Nominations for week two FedEx and Pepsi weekly awards are out; no Bengals

On Tuesday, the NFL released their nominations for FedEx Ground Player, FedEx Air Player and Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week. Neither Rey Maualuga (four tackles, a sack and two forced fumbles) or Carson Palmer (three touchdown) passes made it this week for sponsored fan votes; though it would be hard pressed to see Palmer nominated. The nominations this week are:

Star-divide

FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week

  • New Orleans’ DREW BREES completed 25 of 34 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns with one interception in the Saints' 48 - 22 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
  • Houston’s MATT SCHAUB passed for 357 yards and four touchdowns, completing 25 of 39 passes in the Texans' 34 - 31 win over the AFC South rival Tennessee Titans.
  • Arizona’s KURT WARNER completed 24 of 26 passes (NFL-record 92.3 completion percentage) for 243 yards and two touchdowns for a 131.2 passer rating in the Cardinals' 31 - 17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week

  • San Francisco’s FRANK GORE rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries in the 49ers' 23 - 10 win over the NFC West rival Seahawks.
  • Miami’s RONNIE BROWN rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries in the Dolphins' 27-23 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football.
  • Tennessee’s CHRIS JOHNSON rushed 16 times for 197 yards including two rushing touchdowns of 91 and 57 yards in the Titans' 34 - 31 loss to the Houston Texans.  Johnson finished the game with 284 yards from scrimmage which includes a 69-yard receiving touchdown.

Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week:

  • Chicago’s JOHNNY KNOX made six receptions for 70 yards including a 7-yard touchdown in the Bears' 17 -14 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

RE:

I can see and understand the people that scored touchdowns. But one could argue that Maualuga’s day was better than Cushing’s.

It's ridiculous the lack of press the Bengals have got after this win

They hate us

Actually...

Non of the main highlight reels of ESPN’s and NFL Network’s NFL highlight shows FEATURED the Bengals, they treated the game as if it was nothing. When in reality it was the biggest upset for the season so far. I don’t live in Cincinnati so I would know I they’d get press or not. Obviously in Cincy the press must be going wild. ACTUALLY

say it aint so

Bruce “the spruce” Johnson made it on the list for one INT.. Maualuga’s stats blow those away IMO.

Rey had a solid game, but not outstanding.

Don’t get mad at me. The press just isn’t on the same page. We’re still a “fluke” team with the Green Bay win at the moment. Oh, and Ronnie Brown didn’t help win the game like Benson did, so I don’t understand why he’s even considered. Whatever.

All that matters at the moment is this Sunday at 4pm. We win that game, we win nation wide respect.

that’s fine, but explain how brian cushing putting up ten total tackles is a more impressive stat than a sack and two forced fumbles? it’s not, which is the point.

you're all posers. i hated bratkowski before it was cool.

Its not. But you aren’t going to convince anybody who matters about it. Pity.

Rey didn't stand out in the game enough. However, ODOM did.

The NFL named Bengals right end Antwan Odom the Defensive Player of the Week Wednesday after he

tied a franchise record at Green Bay this past Sunday with five sacks in the Bengals’ first win ever at Lambeau Field. The Bengals, who have compiled individual sack records since 1976, had seen such a performance only once previously, when left end Eddie Edwards logged five sacks against Cleveland in the 1980 finale.

Also Wednesday Tampa Bay picked safety Corey Lynch off the Cincinnati practice squad and the Bengals replaced gun with rookie cornerback Rico Murrauy.

According to the Bengals’ Odom press release:

Odom produced 31 yards in losses with his five sacks of Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers. Two of his first three sacks helped push the Packers out of field-goal range, forcing punting situations, and midway through the fourth quarter, he pushed the Packers into a third-and-15 situation at their 28, with a punt the result of that drive.

Odom also recorded two sacks vs. Denver in Game 1, and his seven-sack total leads by three in the NFL sacks race. Odom and Edwards now share the Bengals record for most sacks over any two-game span, as Edwards had seven over the last two games of 1980.

Elias Sports Bureau reports this week that since 1982, when individual sacks became an official NFL statistic, no player has matched that total for the first two games of a season. The previous record for Games 1-2 of a season was 6.5, by Detroit DE William Gay in 1983 (Gay finished ’83 with 13.5).
