Overenthusiastic... sorta
Hey Who Dey Fans,
While running through the hallways of my apartment complex with my shirt off this afternoon screaming "who dey baby, WHOOOOOOAAAAA!!!!" and chest-bumping my brother, I thought, "maybe we're being a bit too enthusiastic here."
This Sunday the Bengals played awful football through three. We were smoked up and down the field both on O and D. Palmer was missing throws and the D line was getting dominated by Willie Parker and Co. We got torched by some guy named Mike Wallace and some other guy named Hines Ward. We couldn't touch Big Ben for pretty much the entire game... and this is our "Super Bowl Team?" After a sensational pick return (which can really be attributed to Santonio Holmes) our long snapper for the second time this year sailed one over Kevin Hubers Head keep it at 20-9.
And make no mistake, its not just the "Behind the Steel Curtain" blog that is calling the Cincinnati Bengals mediocre. Writers everywhere will be chalking this one up to a Steelers loss, not a Bengals win. But here's the thing, it was a Bengals win... wasn't it?
The Bengals dominated the fourth quarter, totally turning the game around. Cedric Benson was amazing on those two touchdown drives. Palmer was nearly perfect. And who dominated the Steelers D line in the fourth? The Bengals O line. And while Pittsburgh is pissing and moaning about getting two field goals in the red zone... who was it that held them to two field goals? Oh yea, that was our D.
My point is this. While this team could easily be 3-0 and this point, we could also easily be 1-2, or even 0-3 after the near debacle at the end of the packers game. This team is good, but can't focus on Super Bowl aspirations after a week 3 win. We have to get better every week and for now, lets just concentrate on beating the Browns.
Who Dey? Dey da Bengals!!!

I haven't seen media calling the Bengals mediocre.
Most have us as contenders and a surprise team now recognizing that we’re a tipped ball from 3-0.

Fact is...
It’s about getting the W. Just because we were dominated for 3 quarters doesn’t mean we weren’t the better team. The fact that we got the W means that we WERE the better team. Football is made up of 4 quarters, not 3. Whoever plays better the ENTIRE game usually ends up winning the game in being the better team. So this indeed was a Bengals win, not a Steeler loss. Although we DO need to get better in so many areas.

i've only heard homer fans talking super bowl
and as we all know, they aren’t the type of people we should listen to.
after a win like that, you can’t be too enthusiastic. we all wanted that win so badly and we got it. the scoreboard said so and it’s in the books. we won. go crazy.
but i see the point you’re trying to make—let’s not get ahead of ourselves. so far, not many people are…we’re just really really happy that we won given the circumstances.

Happy for the win and also realistic we can and need to play better ball
I would say that is the overall sentiment for us fans, the media and the team.
But that’s a great place to be. Hungry. Wanting more. Having things to prove. It’s all good! They should be tearing Cleveland players arms and legs off and throwing them to the crowd next week.

just remember, if the tables were turned and we’d dominated for 3/4 of the game only to lose it in the 4th, the steelers fans would be telling you that’s how the game is, it takes all 60 minutes and you have to play the whole way if you want to win. so, they can take their sour grapes back behind the steel curtain and suck a big fat donkey dick.
you're all posers. i hated bratkowski before it was cool.

Who cares what Steelers blogs say about us?
We beat them fair and square. I don’t care what anybody says. We won… and it was such a heartbreaking loss for Steeler Nation. It was comical seeing the Steelers fans rushing out of PBS with their heads hung low and their terrible towels tucked between their butt cheeks. Bottom line is the better team won. We made plays when they mattered the most (3/3 in 4th down conversions… are you serious?!) We showed a lot of heart on Sunday and the national media is jumping on board. I haven’t heard anybody besides Steelers fans call our team “mediocore.” We beat 2 teams the past 2 weeks that were called playoff contenders. One of those teams are the defending world champs. We have plenty reason to be enthusiastic… even if the Steelers aren’t; playing like world champs.

Stay Focused
So very true that the Bengals can be 0-3 right now. It is encouraging to see this unit come together when it counts, but the way they are playing right now, any game can be lost.
The offense is very unpredictable. If it wasn’t for the defense (which should pressure the QB more often) the Bengals could be looking at zero wins on the chalkboard. Again, it is very very very encouraging that they finally win these crapshoots but they have yet to realize their full potential on offense (and defense).
I love how they have the “sleeper” mentality right now, because if yesterday was a blowout victory then I would be very nervous for this week’s game in Cleveland. Odds are that Derek Anderson gets the green light and if they let him recreate 2007 then this season will go down the tubes.
The Bengals must finish with at least 10 or 11 wins to make the playoffs (still early but hey gotta be hopeful). The AFC (let alone the AFC North) is as tough as it gets.
One game at a time, but what a season so far. Very excited.

here's an article to help light a fire...
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/don_banks/09/29/winning.records/1.html
Here’s a Don Banks article from Si that I’ll reference the kind of respect we’re getting. Its there, but its a wary kind of respect. I think people are still waiting to see what the Bengals do in the long run.
