Predictions?
Allright, now that it is for real...
What is your prediction for week 1 against the Broncos and what is your prediction for the season record?
I'm an eternal optimist, but I am trying to temper my enthusiasm for 2009, but I forsee a victory next Sunday and 9-10 wins on the season.
One thing I find amusing...the whining from the fans who won't get to see the victory on the tube next Sunday. Maybe you shouldn't have given up your season tickets so hastily?

28-14 Bengals
Kyle Orton can’t fight the fact that he’s Kyle Orton – and an injured Kyle Orton at that.

Well, I'm pretty sure you will be very surprised.
The Denver D is much improved. The bengals will not score 28 points.

Also, the broncos don't live and die by the pass.
We have Moreno and Hillis, so the offense will probably more run-first than the Broncos have shown in the preseason. Most of the drives that were more run than pass ended up with a touchdown. Orton showed to be unsuccessful when McD called passes for most of the drive. I think that McD will switch up the playcalling a little bit and pound the rock.
I do feel that the Broncos offensive line can beat the Bengals defensive line.

Based on break out years for these player:
Roy Williams, monster safety against the run……
Rivers and Maulauga…..no need to expand on these guys, they’re amazing….
Players in our D line like Sims, Peko and newcomer Tank Johnson will play a huge role on stopping the run.
I know top 5 is a bold statement, but if we’re not top 5, we’ll be pretty darn close to it, maybe top 7.

We kept coach bobby turner. This means the zone running game is going to be successful, as always. We should be fine.

27 - 20 Broncos
We don’t know the status of Either Orton or Simms, So I wouldn’t be shocked to see Brandstater come in at some point. I do respect Palmer though, and I see 1 or 2 touchdowns out of him in the first half before the Bronco D finds a groove. I think the reason the Bengals are just about universally picked in this game is because its “known” that there is just no way on earth that the Bronco D could be that much better this year…. we shall see. On that note [and because I DO think they are better this year] I think the game revolves around who ends up with significant minutes at QB for Denver, and the Bengal’s D. Unless the Bengals D-line brings something that no one has seen yet, I don’t think they man-handle our O-line. I also think we all will learn a little about Orton and how much McDaniels holds back in his pre-season game-planning. I am a little concerned on that aspect of the game, I must admit. I am trying hard to put the rookie QB’s game 4 performance out of my mind, because I am sure McD already has… hasn’t he?? = )
Good luck to all you Bengal Fans, seems like these games always end up with a surprise performer one way or another, can’t wait to see how this one falls out.

Broncos fans keep talking about your improved D, but Cincy’s “D” has also had some huge upgrades this year….and No, McDaniels is not going to be some kind of Bronco Magician. Spoiler alert, there is a compartment at the bottom of the hat where the bunny fits in… and not even McDaniels could pull a win out of this hat.

I guess tannji didn’t see the Bengals D line dominate the Pats in preseason, and it wasn’t just the backups. It was ones on ones, twos on twos and threes on threes. But who I am kidding the Pats O line is nowhere near as good as Denver’s, right?
QB, significant edge for the Bengals
O line, edge to the Broncos
RBs, slight edge to the Broncos
WRs, Bengals hands down
D line, I might be biased, but Bengals
LBs, draw
Secondary, Broncos
Special teams, Bengals

Well, the Broncos allowed only 12 sacks all last season.
Not even the patriots can say that. Our Oline is significantly better than any team in the NFL.
Wow, WRs are better than the broncos? Royal, Marshall, Stokely, Jackson, and Gaffney will have a lot to say about that. I’ll give you the QB edge, but there is no way that OchoCinco and Coles are better than Royal, Marshall, Stokely, Jackson and Gaffney.

ocho and coles have 17 seasons of experience between them, with the numbers to back up any argument against them. royal had a good rookie year, but he and marshall have a ways to go to be considered the same caliber as ocho and coles. stokley is old and doesn’t have the same wallop he had in indianapolis, whereas caldwell is only in his second year with 4.3 speed, the ability to play all three receiver spots, and the toughness to be the permanent replacement for t.j. chris henry is the new cris carter, because all he does is catch touchdowns; i think his career average is one touchdown for every 6 receptions. compare that to chad jackson and jabar gaffney, who between them are lucky to be on a roster, based on production. i mean, slim’s numbers are kind of low because he spent a few years doing stupid stuff to get suspended all the time, but what’s their excuse?
by Raging Clue on Sep 7, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Marshall has the second most receptions of any receiver in the last two years. Royal was a few receptions short of a hundred reception season. Stokely is smarter than Caldwell and still had more receptions and first downs last year. Hmmmmm. Sure, speed kills, but the NFL is full of speed and what really wins games is execution and being able to read the defense. There is none better than stokley.
You really compared Chris Henry to Chris Carter? Wow. That guy is one parking ticket away from a year long suspension. Plus, the reason he has such a high TD to reception ratio is because he is so tall and gets red zone touches.
Their excuse is playing behind Moss and Welker and having Cassel throwing the ball last year. Cassel focused on Moss and welker and didn’t get them a lot of touches. In the red zone, especially, Cassel would focus on throwing the fade to moss and if that wasn’t there, OH WELL. He wasn’t developed enough as a quarterback to get to the third read, which was where Gaffney and Jackson played behind Moss and Welker.
Honestly, Henry is average, at best. He is not pro bowl caliber. The only pro bowl quality receiver the bengals have is OchoCinco and even that depends on if he is having a good year or not. He has been inconsistent the last few years. Coles has been average his whole career, but he is not the solution for the loss of TJ.
However, on the broncos side, we have two receivers that have actually been to the pro bowl, Marshall and Stokely. Royal is ready to go this year with the work he has put in with Rod Smith in the offseason.

marshall had the second most receptions in the last two years. but this year he has no desire to be a part of that team, and chad ochocinco can tell you that means to expect a huge dropoff in production. of course royal and stokely had good reception numbers, they had jay cutler throwing to them. give them ryan fitzpatrick and a makeshift offensive line and those two would be lucky to put up the numbers chad put up last year between them.
the comparison of henry to carter was based on the famous quote “all he does is catch touchdowns.” and don’t forget, cris carter was also once a parking ticket away from being out of the league based on his behavior, so the comparison remains apt. barely half of henry’s touchdowns came from within the red zone, so you’re wrong there as well. the main benefit of henry is that his size comes along with ridiculous speed. he just hasn’t been very smart in the past.
having cassel throwing the ball still trumps anything the bengals receivers had last year, because they were stuck with ryan “tipped at the line” fitzpatrick. being stuck behind moss and welker still isn’t an excuse if you’re in new england, where belichick always knows how to find opportunities for those who deserve them.
coles is as good or better than t.j. he can stretch the field, which t.j. can’t, and he’s still a solid possession receiver and consummate pro. t.j. whined more than chad ever has, it’s just most people who don’t pay close attention to the bengals wouldn’t know that. and coles is one of our two receivers that have been to the pro bowl as well, so there’s nothing special about that. in fact, chad has been to more than marshall and stokely combined. so, yeah, i’d still take our receivers easily.
by Raging Clue on Sep 7, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Marshall has shown remorse since his suspension. He even met with Rod Smith again. Plus, it is a contract year. Why would he not come out with a chip on his shoulder and play his heart out? He has to prove that he is worth paying that big check and then he will definitely get one.
Right, well, the stats aren’t too astounding for being so talented. If he played to his potential consistently, then he would have been to pro bowls and all that jazz by now.
You’re serious? Big Bill would definitely go with his big guns whenever possible. Why would you go anywhere else when you have 2 of the best receivers in the game? You don’t have to be a genius to figure out that you go with your best players as often as possible.
There is no way Coles is as good as TJ. Sure, Coles can (could) run, but he doesn’t have the moves TJ had. There’s a reason the jets dealt him. Reason one: They wanted BETTER weapons for Sanchez to use. The guy’s best years are behind him, I’m afraid. He is no longer even a fantasy number 2 WR.

Zander's Format
Broncos fan here. I liked your format so I’m going to reply:
QB, edge to the Bengals
O line, significant edge to the Broncos
RBs, edge to the Broncos
WRs, edge to the Broncos (Marshall, Royal, Stokley, Lloyd vs Ocho, Coles, Henry, Caldwell) (I think the Bengals are vulnerable to screens because Rey overreacts and your safeties are suspect in crossing patterns and mid and long-range pass attempts)
TE’s – You left these guys out, but significant edge to the Broncos
D line, Broncos
LBs, draw
Secondary, Broncos
Special teams, draw
I hate predictions so I won’t go there. But on balance and only on paper I favor the Broncos to win.

Right. The Dline ties up the O line and lets the linebackers run free.
So, since the Broncos are getting great pressure, that means the Dline is doing exactly what it needs to do.

DLine
firstPick – if you’re thinking of last year’s DLine, then I agree with you. But I am talking about this year’s DLine. It is completely different and they are doing exceptionally well. Your DLine has not changed much from last year and struggled in preseason. Finally I’m factoring in the Broncos’ coaches and scheme.
Geathers – Is he fully recovered from his knee injury?
Tank Johnson – pickup from Dallas – why did they let him go?
Peko – I like Peko
Odom – He has skills

Geathers _yes he has
Tank- is an inside pass rusher, he didnt fit Dalas 3-4 Defense

Sims
I did some checking on Sims. His name is not mentioned anywhere in the top 16 DT’s in the league.
Sims’ biggest asset is his versatility. He should fit in well with either a 3-4 or a 4-3 scheme. Against the run he has the strength to stand up blockers and fill the running lanes. He has exceptional leverage, which allows him a push that disrupts running games. He isn’t as skilled rushing the quarterback, but it’s certainly not a glaring weakness. His quickness helps him partially overcome the need to improve his footwork and he can collapse the pocket by taking advantage of a good burst. Scouts also like his size and motor.
Sims will need to improve his footwork. He also needs to improve at getting to the ball carrier and not being content to open opportunities for his linebackers. That should be a smooth transition with him adept at getting into running lanes to take on blockers. He isn’t fast — 4.98 seconds in 40-yard dash — but he has good quickness. He has all the physical tools scouts look for. With a solid combine showing, he’ll likely be taken in the second round. Scouting Report
You may have gotten a good player since he was ranked to go in the 2d round and you guys got him in the 3rd. Who knows? This is only his second season.

I don’t think McDaniels needs to nor do I think the fans expect him to pull a bunny out of the hat. I think this game goes to the team with the fewest mistakes or lapses. I think both teams are in similar positions as far as expectations. Both have upgrades they feel are better than the general consensus, and both have players coming in with question marks.
As far as the NE game, ya, I saw it… I pay attention ANYTIME someone outplays the Pats = ) I would have to soft-peddle a bit and say that the NE O-line is down a bit, and Denver’s, well I don’t think Denver has seen it’s true potential yet, and that is in spite of being one of the top five last season. I also think that conventional wisdom degrades our defense out of tradition more than through hard facts and analysis. We are MUCH improved against the run, and you had one of the better rushing units this preseason. Should be a fun game, and one both teams need.
This thread is for predictions… a Bronco prediction isn’t an attack on the Bengals, and I don’t take a Bengal prediction quite the same way as I would one saying I view McDaniels as a “magician”. He is a first year HC with a lot to prove, albeit one with an acceptably qualified resume.
Good luck!

Well, it IS offensive to me, but it is symptomatic of the MSM’s take on the Broncos. They tend to go with conventional wisdom over in depth analysis, as I alluded to earlier. That being said, it is indeed funny, but would be even funner calling him out on it after a 8-8 or better season = ) Also, I have no desire to relate with the Bengals, but it is a possibility. The Magician
You have to admit though, that people are treating McDaniel’s like he’s somehow has the ability to make the Broncos a 4-5 wins better than they were last year. As I recall, Denver had a pretty decent head coach last year by the name of Shanahan, and the loss of Cutler is a big downgrade for Denver at the most important position (at least offensively) in the game.
Also, I didn’t mean to “attack” the broncos, so I hope you didn’t take it that way. Just having some fun. You did come into the Cincy Jungle after all :-)
Good luck on your season!

4-5 wins better
Interesting that you mention that. I actually think that the Broncos will have that ability to win close games they didn’t last year. Cutler, who people seem to think has “the ability to make the Bears 4-5 games better” also lost us games because of his refusal or inability to check down, and his tendencies to lock eyes with BM, regardless of coverage. Shanahan’s time had come. He wasn’t adjusting on the fly or taking advantage of what teams gave us, whereas McDaniel’s game plan is predicated upon doing so. Correct some of those tendencies, defend the run, and there you are, with the opportunity to be that much better. But this years team doesn’t have last years schedule. As always, we will have to play the games before we prognosticate with any authority.
Lastly, no one really knows what Mcdaniels can or will accomplish. But he did take a team that was already pretty darn good, already regarded as one of the best ever, and pulled out an 18-1 season out of his hat. We are not the Patriots, but if he can take what he has and produce the nature of improvements that he did in NE… I’ll take it.
I don’t know who “Dey” is…. but your comments are appreciated = )
Good luck with the remaining 15 games of your season!

i predict 31-10 over the broncos. as i’ve said several times, their team this offseason reminds of me the bengals last year, and i don’t see them playing a solid game to open the season, whereas i think marvin’s going to have his guys fired up at least for the opener, a la the opener against baltimore (deceptive as it was) a couple years ago. how it goes beyond that is anybody’s guess, because this team has a history of inconsistency. if they play to their potential, there’s no reason they can’t be 13-3; that’d be my overly optimistic prediction. if they get the standard dose of bengals luck and play with their usual inconsistency, then 9-7 or 10-6 is more likely. worst case scenario, if carson palmer stays healthy, is 6-10. lose carson and 5-11 or worse.

u say they have such good experience and numbers but Ocho Stinko didnt do squat last year, Coles has has 1 1000 yard year in the past 5. Chris Henry has never been consistent and then u say a guy who has barely played.
Meanwhile Brandon Marshall is second in the past two years in the league in receptions, missed a game last year and still had 104 catches. Tops in fourth quarter catches in the nfl. and has posted two 1,200 yard years in a row. Eddie Royal set nfl all time rookie records last year and is even better. Stokley is a nicklebacks nightmare. Gaffney is also a solid reciever. If ocho cinco comes back we will cal him vs marshall a tie. But id take royal over coles, gaffney over henry, and stokley over caldwell.

Is hilarious. You can’t protect your QB, no matter how much better he might be. Wash. I doubt you can run the ball effectively.
You have a horrible secondary that will have to deal with swarms of Broncos receivers coming from everywhere.

Why is it that you have been mocked for 18 years now, but NOW is the time you guys get pissed off and start winning? Why wouldn’t the Bengals have won during one of those 18 years? Is now any different?
Your point makes zero sense.

his point is that “pissitude” has no bearing on the outcome of the game whatsoever. so, the broncos being “pissed” won’t have any bearing on how well they play in the first game.

I thought he meant that the bengals being pissed off would help them out. I wasn’t reading above that where he said the broncos would be pissed and play better.

Well, Royal beat Deangelo Hall like a drum last year.
Oh wait, Marshall wasn’t even there for that game. Royal was the number one and had 9 catches and 146 yards and a TD against Pro Bowler Deangelo Hall and Pro Bowler Nnamdi Asamugha. hmmmm.
It’s gonna be deadly with Royal Marshall Stokley and Gaffney. Even Hillis and Moreno could be receiving threats out of the backfield. Oh, and watch for Tony Scheffler too.
You guys are gonna have to be about 5 deep with the secondary because our receivers, TEs and RBs can be anywhere and all of them can take it to the house. Except hillis, he’ll just bust down the house, instead.
How many pro bowlers are in your secondary?

wait wait wait
D Hall, really? Where has he been since 06’, but I digress.. I suppose our “horrible” secondary isnt on SC every night during the season, but let me put this is perspective for you…
Lets just look at tackles and INTs with our CB’s first:
Leon Hall: 2 seasons
143 tackles, 8 INT’s
Johnathan Joseph: 2.5 seasons
161 tackles, 5 INT’s
David Jones: 2 seasons (21 G, 7 GS)
45 tackles, 0 INTs
Broncos CBs:
-It took over 4 seasons for Andre Goodman to get that many tackles, and Goodman has now played for 7 seasons and only has 12 INTs, last years 5 INT’s saved him there.. he is 31.
-Bell played in 9 games last year and started 5 recording 34 tackles and 0 INTs.. hes now in his 2nd year.. lets move on.
-Jack WIlliams played in 14 games last year, 13 tackles.. 0 INTs.. he is now in his 2nd year.
-Ok, here is the only guy saving your CB’s.. Champ “old man” Bailey.. now entering his 11th season at 31, is the only guy worth talking about on your corner. For your sake I hope he keeps healthy (see last year) otherwise youre in for a long season of no CB’s..
Who wins the CB battle.. we do. Lets talk about safeties so you can throw what I expect back at me, “we have Bailey and Dawkins”…
Chris Crocker: 7 seasons
321 tackles, 8 INTs, 7.5 sacks
Chinedum Ndukwe: 2 seasons
108 tackles, 4 INT’s, 5 sacks
Roy Williams: 7 seasons
506 tackles, 19 INTs, 6.5 sacks
Broncos Safeties:
Brian Dawkins: 13 seasons
535 tackles, 34 INTs, 21 sacks
Josh Barrett: 1 season
22 tackles, 1 INT, 0 sacks
David Bruton:
Rookie..
Darcel McBath:
Rookie..
Renaldo Hill: 8 seasons
474 tackles, 15 INTs, 4.5 sacks
Safety Battle: Once again, I think we win only because if you do not have Dawkins, you have nobody back there to stop anything, history proves that.
So, besides the whole “we have Dawkins and Bailey” argument, which you are sure to throw back at me.. you have two big time names and nothing else but rookie inexperience. Good try thou..

Again, BELL WHO?????
Again, it took your CB’s 2 or more seasons to match Andre Goodman’s 2008 season. And all those tackles mean that either the RB’s escaped the front seven or your boy didn’t have great pass coverage and had to make the tackle. So, having 108 tackles for your safety in 2 seasons is scary.
Not even John Lynch had that many tackles in 2 seasons with the Broncos and he was the 8th man in the box on most plays.
Champ was thrown to a total of 0 times in the first four games. He was thrown to a total of 10 times on the season. QBs are still scared of the “old man”?
Let’s just make it simple. We have a shut down corner in Champ Bailey. He gets hurt going into the box to help out the front seven. He won’t have to do that as much. So, he goes back to shutting down the entire left side of the field. Dawkins further shuts down that half and Ochocinco is out of the game. So, now we all know which side of the field Carson has to throw to. Hmmm, a zone blitz dropping doom into coverage takes away the underneath to coles or henry. So, the passing game is done. If it’s a run, Doom and the secondary simply makes the read and come into the box and shut that down. It’s not a difficult gameplan.
I really don’t think that Goodman will have problems taking your number 2 receiver.
The CB you missed in your broncos assessment was Alphonso Smith. The guy is a rookie, but he set an ACC record with 21 picks at Wake Forest. So, he can cover the slot with the nickel defense. In a 3 WR set, the Broncos can’t be beat. If you spread it out to a 4 or 5, that might make a difference, but most teams don’t have 4 or 5 quality receivers to take advantage of that.
Trust me, our secondary is not going to be a problem.

…but a train wreck at S. Roy Williams is exactly the type of player that the omeba system isolates and destroys. You wanna play a LB at S— then lets put Roy in space against, say, Brandon Lloyd— our 4th WR. Then Rey Rey and Kieth better be able to run with and cover Hillis or Scheffler or McKinley.

Just like the Bengals will have a hard time covering Stokley and Gaffney. The Broncos will struggle to cover Henry and Caldwell. Try and put 5"9’ alphonso smith on 6"4’ Chris Henry. Thats not a good match up. And where is Marshall in this Equation? he’s the biggest wildcard. Is he even inserted into the playbook yet? If hes in the game and the #1 Wideout, then fine, he’s the best on the field. And i love Eddie Royal, if Denver’s Offense can reach its potential then Royal should catch 100 balls. But Stokley hasnt done anything, and is just getting older. And isnt Gaffney hurt? Chad Ocho johnson is back. I’m sure of it. Add Coles and Caldwell. And we have the deepest WR corps in the league. On defense, is Champ… well champ? The Bengals have one of the best tandem at CB’s in the league. If the Bengals pass rush comes through, watch what these guys can do.
Where are we going to get a pass rush? Where are the Broncos getting their rush? Dumerville and? Sure Doom is a great pass rusher. But he gets knocked around in the run game. I bet Doom will get a sack because Whitworth is so tall. But the Bengals have looked good with their blitzes. Maualuga and Rivers have been all over the place. While Michael Johnson has looked like a freak. But Ryan Clady should hold down the left side. He is the Best pass protecting LT in the league. And Daniel Graham will pick up the blitzes.
When it comes to the run game. Its a push based on matchups. Denver has the better rushing attack. but their rush defense was so bad last season, and they really didnt do too much to improve it. Kenny Peterson has looked good. But im not sold on Ron Fields. And the Bengals D was good against the run last season, and should get better with out additions and growth of young players.
Then theres the QB. Its not a question, and it shouldnt be discussed.
One of my best friends in a lifelong Broncos fan.

Who said Alphonso would be guarding Chris Henry?
Marshall is just a talent. Honestly, nobody really knows where he is in the playbook, but Royal is the number one right now.
Yes Gaffney has been injured but he should be ready to go.
Pass rush will come from Doom and the D line. The Broncos have gotten very good pressure from the D line throughout the preseason. The pressure will certainly come from Doom, but that isn’t the only place.
Good luck against our O line. 12 sacks for all of last year and we didn’t get rid of any of the five starters. Enough said.
We didn’t do anything to improve it? How about changing 5 of the front 7? The broncos have played very well against the run in this preseason.
QB, we still aren’t sure who we are starting. It could be Orton, Simms or Brandstater. I don’t really know at this point. That could prove advantageous for us. Orton, you would need to prepare for the underneath stuff, Simms is good at the intermediate level and Brandstater can launch from anywhere. So, the Bengals will need to prepare for all of the broncos playbook in order to account for all of these.
I’m thinking the Broncos win 20-13 and i’m sticking to it.

If he has Champ’s praise, he has mine. Plus, in Miami, he had his 5 picks last season against number 1 WRs. In Denver, he will have to go against the number 2 because Champ is taking the number 1 down. So, basically, we have 2 number 1 CBs along with Dawkins who is basically a pro bowler every year and potentially a hall of famer. Are you Chris Henry's girlfriend or something?
I was hoping it wouldn’t have to come to this, but I’m gonna have to go to the stats with you because you clearly don’t understand how average Chris Henry is.
In the last two seasons, he has 4 touchdowns …….. total. He played 20 games in those two seasons. That is a touchdown every FIVE games.
He hasn’t played a full season in ……….. never. The most games he played in a season was 14 in 2005.
Last year, he had 19 receptions in 12 games. So, obviously he is getting open a lot. He must be open on every play……….
Also, you say he is a deep threat. His longest reception last year ………….. 22 yards. WOW, that’s a deep one. Guess what? Our RB Peyton Hillis had a 47 yard reception last year in his rookie season. That’s twice as long as Henry’s longest pass from 2008.
Sure, he has 19 TDs since 2005, but guess what? He has only had 107 receptions since 2005, as well. Brandon Marshall had 104 LAST YEAR.
Henry is not a great WR. Please, stop praising him. You sound foolish.
Bringing Bronco love from 1,112 miles away

you sound foolish to even bring any stats up from last season
You cant count any offensive stats from the bengals 08 season. Our longest pass might have been 22 yards. No joke. It a different team with Palmer.
You can spin stats any way you want to.
But in 47 career games, Henry has caught 107 passes for 1590 yards and 19 TDs.
With Carson as his QB, its 35 Games 88 rec 1370 yrds 17 TDs.
Hes our #3. Show me those same numbers for Stokley and Gaffney. They have both only ever been scheme players. I could catch 40 balls in the Pats offense. And Stokley did it with the Colts. The only reason Stokley caught 40 balls last year was because Denver threw the ball 80% of the time because all of their RBs got hurt. Try a balanced offense and see what he does.
"Ghiaciuc's play was a distraction"
by firstPick on Sep 9, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Um, they did have a balanced offense.
The broncos were still the 14th best rushing attack even after all of our running backs went down.
Stokely was basically a number 4 in indy behind Dallas Clark, Harrison, and Wayne. At best a 3a or 3b with Clark. Peyton was a master at ball distribution. Everyone got the ball pretty evenly in Indy. The TEs and RBs got balls too. It was whoever got open.
In NE it’s a different story. Cassel is not Peyton Manning. He didn’t make lots of reads. Basically just throw it up to Moss or hit Welker short across the middle.
Right, 15 of those touchdowns came in 2005 and 2006. What has he been doing in the last two years? This is a “what have you done for me lately?” league. Judging from that standard, Henry has some serious work to do.
In Denver, Stokley and Gaffney aren’t going to be used for the big numbers. They are for getting third down conversions. That’s why you haven’t seen Stokely put up huge yards for Denver the last few season. He moves the chains. Whoopty dooo. On game day, moving the sticks is what matters. There is none better than Stokely….okay, maybe Welker. Or TJ, but you got rid of him.

Running Game
You’re absolutely right that last year’s stats don’t count for much in analyzing this year’s Broncos. It is interesting, however, that you brought up the running game. Oddly enough and despite public perception, the running game did pretty well and ranked 14th in the league. Surprised me too given all the aerials last year between the 20’s. The team was 2d in the league in passing yardage. BUT, and here’s the real big butt, we were 16th in points scored. Lots of yards and not much to show for it. That was what Jay Cutler and the OC Jeremy Bates did for us.
by Endzone on Sep 9, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
and the whole sack thing
Let me tell you a little story… in 2007 the Bengals had a QB named Carson Palmer, and an offensive line that only allowed 17 sacks all season. Now comes the 2008 season. Palmer gets hurt, and the offensive line gets Ryan Fitzpatrick sacked 49 times. thats wierd.
What im trying to say is, sacks have as much to do with the QB as it does the offensive line. Cutler has a quck release and is great at throwing outside of the pocket. So he can get away from sacks, and opposing defenses are afraid to blitz a good QB. Denver has to show they can protect Orton, and Orton has to show he can make good decisions when the rush is on.
"Ghiaciuc's play was a distraction"
by firstPick on Sep 8, 2009 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You probably didn't return all 5 starters, either. Offensive line is about unity.
Orton mentioned in his interview after the first preseason game (where he threw 3 picks) that he has to get used to how much time he has in the pocket in Denver. He said that he had to get rid of it after a 3 step drop in Chicago but now he has time to take 3 or even four reads in a 5 step drop. So, he finds himself rushing himself and forcing things when he doesn’t have to.
It’s interesting that he has decreased his interceptions every game in the preseason. 3 to 1 to 0. I like the progress. He’s getting more comfortable with the system and the pocket protection.

Okay, so Reid was behind Cato June in Indy. In this 3-4 system, he is doing really well. The indy 4-3 wasn’t where he needed to be. Woodyard proved to be very valuable to the Broncos last year. He is only in his second year and he can flat out fly to the ball.
Mario Haggan, I was excited about. Seeing him in Pittsburgh a few years ago he showed lots of potential with Joey Porter in the 3-4. I think that he should be fine with DJ in there with him.
Andra Davis hasn’t been good at all with the broncos, I’ll give you that. He is really showing his age.
DJ, don’t even worry about it. He has changed positions 3 times in 2 years. He has been moved more than any player on this team. They wanted him at MLB after Wilson left, then they moved him to strong side line backer, then they moved him back to the middle, then they changed to a 3-4. He is versatile and will be fine. He has played everywhere, anyways.

“Okay, so Reid was behind Cato June in Indy”
umm try again he played d tackle, get your facts right. He is only 27. and last year as a backup he still had 30 tackles and 2 sacks.
and Andra Davis is hardly ever hurt, hasnt missed a game in the past two years.
you’re linebackers are so overrated as well. Dhani Jones is a solid leader but not good. Keith Rivers. All i know is that the guy got pretty much knocked out by a WR. and maualuga needs a lot of discpline before he starts becoming a good backer. He over runs so many plays, and he may miss a few games this year with broken ankles, he would miss “quick” backs in college. Boy he is in for trouble his first year or two.
i cant believe bengals fans think they will go 8-8. They have one of the worst o lines in the league, mediocre backs AT BEST. a qb who hasnt played in a while and no goo d tight ends. Their safeties will get beaten like a drum this year. Their backers arent very good in coverage. Yes they have two promising corners, but who after that.
no solid pass rushers, pretty solid at run stopping but cant get enough pressure on the qb. After reviewing the schedule im saying 6-10.

I sort of hope that Denver’s D coordinators don’t think that Henry is good either. That should help us out a lot.
Also, if we are going by stats solely, then KnoMo is a terrible rb, since he has never recorded a yard in the NFL =). (Yes, I know he’s a rookie, please note the sarcasm).
Then again, maybe we should just agree that context matters, and that stats don’t tell the whole story (only part of it).
Once again, good luck Broncos Fans (just not this Sunday)!
This is our year!

Okay, but Henry has been given years and years to prove himself.
Knowshon is just getting started.
Henry has proven that he can’t be counted on throughout the season.

my point was just that context and circumstance make a big difference. “Proven” is something that neither KnoMo, or Henry are. They are both big talent, huge upside sorts of players. I’ll leave it at that.

ESPN scouts inc
Denver at Cincinnati
When: 1:00 PM ET
Watch: CBS
More scouting reports: Week 1
Scouts Inc. Position Advantage
QB-Cin RB-Den WR-Cin OL-Den DL-Cin LB-Den DB-Den ST-Cin Coach -Cin
After breaking down film of both teams, Scouts Inc. offers 10 things to watch for in this week’s Bengals-Broncos matchup.
1. Denver needs to control the clock as well as the line of scrimmage. Denver is not apt to be a quick strike team this year and will need to pound the ball and sustain long scoring drives in order to be successful. Head coach Josh McDaniels knows that the Bengals can strike quick and will want to keep the ball out of QB Carson Palmer’s hands.
2. Expect the Broncos to run a lot of off-tackle plays: Denver has a good stable of powerful ball carriers with Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan toting the ball and can give the defense a change of pace ball carrier in rookie Knowshon Moreno. They will want to attack the Bengals on the perimeter where they can wear down the smaller defensive ends and outside linebackers.
3. Denver will look to prevent the big play: Denver lacks the big play defenders that can pressure the pocket on a consistent basis and will need to provide quality help over the top for their cornerbacks. They may give up their share of short passes but will look to keep at least a couple defenders back deep to prevent Cincinnati’s speedy receivers from turning a short pass into a long gain.
4. Look for the Broncos to use a lot of trickery up front: Since the Broncos are apt to struggle when it comes to bringing a lot of heat with their base package, expect them to use a lot of twists and stunts to try and confuse the offensive line for the Bengals. This also allows Denver to blitz their linebackers from different angles which can create mismatches as Cincinnati tries to match up against speed.
5. Look for Denver to flood zones with their multiple receiver sets: Denver will run out of a trips set for most of the game, employing a single back with no lead blocker. But when they try to throw the ball, they will generally flood areas of the field at different levels in order to force the secondary to pick who they want to focus on.
6. Cincinnati will try to get Chad Ochocinco involved early: He is their best threat both for the deep ball as well as underneath routes. If he gets on a roll from the start, he can be very difficult to control. Cincinnati has a relatively pedestrian ground game and will need to move the ball through the air if they want to move the chains on a consistent basis.
7. Expect the Bengals to take some shots downfield: Head coach Marvin Lewis and offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski want to score early and force Denver into a catch-up game and the best way to do that is to strike with a long ball, or two, looking to both Ochocinco and Chris Henry who both possess the speed to take it all the way once they can get behind the secondary.
8. Cincinnati needs to create turnovers: The Bengals have struggled to prevent long drives by their opponents and will need to find ways to stop the bleeding. One of the best ways to stop a drive is to create a turnover. The secondary will play aggressive coverage and for tacklers to try and strip the ball from the ball carriers in this game.
9. Look for Cincinnati to try and take away Denver’s ground game: With all of the changes that have taken place in Denver, the Bengals are going to try and force them to throw the ball in order to create turnovers in the form of interceptions. The Broncos had six interceptions in the preseason, second most in the AFC, and starting QB Kyle Orton has struggled getting used to his receivers and the new system.
10. Matchup to watch: Denver DE Elvis Dumervil vs. Cincinnati LOT Andrew Whitworth: Dumervil led the Broncos in sacks with five last year and this year he will be coming from a more natural position, outside linebacker. This allows defensive coordinator Mike Nolan to move Dumervil around and send him from different angles to make it more difficult to find him. Whitworth needs to contain Dumervil and limit his opportunities to get to Palmer.
Prediction
Denver 20
Cincinnati 21

Stating the Obvious
Obvious statements like Cincinnati needs to create turnovers. Please!
Regardless, not a terrible template from ESPN. I admit I liked their matchup to watch.

I'm confident because...
The team we are playing against pads their stats against Raiders and Chiefs 4 times every year.
The best team in their division wasn’t the chronically underachieving/overvalued Chargers. (that’s 6 games…)
This year we don’t have to play the 1×2,2×2, 3, 4, 5, 7, & 11 (for a total of 9 games) ranked Defenses this year, instead we get to play the Broncos 29th ranked D!
Our QB who led us to 3 straight years of top 12 offense is coming back.
We improved on our 12th ranked D significantly this offseason
I’d be worried if…
One of the best QBs in the league was traded to for one of the most mediocre
One of the best coaches of all time was canned for somebody unproven
my defense basically lost all our games for us last year
One of the most talented recievers in the game is on my team… but doesn’t want to play for us (granted a problem for bengals last year)
Last year my team padded their stats against defenses ranked 31×2, 27×2, 26, 25×2, 24, 23 (total of 9 games…)
Sorry I’m not buying the Broncos this year. We’re two teams going in different directions.
Bengals 27-13
by The Dealio on Sep 9, 2009 1:38 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The defense was bad, but almost all of those players are gone.
Plus there is an entirely new defensive scheme.
Cutler padded his stats between the 20s. The Broncos were 2nd in yards, but 16th in scoring. Lots and lots of interceptions in the redzone.
Shanahan has had a .500 record since 2006. He has hardly been “one of the best coaches of all time” since Elway left.
Really, our teams are going in different directions? You don’t seem to have a grasp of the direction the Broncos are taking. 3/4 of the team is different this year.

You're going to miss Cutler
Every Bronco fan that says differently is lying. lol. I respect the team pride though
by The Dealio on Sep 9, 2009 1:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm Lying
Because I don’t miss Cutler? Well, I don’t. Respectfully Dealio MHR has been going over the whole Cutler situation in excruciating detail. You will find the mainstream media, who always seem to focus in on QB’s star power (e.g Carson Palmer’s Bengals, not the Bengals), miss the concept of TEAM. Another oversight is that they make it a trade of Orton for Cutler. Again not true. We gained TWO first round picks and a 3rd PLUS Orton.

Great banter here
I’ll add my two cents:
Broncos 31 – Bengals 17
Moreno runs for over 100 yards, Hillis over 75 with a couple TDs. Our defense has a field day on Palmer much to everyone’s surprise. Palmer and Ocho team up for a couple timely scores, but it isn’t enough.
Man, I love being 0 – 0. :)
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Lets face it.
This “my team is better than your team” talk is just that; a bunch of talk. Me, I don’t know before the game if My X is going to knock the crap out of your O or vice versa, but on the whole it looks like these to clubs are fairly evenly matched. Each has strengths that match up well with the others weakness. Should be pretty close. 21-20 sounds about right. Since I’m a Bronco fan, I hope it’ll be them but realize it could go the other way. We’ll find out soon enough.
Neither team is getting a fair look from most fans and media sources. That’s evident, even in some of the comments above.
I just pray nobody gets seriously hurt and both beat up on the Steelers.
