Open Thread: After Bengals 38-7 win over the Colts, did anyone separate themselves for a roster spot?
The question after the Bengals 38-7 preseason finale win over the Indianapolis Colts is, who separated themselves just enough to claim a roster spot on the team. Running back is the most intriguing. Do you keep Brian Leonard, who is the only running back to score rushing touchdowns during the entire preseason (2). Leonard rushed for 64 yards on nine carries against the Colts Thursday. The only guy to pick up more yards was DeDe Dorsey, who rushed for 68 yards. Does Bernard Scott enter the discussion or do you agree with me that he's a lock?
What about Frostee Rucker, who played one game heading into Thursday's game, finishing with a sack, forced fumble in which he recovered? Did Morgan Trent's five tackles and one forced fumble elevate him enough to challenge David Jones for the third cornerback. What about Geoffrey Pope? Did Pat Sims play well enough to get promoted as the team's starting defensive tackle opposite Domata Peko. I think at least it should be considered.
Did anyone close the gap, separating themselves from those that battled for spots on the roster tonight?

If the Bengals try to PS Scott and end up losing him (which they absolutely would)...
…I’ll go postal. Couldn’t be more of a lock as far as I’m concerned.
-Leonard vs. Dorsey is a hard call. In my opinion it’s got to be Leonard, as Scott brings everything to the table that you get with Dorsey more or less. Unfortunately, Dorsey played his butt off tonight and had that great special teams play, echoing one of the keeping points that Bratkowski mentioned on last night’s Hard Knocks.
-I don’t see how you get rid of Abdul Hodge. The guy is always around the ball and hits like a hammer.
-Speaking of hitting like a hammer…Chris Pressley must be part of this team somehow. Having such a dearth of talent at RB and FB is a great problem to have, but i sure am glad I don’t have to make those decisions. I don’t want to see Fui go by the wayside, but Pressley BENT UP A FACEMASK this past week. If I weren’t so tired I’d do the research and find out what kind of insane force has to be applied to bend a football facemask…I’d wager it’s a lot.
-As much as I like Corey Lynch for many reasons, I think Tom Nelson has handed Corey his walking papers. Quan Cosby probably is on his way out too, unfortunately. Most likely due to Nelson also.
-I don’t see how you don’t have Rey Maualuga and Pat Sims on the field at all times. I’m glad Tank is around, but Sims has just gone to a completely different level this year. The guy is an absolute monster. Sims and Maualuga need to be on the field for every down.
More to come in the days to follow, I’m sure.
Well I'll be darned.
That doesn’t happen often. Plethora is the word I must have been going for, then.

Leonard . . .
. . . brings to the team what Kenny Watson did when in his prime. May not be the best rusher, but he is serviceable. His real value, and what separates him from everyone else in the backfield, is his sound blocking in passing situations and his pass catching ability when leaking out of the backfield. The Boat Party fully endorses Leonard. My picks for the backfield would be Benson, Leonard, Scott, Dorsey, and Pressly (he’s a beast and in the AFC North, his brute power is sorely needed versus the Ravens’ and Steelers’ Ds). I know Fui was a draft pick, but he will probably make the PS and no other team seems to show interest in JJ the many times he has been waived in the past.

Roster spots should go to
Leonard over Dorsey — I just can’t get over the injury thing with Dorsey. In the last discussion the biggest thing was yards per. Leonard had a better average tonight plus he scored. That Leonard Leap on the 23 yard run was good!!
Tom Nelson seems to be much more motivated. Lynch at times looks like he could care less about being out there. I think they should keep Nelson over Lynch.
Just my opinion but like someone else said somewhere — At least we have these hard choices to make instead of wishing we had more players to look at like in years past.
Love the screen name. :)
And yes…if it’s going to be 3 running backs, Benson-Scott-Leonard.

Roster spots
I did some cramming and watched all four humorous and insightful episodes of HK today.
On top of what I read about the game tonight, I feel like Leonard, Pressley and Nelson all are keepers, but especially Leonard and Pressley should stay. I’m not sure how much we really saw, and I haven’t got to see any games being in Detroit, but Pressley looks like an extremely solid blocker, and I’ve always felt like Leonard is a pretty complete back. He filled in for Steven Jackson pretty admirably and behind a decent line can be at least a No. 2 back in my mind.
Good luck this season guys, as a Chiefs fan I don’t think we’ll be competing too much.

Can we just keep everybody?
This is ridiculous how everybody that was on the fence made big plays tonight. Dorsey blocked a punt and returned it for a TD, Leonard got a TD and had a monster night. How do you cut either of these guys?
I’m pumped for the year, and anxious to see who gets cut.
WHO DEY FELLAS!
This is our year!
all this game showed me is that...
We have a ton of depth. Dont be suprised to see the Bengals trade a few players. in player for player deals. Bengals could be looking for a TE, CB or an OL backup.
Some players we could trade…
1) Dede Dorsey
2) Brian Leonard
3) Frostee Rucker
4) Chris Harrington
Im not saying these guys are going to bring in great talent. but they all deserve to be on an NFL roster. And other teams may be able to use some of these guys. Hopefully thoses teams have a surplus at positions of weakness for the Bengals

I just can't wait to see what surprises Mike has in store for us.
I’ve never been so interested in cutdowns.
Kinda' like you can't wait to see if the axe murderer is behind the door??
I have some empathy for Mikey-boy, but I’m so done with his management of the franchise. I have this deep-seated certainty that he’ll do something to confound and infuriate all of us.

This is how I see it breaking down
The way I see it, clearly both Brian Leonard and Bernard Scott have more than staked their claim to a spot on the roster.

your right. there is a chance they do release him.
But he struggles to read defenses, and struggles to find open areas in zone defenses. Other than that hes a freakish athlete

Reality Check
As much as almost everyone in here wants Jeremi J to get cut, we need to start facing the facts. This administration isn’t going to cut him. The guy is not that bad if he keeps his work ethic where it should be. We’re lucky they wanna keep 2 fullbacks in the first place, or we would be saying bye to both rookie FB’s.
If you don't live like you wanna, you live like you shouldn't
