing for the original forced fumble.

You also don’t have to specify what you hope to happen (although there’s no penalty if you are wrong, nor bonus if you are right, so long as they meet at least one of the scoring rules).

Leon Hall

It's still a good season if we go 2-14 and beat the Steelers twice.

In the future I won’t be offering a second try, but since this is the first try for everybody and you picked a player not on our roster want to make an alternate choice? If so I’ll count it as replacing this one.

I'm gonna go with J.J taking one to the house off of a rey Rey tipped balll aft

He puts a back breaking hit on ward that paralyzes him instantly

Fuck ward

I could be a hard hitting wr too if I took a cheap shot at every player that was not looking. How about he doesn’t look and I throw my 230 lb frame into his ass. Let’s see what’s broken on him after that. Cheap shot bitch is what he is.

Cedric Benson

Gonna be a low-scoring game and he’s due a touchdown.

Keith Rivers

Can he be declared the winner if he knocks w-hines out of the game? Actually, if he knocks ward out of the game, I’ll be too happy to care whether I win this or not.

Hmm, well we already do have a “Hines Ward Rule” in real life… and I’m really tempted to give us another… :) But sorry, the best I can give is honorable mention if this happens.

I’ll be particularly happy to see this guy on the field.

Chad Ochocinco

nobody has ever heard of the guy, but he’s good.

Quan Cosby

This guy is fast as a punt returner. Bengals should play him more so Ochocinco and Henry can catch a breather. Look for special team to score at least one on Sunday.

Cedric Benson

The key to beating Pittsburgh is ball control and time of possession. Benson 30 carries for a tough 107 yrds rushing (2 TDs), & 3 catches for 25yds. Catches out of the backfield will slow down the rush & allow the short passing game to be methodical. Bengals need 35 min+ of possession time & they will win by 10. 27-17.

WOW

Can anybody actually believe we won that thing? Has it sunk in yet or are you all still to busy cheering like maniacs and dancing in the streets?

Well anyway results from this will have to wait for just a bit. I’ll compile and post them either tomorrow night or Tuesday, and I’ll get next week’s thread up at the same time.

WAY TO GO BENGALS!

OK we had 21 participants, so the maximum points possible for “uniqueness” was 20.

Andre Caldwell, Cedric Benson, Jonathan Joseph (x3), and Brian Leonard scored points for those who picked them by the rules of the game. Diesel, please go on ahead and type out Jonathan Joseph for me next time. It’s reasonably obvious that’s who you meant but I’d prefer to be 100% sure.

1 – Deisel2405 – 60 pts (Joseph x3)
2 (tie) – ZJiff30 – 20 pts (Leonard)
2 (tie) – Carsonorbust – 20 pts (Caldwell)
3 (tie) – Vman in Germany – 19 pts. (Benson)
3 (tie) – CincyRed – 19 pts. (Benson)

Everybody else didn’t score points this week but we’ve all got another shot next week.
