Where's Bernard Scott?

Who Dey!!

There's no doubt that Cedric Benson is a workhorse, but can the Bengals continue to use him at this pace?

CEDRIC BENSON (So far this season)
66 ATTEMPTS
293 YARDS
4.4 YARDS PER CARRY

66 attempts in 3 games is a lot (emphasis added), but it's been effective. What concerns me is the beating Benson takes on the field. Everyone knows he runs hard, hits hard, but he also gets hit hard.

So I ask the question: What's the situation with Bernard Scott?

BERNARD SCOTT (So far this season)
3 ATTEMPTS
1 YARD
0.3 YARDS PER CARRY

Bernard Scott's a player. He has incredible talent and his running style should be the perfect compliment to the Bengals running game. Don't get me wrong, I love when Benson get's the ball, but I also want a healthy Benson.  Should the Bengals give Bernard Scott a bigger role?

The Bengals have played three close games. When the game is on the line you are going to go with experience.I’m not sure if Scott could have handled the blitz last Sunday. If the Bengals get some comfortable space in the score Sunday I would expect Scott to get some more playing time. But that’s a big if.The Browns could surprise Sunday.I hope I’m wrong.

No plays designed for him

Brilliant Bratt has absolutely no plays designed for him. He could be an explosive third down back and change of pace back, but in Bratt’s 5 play playbook, I don’t see Scott having much playing time this year.

+1

yup. its a waste of talent. something that bratt often achieves. anyone seen henry more than 1-2 plays a game this year? etc.

I have been plenty happy with Benson so far this year, he is doing a great job right now. I agree with redberkey here, although I didnt even think about it until I read their post, Carson does change the play on the go sometimes and having Scott out there to pick up the blitz would be risky. Great point! I am excited to see him actually get some touch out of the backfield as opposed to him getting the quick pass out in the flat where there is a linebacker waiting to crush him. Scott can move!

I agree that benson is the experience

but until scott sees it in a game, he’s never going to get that experience.

i also agree that he can’t keep up this pace for 16 games. if he does, we’ll be lucky we only signed him to a 2 year contract because he’ll be done after this year.

That is what these games (upcoming) are supposed to do!

We are supposed to take a commanding lead in games of lesser opponents. That way Scott can get game experience. We should have several of these games. Obviously Scott isn’t fully game ready, or is he (BRAT). We will never know until Brat decides to put him in more than 1 time a game!!!! Or Brat gets his head out of his ass and comes up with more plays that involves Scott.

benson is averaging 22 carries per game, which puts him on pace for 352 for the season. those aren’t numbers that break you down, unless you can’t handle being a starting running back.

as far as scott goes, i agree with the people who say it most likely has to do with the fact that the team has been in close games where a rookie running back could be a liability.

you're all posers. i hated bratkowski before it was cool.

I disagree

In the afc north, where big hits and tough defenses are at a premium, it’s a lot.

by brandone on Sep 29, 2009 7:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

those big hits and tough defenses account for 25% of the schedule (i’m not going to act like the browns are big hitters or tough). i’m sure he’ll be fine with an average workload; adrian peterson hasn’t had any problem staying healthy in a comparable division with a bigger workload, and he couldn’t even stay healthy for an entire college season.

Even when big hits and tough defenses aren’t around every corner it can be a lot. Just look at “The Burner”… he got ran into the dirt last year and so far he hasn’t shown anywhere near the degree of burn he had on average last year.

Of course, he also didn’t have much burn against most teams with a decent run defense last year either… but then again, Carolina and NE don’t exactly have good run defenses at the moment, so unless last year was a total fluke he should be having better numbers. Unless, of course, he was run into the ground last year. So far at least that looks like what happened.

And he got less carries last year than Benson’s current projected workload. Hmm…

376 is more than 352. 352 is about the average that rudi johnson had from 2004-2006, which is when he was our lead rusher. he broke down after that, but we got three good years out of him first; if we get three good years out of ced, i think we’ll all be happy.

But

Would you rather get 5 years out of him getting 250 carries to bernards 100

by brandone on Sep 29, 2009 8:55 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

not if he’s not productive at 250.

Hmm… for some reason I was remembering 326… should have double checked I guess… whoops.

What makes it even worse

Is how well Johnny knox is playing for the bears and they went to the same school.

by brandone on Sep 29, 2009 7:14 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

How does that make it worse?

I think if you put Scott on the field for more than 2 carries, if you let him get into a rhythm, get a feel for the game, he will start to break out in a major way.

Go read a book!

Not to change the subject

but I’ve been wondering the same thing about Chase Coffman. I really want to see this guy get in the mix and make some plays. Hopefully he can get in there against the Browns and develop his gametime blocking skills. After watching Coats drop a few in the first three games, he’s been in the back of my mind.

This is our year!

by Carsonorbust on Sep 30, 2009 12:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Scott will get time

As will Coffman, but there have not been too many “clock-eating” moments for the Bengals thus far in the first three games to make that happen.

This Sunday if we get up to a comfy lead of 14 or more, expect heavy doses of both players.

by UpStateMike on Sep 30, 2009 8:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well

First coffman has to be active for the game. They cant put him in if he’s not in the 45 man roster.

by brandone on Sep 30, 2009 8:21 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

D'OH!

Yeah, that’s going to hurt his playing time. Maybe they bring him in for some long snapping.

by UpStateMike on Sep 30, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i've wondered that too...

i think it was the right thing leaving him out of Sunday’s game.

i think we’ll see a lot more of him when we’re up 23-0 at the end of the first half this week. we’ve started the season with too many close games for me to feel comfortable having scott in. i’m sure brat feels the same way. scott will get touches, and he’ll be the burner we all thought he was.

by GrooveLeg on Sep 30, 2009 11:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You know who we are using effectively?

Leonard! Using him as a crushing, pass catching, receiving, tight end type of running back is perfect for his skills. I love having this guy on our team. Anyone else agree that he’s looked good in this “tight end, running back” kinda role?

Benson listed as Questionable

We will see B. Scott this Sunday. I’m almost tempted to start him in my fantasy league. Even if Benson is active, we aren’t gonna want to risk injuring him against the Browns.
