Post-game Open Thread: Bengals beat Steelers 23-20. Who Dey! Who Dey! Who dey think gonna beat dem Bengals?
What could one possible say right now? How did they pull this off? The Bengals, left for dead in the first quarter, nearly having lost the game in the first three possessions, score 14 points in the final quarter to win the football game 23-20. On the last drive of the game, the offense, largely ineffective, convert two fourth down conversions, the second perhaps being the second biggest play of the game. Palmer hit Brian Leonard out of the backfield. Leonard was hit and started falling a yard short of the first down. He laid his hand on the turf, and propelled himself over the first down marker. Palmer found Andre Caldwell after spiking the football for the game winning touchdown.
We'll talk more about the biggest win Bengals fans have seen in a very long time later in the week. For now. This post is our after game celebration.

Play of the game?
Aside the touchdown pass to Andre Caldwell, my play of the game is Brian Leonard’s reception on fourth-and-ten that converted the fourth down.
What’s your guy’s play of the game?
Who’s your player of the game?

Play of the game – Absolutely has to be Leonard’s second effort to get the first down.
Player of the game – Dare I say…Carson Palmer?

I just commented on that to my brother right before I logged on here.
That was some smash-mouth football boys!

Next best moment for me though was when Maualuga came back to the game after getting carted off the field. I turned blue from holding my breath so long.

Leonard's was the most dramatic
but JJ’s pick six was the most important single play

I'm with you
When he leapt to get the first down I changed my ways. They’re sucking me back in damnit.

play of the game
most definitely Joseph’s touchdown. Before that play, the Bengals were getting blown out. Enormous turn around after that play.
Hard to pick a player of the game—would be Joseph, but he got burned on some other plays. Probably Palmer for having no turnovers and organizing 2 excellent 4th qtr drives.

That was the best game of the past years… for a second there i forgot about 2005 season

Biggest win since 2005?
Hellz yea.
I know it’s only the third game of the season and we’re not even in first place. But this could set the season.

RE:
Yea. They didn’t give up did they. They fought it out. Another very uncharacteristic thing about the Bengals.

This is a marquee win
They didn’t give up, didn’t lay down. Teams in years past would have laid down after that first half.

haha that pops in my mind after every win. It really burns me though, the wife is a Broncos fan!
That said, you never know that coming so close against the Broncos and not finishing off that game gave every player a kick up the butt

Palmer silences critics-for now
Caldwell is clutch > better than Houshass

Bengals show they have the capacity to regenerate their testicles
The Bengals need to use some no huddle in the beginning and middle of the game

Brian Leonard
thank god we kept him. he’s been clutch for the bengals several times this season. he needs to have a home in cincy as long as he plays like this

If Brad St. Louis sees the field next week I will be shocked. Tryouts for a long snapper are a must.
by Adam Morgan on Sep 27, 2009 7:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i saw some solid youth football long snappers this afternoon
none snapped it over the punter or placekick holders head.
srsly, St Louis spit the bit. he’d be gone from any playoff caliber organization.

Finally, ESPN shows the Cincinnati highlight
They show none of Pittsburgh’s touchdowns, don’t mention the adversity. Show J Jo’s pick 6 and the last drive.
Talk about how great Leonard’s effort was.
Highlight lasts about 45 seconds.
They point out that the Bengals should be 3-0 if not for fluke in Denver.
Ced was 16/76/1
Now they’re getting into the culture, lauding the attitude after the week-1 shock.

I don't think the Bengals win this game if they won the Broncos game.
That loss taught them that they have to play 60 minutes and be desperate for everything regardless of the situation. Long snapper tryout have to start this week, though, that is big liability.

WOW
I give player of the game to Benson, while there were some great individual plays better than any he had, I think his scoring run and a 4.75 average for the day were big.
Play of the game has to be Leonard’s catch. JJ comes in a close second, only because Leonard kept them in the game in the last minute, and JJ kept them in the game in the game earlier in the second half.

Offensive line really played pretty well
Carson threw no picks and only got hit a few times
Penalties disappeared after the first quarter and, lo and behold, good things happened

A New Bengals
With -10 yards offense and down by 13 in the 1st, the Bengals of the past would have imploded and lost by 35 (see Cle vs. Bal). They stayed disiplined and kept plugging away. Very big step in the teams maturity.

Hey guys, I saw it and am going to weigh in later.
I’m at rehearsal right now and my director was kind enough to work around my watching the game on my iPhone. Absolutely amazing heart, grit and toughness. GREAT. WIN. Just wanted to let you all know I’m still with it up here in NE Ohio. ;)

When you break this game down can you break Carson’s numbers down by quarter? He was nearly perfect in the 4th quarter…

Biggest play:
Leonard’s clutch 4th down conversion
Palmer has been money in the 4th quarter.
The team has to have confidence going into the 4th quarter of any game.
Also, the defense stepped up and stopped the run at the end of the game. In the past, we would have had the ball run down our throats.
by R.F. Mehl on Sep 27, 2009 7:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Palmer has taken a lot of flak in the past regarding his lack of composure in 4th qtr comebacks and he has shown us this year through three games that he has matured by leaps and bounds in that department.
by Adam Morgan on Sep 27, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
also, like i said...
new rule: bengals are not allowed to look at the game clock. they have to pretend there’s 2 minutes left on every drive.

THANK YOU BENGALS!
Great game and you guys are definitely showing the league that you are not a team to sleep on. 2 big times wins back to back and sitting in 2nd place of the division. You helped out my Ravens very much today.
See you guys in 2 weeks.

Oh, I'm not.
I said all throughout the pre-season that you guys are not a team to mess with. I support Marvin Lewis all the way and do not have a problem with the Bengals at all like I do with the Browns and especially the Steelers.
You guys have some serious weapons and have made a huge statement in this league in these 3 short weeks. I look forward to battling your team for the rest of the season for first place.

WOOT!
Really an amazing win from way behind. Nail-biter for sure.
My favorite moment was after the winning TD, and the cameras show a closeup of Hines Ward. What? No smirk? Cheer up, sunshine!!

Let Carson call the plays.

Unbelievable !
Our chestnuts were roasting over an open fire and it looked as if we were going to be blown out…..then we put it all together and pull out the win. Are you kidding me ? Did that really happen ? So many big plays like Leonard’s extra effort and JJ’s pick six to choose from. Seeing Rey Rey hit the field after being carted off shows the character this team is developing. We are rough and tough, and I like it. Carson was THE MAN and carried us in the fourth quarter. This was a true “team win” and gentlemen and ladies, let us enjoy this and many more victories.
