Greetings from MileHighReport - A few good questions with the Broncos Blogger

Milehighreport_medium

Greetings Bengals fans!  Guru here from Mile High Report welcoming you to the start of the 2009 NFL Season and Broncos/Bengals week.

I must say, watching the Bengals on Hard Knocks has been must-see TV.  It has really shed light on how things are run in Cincinnati and gives a great look behind the scenes.

Kirkendall and I have a geat week of cross-blogging lined up as we head towards the game.  As part of that, feel free to ask any Broncos-related questions and I'll be happy to oblige.

So, got a Broncos question?  Fire away!   I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered! I'd appreciate a REC so that the post can stay at the top for the week!

Here's to a great start to the 2009 Season.  We may root for different teams, but I have a feeling we can agree that we are damn-glad to see the NFL back and games that matter!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors.

Who is going to start Sunday? Orton, Simms, Brandstader, or someone else? I hear Bubby Brister is still available….

What's up TarZander.

I’m not John (OP), but I’ll give my input on this:

On Sunday, I would expect Kyle Orton to start. He’s got some stitches in his right index finger as you probably know, but he’s going to work this week on throwing with those in place. Chris Simms has been taking snaps so far in practice again, which is good considering he suffered a high ankle sprain in Seattle. As for Tom Brandstater, he has looked really good in the preseason. He made a lot of “rookie mistakes” in his first outing, and came back the next week and fixed them. He’s got a ton of poise in the pocket, and his confidence and positivity on the field resonates to the players and coaches. However, he’s not ready yet. He’s still got a long way to go, but I believe Tom B is the future quarterback for our team.

As for Sunday, expect the depth chart to stay the same as it is now. Orton may wear a glove to protect his sutures, but ultimately, Simms might get the go ahead to start.

Yeah, I'd be shocked if KO starts this game

Dislocated digits aren’t fun at all. If it were the pinky, then yeah. But the index finger? I don’t see it.

Yes, I did.

In April, and even now, we had a lot of concerns regarding our linebacking group. I even wrote a piece prior to the draft explaining my personal opinions on why Rey should have been drafted to us. I thought they would scoop him up when they traded up, myself.

Which Trade?

We traded next year’s Broncos’ 1st round pick for Alphonso Smith.
We traded our two 3rd round picks this year for a second (Quinn) and a 4th.

I never thought about Maulauga because A. Smith was announced as the pick at the same time.

I was not surprised Maulauga dropped out of the 1st round. He’s a dynamic but at times overenthusiastic player.

Brace & Raji

The Broncos never had a realistic and financially responsible shot at Raji. We could have taken Brace, but we already had Ron Fields on the team. In retrospect we did not need a NT because we already had one. We also picked up a very promising CFA in Chris Baker. I like him every bit as much and maybe more than Raji and Brace so far.

Elvis

How do you think Elvis will match up against Whit? I tried to watch as much of the Broncs in preseason as I could to see what we’d be facing the first week. I think Whit is underrated, but Elvis seems to be garnering a lot of praise – especially since he’s short and can get under the Tackle. Your thoughts? P.S. — I was rooting for your team in the game against the Bears…

Doom

Doom is poetry and power in motion. Vastly underrated, he is short enough to get around larger LT’s and has exceptionally long arms for his body and so can surprise blockers with his reach. He has gone against one of the best, if not the best, LT’s in the Broncos’ own Ryan Clady. He made Orlando Pace looked like a peewee league player in the Chicago game. No offense, but Doom will smoke Whit.

How do you think your team will react in the first game with all the turmoil that has surrounded them? Is your coaching staff really as incompetent as they are portrayed to be in the national media?

by Raging Clue on Sep 7, 2009 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

Is that really possible?

In order to fully absorb the national media spin on the Broncos, you’d have to conclude that Josh MacDaniels somehow worked all these years in order to have the opportunity to destroy a franchise. It doesn’t add up.

McD has done some unconventional things. He eschewed the drafting for need concept that seems to enveloped the rest of the NFL. He puts a high value on character and on-field competitiveness, rather than looking at physical tools alone. He doesn’t believe an individual transcends the team. Some might say he’s long overdue, some might not. Only time will tell.

The real reason that Josh MacDaniels is so maligned is because of his pedigree, and the fact that he despises the media more than they despise him and does nothing to hide his disdain. He would be learning that you don’t pick fights with people who buy ink or airtime by the barrell, except he really doesn’t seem to care.

i just figured it was more mcdaniels trying to put forth the image that he’s in charge, much like the bengals did with ochocinco last year. i just figured it would probably end up working out the same way for the broncos that it did for us last year. the good news is, if your 2009 is anything like our 2008, you’ll know by halftime in the first game. that’s when i knew we weren’t going to win a lot of games last year.

Despite the 1-3 preseason record...

…this team has shown a lot of signs of good coaching and good motivation. Special teams appear leaps and bounds better— especially the coverage units. The tackling is more sound. They are very good at picking up blitzes. They play team defense, with everybody going to the whistle.

Honestly, the only area this team has yet to show any improvement in is redzone offense (ala Jay Cutler). They have stalled out or turned over the ball consistently in the redzone too much— but that’s exactly what they did through the duration of Cutler’s stopover.

by PredominantlyOrange on Sep 9, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Long story short...

…this team already better than any recent Broncos edition.

The Broncos will shock just about everybody who takes the media spin as the accurate spin…which is pretty much everybody— a large portion of Broncos ‘fans’ included.

With Fire!

The Broncos will be prepared and fired up. MHR is disgusted with the MSM coverage of the off-season Broncos and I think it is a safe assumption that the team is similarly disgusted and ready to prove themselves. The coaching staff is VERY experienced. It is a mistake to only look at McDaniel’s lack of head coaching experience. Our DC is Mike Nolan who was previously HC for the 49’s and one of the most respected DC’s in the NFL. We also added Nunnelly, formerly of the Chargers.

Add Turner, Dennison, and the new LB coach that we added (from the Raiders I think? Can’t recall his name) and it’s sort of funny that our HC is by far the least experienced coach of the group.

Coach McDaniels may have in some eyes made some bad moves but I think he will be a great coach, he has made this team tougher, more competitive and better football players.

improved D?

Hey John,
Some of your fans feel as though your D has improved this offseason… I’m curious how they improved this offseason and how good you think they can be.

by The Dealio on Sep 7, 2009 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

Well, we basically improved every position other then QB. And apparently, the Q is all the media seems to care about.

On Defense, we added 3 Veteran and proven players in our secondary. Its funny how people think Dawkins was great last year but suddenly a year later, he becomes old. We added Hill and Goodman as well. We recently added Vonnie Holliday to bulk up our d line and we have a capable NT in Ronnie Fields. Doom, Moss, And Ayers have so much potential and anyone of them can break out this year I like our LB with pro bowler DJ, Reid, and davis. On offense, we added a pro bowl talent RB in moreno as wel as retaining hillis and adding capable backs in buckhalter and jordan. Orton runs great in a system and can do well if given the right tools. He has the right tools in our o line as it is in the top 5 in the league with 3 pro bowl talents in there o line. They have tremendous depth at TE and Wr even without bmarsh. Royal is pure money. Stokely is a nice slot man. Gaffney knows the system. We have some playmakers in mckinly and lloyd as well………..Id say weve improved vastly

I think I can give this a shot...

Great question, Dealio. I’m Zo, rabid Bronco fan, and I don’t possess the writing skills of our fearless leader TSG (John Bena), but I think I can answer your question.
As many know, our D was historically bad last year. I would say that was an understatement. Over-pursuit, out of position, 10-yd cushions on 3rd and 5…just awful. During this offseason, our team set out to remedy this by cutting the deadweight (DC Slowik, Dre Bly, Nate Webster, Dewayne Robertson, ALL the Safeties), bringing in DC Nolan, along with the best position coaches from around the division (DL-Nunnely, LB-Martindale, ST-Priefer), and switching the alignment to a 5-2 ( http://www.milehighreport.com/2009/9/2/1010580/mhr-university-the-denver-broncos ).
This preseason showed our D has improved in a plethora of ways, from sound tackling to QB pressure, and still needed refinement in other areas, like turnovers and LB pass coverage. But after 3 years of decline, our D looked like an actual NFL-caliber D.
Oh, and we got DAWKINS!!!

Night And Day

The national press has had a field day despising the Broncos’ defense, draft, etc. ad nauseum. What they overlook is that it is almost completely different from last year. The team dismissed 3/4 of last year’s starters, brought in experienced veterans and added talented rookies (a 1st rounder, 3 second rounders, plus a real gem through UDFA in Chris Baker). The preseason indicates that scheme, personnel and attitude are all vastly improved over last year.

by Endzone on Sep 8, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

its not even just the players

adding great d coaches like Wanye Nunnley and Mike Nolan make this team better than they look on paper. In the past denver has tried to use smaller quicker, finese lineman. This year we brought bigger boys, who use power and size. Kenny Peterson has been great in the pre season at 5 tech d end. Ron Fields and Chirs Baker have played well, too. The other 5 tech d end was adressed the other day, we added Vonnie Holliday to come in and make an impact, and teach the young guys.

LB: Doom at OLB has been a beats in the 3-4, tackles will have trouble stopping him. The other OLB’s are Haggans who has done his job, Ayers who has a ton of upside and should start making strides throughout the year. Darrell Reid has showed the ability to help stop the run and make plays at a big olb at almost 280 lbs. D.J Williams should come back to form and play very well after an inujury filled year. and young guys Spencer Larsen and Wesley Woodyard who backup at ILB have broncos fans excited with their eletric play, Woodyard is good in pass coverage.

Secondary: Champ…nuff said, may not be the guy from 3 years ago, still very good though. Andre Goodman is a ballhawk, had 5 ints last year and should continue to force turnovers. We drafted Darcel McBath as a centerfielder FS, he seems to be the future FS and should take over vet Renaldo Hill maybe sometime this year, Alphonso smith and jack williams are young athletic corners who are also ballhwaks. David Bruton out of ND was drafted in the 4th round this year he is a good ST and makes plays on D, good tackler. And of course WEAPON X AKA BRIAN DAWKINS. Secondary is no doubt our strength. We have a very good mix of youth and vets who should make up a solid D. were focusing on turnovers and pass rush. The rush is there, turnovers are coming, run stop has been good so far.

Spread offense

What type of offense has/will Denver run? Is McDaniels going to bring the spread with a good dose of shotgun to Denver, like he did with the Pats?

by bengalsneedagm on Sep 7, 2009 6:25 PM EDT reply actions

I think our offense is predicated on the spread formation.

What I’ve learned through the great writers as MHR is what exactly the spread is, and why it’s used. I believe they will use a shotgun formation more often than not. It helps guys with mobility issues (such as Kyle Orton). I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a 50/50 mixture of shotgun and under center type plays this year. However, I think the basis of McDaniels’ spread system is based on the shotgun formation. It makes it very hard for teams to stack up in the box and blitz successfully.

The key to the success of our system is 100% execution. The receivers and quarterback need to have their timing perfect. This is the big difference between our offense last year and the offense this year. Last year, Cutler would take the snap, and in my opinion, he relied a lot on the receivers speed and vertical game. If the spread offense is run correctly with us, the downhill speed of a receiver isn’t that much of an issue.

One huge aspect of our offense this year is fundamentals in ball control. It’s all about having the perfect mixture of run vs. pass. It really helps having receivers like Stokley and Marshall that can spread the field vertically, leaving some room in the secondary for short passes and run situations. Also, expect the screens and bubble plays to be a large part of the system, but not all of it. Contrary to what we’ve seen in preseason, the short passing game isn’t the focal point of this offense. It’s our running game that will win us games this year. Kyle Orton is essentially the point guard.

Someone with more knowledge of the spread we’re using would be able to answer further.

by Joe Medina on Sep 7, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks

for the quick response.

So to expand further on this, do you think they plan on running the ball a lot out of the spread (w/o any or many tight ends and running backs?). The Bengals run defense was boosted by the back seven last year, so if they’re forced to spread out in a nickel or dime defense, that could be an issue in stopping Moreno.

by bengalsneedagm on Sep 7, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, here's where it gets tricky.

The running plays called out of shotgun are a big part of this new offense. I’ve never liked run plays out of the shotgun, but if the receivers and line block correctly, it will make up for a decent gain on the ground every time. It’s tough to say at this point how much the run game will come from shotgun, but I would bet a large part of it will come out of that.

The one single key to our offensives success this year is Moreno. He’s got serious speed and he’ll make you miss and pay dearly for it. If he’s healthy, our offense can be very potent. If he gets injured again, it’s going to be a lot tougher to make big gains on the ground. I like Correll Buckhalter. He’s got a downhill type speed. Peyton Hillis is a terrorist in the RZ. Since he’s listed as a fullback on game day, he’s often overlooked by teams when planning against us. He’s big, physical and can kill you up the gut, or around the sides. Lamont Jordan wasn’t on my list of players to make the final cut. He’s slow, and the only thing keeping him here is his knowledge of the offense (in my opinion). Our run game has a lot of valuable weapons, but the true key to our success is Moreno. No one knows how to plan against him yet, and that could work in our favor early on if he gets enough snaps.

by Joe Medina on Sep 7, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, yeah, kinda...lol

The 2009 Denver Broncos will feature what has been termed the “Ameoba”-style offense. Have any ideas what that means? No? Good.
Our O will attempt to exploit what ever the opposition has a weakness in. Can’t cover more than 2 WR’s? Have some 4 WR sets. Can’t stop the inside run? Say hello to KnoMo and the Rumblin Redneck. Have trouble covering the flats? Healthy doses of HB and WR screens are the order of the day. Basically, our O is going to find a weakness, and dig our finger in that open wound until the opposition passes out. This team is equipped with the tools in every facet, from the running game (Moreno, Hillis, Buckhalter), Tight Ends (Graham, Scheffler), Wide Receivers (Marshall, Royal, Stokely, Gaffney, Lloyd, McKinley), and the Continental Divide (Clady, Hamilton, Weigmann, Kuper, Harris), and will have one of the brightest offensive coaches of the past decade calling the shots in Coach McDaniels.
Be prepared to watch your nickelback get targeted for a majority of the game.
Good Luck!

Not every facet

You forgot about quarterback. And no one is really afraid of any of Denver’s QBs. And I’m pretty sure the general gameplan of most teams is to exploit the oppositions weaknesses. But I trust zimmer to be the one bengals coach to actually make adjustments and do his best to roll help to the weak spots.

I’ll look forward to maualuga blowing up a knomo screen

by brandone on Sep 7, 2009 8:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Good point. Here is my counter-point

Our QB position has taken a step back, physically. I will concede that, because KO isn’t what former Employee #6 is in the athletic dept. But this offense doesn’t need a “laser-rocket” armed QB to excel. Whatever we lost in physicality and athletic ability, we gained in leadership and game management. For all the talent 6 had, he was a terrible leader, and he was turnover-prone at the worst times. We don’t know what KO will bring to the O, but those other 10 on the field got his back, and that tells me he is a leader.
Oh, and all the cussin in the world won’t make a nickelback for Zim. I say let him roll coverage over. We’ll just attack the hole made there. And Rey gotta catch KnoMo first. We’ll see how great Rey is when Hillis trucks the stripes off his helmet…
Great point, though. I didn’t purposely keep the QB out of my previous post. Just got excited, I guess.
Good luck on Sunday, brandone.

We Are Asking The Same Question

We really don’t know what offense the Broncos will run. Coach McDaniels has stated that every game will have its own unique game plan. The preseason was pretty vanilla. The best answer I can offer right now is that I honestly do not know. One game may be pass heavy, the next run heavy, but overall I think we will see a reasonably balanced scheme of attack.

NFL games typically feature a lot of passing in the first half as each team strives to achieve a lead. The team with the lead will then typically run the ball more in the second half to control the clock and preserve their lead. However, I think you will see a healthy dose of our new 1st round pick Knowshon Moreno running the ball in the 1st half.

by Endzone on Sep 8, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

this is how im breaking it down

Just like the Bengals will have a hard time covering Stokley and Gaffney. The Broncos will struggle to cover Henry and Caldwell. Try and put 5"9’ alphonso smith on 6"4’ Chris Henry. Thats not a good match up. And where is Marshall in this Equation? he’s the biggest wildcard. Is he even inserted into the playbook yet? If hes in the game and the #1 Wideout, then fine, he’s the best on the field. And i love Eddie Royal, if Denver’s Offense can reach its potential then Royal should catch 100 balls. But Stokley hasnt done anything, and is just getting older. And isnt Gaffney hurt? Chad Ocho johnson is back. I’m sure of it. Add Coles and Caldwell. And we have the deepest WR corps in the league. On defense, is Champ… well champ? The Bengals have one of the best tandem at CB’s in the league. If the Bengals pass rush comes through, watch what these guys can do.

Where are we going to get a pass rush? Where are the Broncos getting their rush? Dumerville and? Sure Doom is a great pass rusher. But he gets knocked around in the run game. I bet Doom will get a sack because Whitworth is so tall. But the Bengals have looked good with their blitzes. Maualuga and Rivers have been all over the place. While Michael Johnson has looked like a freak. But Ryan Clady should hold down the left side. He is the Best pass protecting LT in the league. And Daniel Graham will pick up the blitzes.

When it comes to the run game. Its a push based on matchups. Denver has the better rushing attack. but their rush defense was so bad last season, and they really didnt do too much to improve it. Kenny Peterson has looked good. But im not sold on Ron Fields. And the Bengals D was good against the run last season, and should get better with out additions and growth of young players.

Then theres the QB. Its not a question, and it shouldnt be discussed.

One of my best friends in a lifelong Broncos fan.

Stokley may lack the big stats…but he is Mr. Clutch. He is our go-to guy when we really need to make something happen. I assure you he is still one of the best slot WRs in the league.

Gaffney is indeed hurt and I do not think he’ll play in this game.

It’s amazing how many teams claim the ‘deepest WR corps in the league’…and they’re all convinced of it. Of course they’re all wrong ‘cause Denver clearly has the ’deepest WR corps’. lol.

But seriously, Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, Jabar Gaffney (once healthy), Brandon Lloyd, and an impressive looking rook named Kenny McKinley (South Carolina HC Steve Spurrier said McKinley was the best WR he’s coached)? Not too shabby.

In terms of defensive positions, 10 out of 11 are different than last year’s starters (Bailey being the only holdover).

I think most Broncos fans would blame a horrendous defensive scheme for much of our defensive woes last year. We have completely changed our scheme and brought in Mike Nolan, who may not have made a great HC but is an excellent DC. I don’t think we’ll struggle in run defense or pass rush as in past years; however, I think our LBs pass coverage is now a weakness. If this defensive unit is not significantly improved I’ll be very surprised.

Our offensive line is one of the best in football, only giving up 6.5 sacks last season, and according to Football Outsiders was the best run blocking offensive line in the NFL.

The major question mark is obviously at QB. I’d actually be very surprised if Orton doesn’t start. Some of you clearly don’t think too highly of Orton; however, I don’t think he was set up to be successful in Chicago (bad offensive line, poor scheme, and lack of talent around him) and will prove to be a much better QB than people think. He ran a very similar offense to McD’s at Purdue and was quite successful in it. Regardless of who is playing at QB…the Broncos are not in a position where they need the QB to be the hero and win the game for them. He’s just got to manage the game, limit mistakes, and get the ball to the playmakers.

I think people have bought into all the drama and negativity surronding the Broncos this offseason and are overlooking a team that may be considerably better than most people seem to expect. Or maybe they won’t be. ;-)

Two things that the Broncos have specifically done to improve the run defense:

1. They have added quite a bit of bulk to the front seven. I think I read that they added 20 lbs average weight on the defensive line and nearly 30 lbs average weight at LB. The Broncos were a small and fast defense, which is a big reason that they had so much trouble stopping the run. McDaniels has said that one of his first priorities was to add size to front seven.

2. If preseason is any indication, the Broncos will be running a predominantly 52 look on likely running downs. Again, that may cause some mid-range pass coverage issues, but it should help significantly against the run and in getting a pass rush.

i hope they were adding wieght, they switched to a 3-4
DEs need to be at least 280 lbs
And LBs need to be at least 240 lbs

They are all that and more

6 of 7 DL’s are 295+ (285 – 324)
7 of 8 LB’s are 240+ (5 of them between 250 and 275)

Small Correction

We also retained DJ Williams and Dumervil (“Doom”) as starters. 3 out of 11 starters including Champ!

by Endzone on Sep 8, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

My point was that only one position remains the same. Doom moved to OLB and DJ moved to ILB. There are three player holdovers (4 if you count Peterson, which I don’t because he wasn’t really a starter. I believe even he has moved from DT to DE).

Sorry. You DID say positions rather than players. True! We moved from a 4-3 base to a 3-4 (or 5-2) base defense. Positions are very different from last year.

Good breakdown, firstPick.

I would like to refute a few of your observations, though. I also thought I heard that Andre Caldwell was on IR, but I could be mistaken. If so, my apologies.
Now, would the 5’ 9" Smith man up with 6’ 5" Chris Henry? Probably not, but I’m not the coach. My guess would be that Andre Goodman would move to the nickelback, and Smith would cover Coles, who stands about 5’ 10". Oh, and Marshall? Well, we’ll just have to see whats what there. Personally, I think we will see BM take the field Wk 1, and be BM.
I know most of you haven’t paid any mind to the Broncos actual preseason games this year, but our D might surprise you. Great penetration up front, Doom making the transition to OLB well, and our secondary will be solid. There is work to be done still, but anything is better than last yr, right?
I’ll give you one name to look out for on Sunday…Chris Baker. Ronnie Fields has been solid, but Mount Baker is a monster-to-be, if you will. A ton of potential, and damn near a ton of man.

I agree the Denver D does look better in preseason. Im laid off and have seen every preseason game this year (thanks to NFL network)
Yeah i also like the Rookie Chris Baker, and i thought Doom looked good, and i liked the way the coaches used him (both sides, and getting him matched up on TEs and FBs)

He’s actually our #3 WR. because he plays the slot. durring the preseason he was playing with the 1st team and then sitting, while Chris Henry was playing deep into the 2nd half with the backups

I think denver is underestimating the BM situation

You’re talking to fans of the only team to successfully keep their diva receiver in the same place. We all dealt with Chad Johnson last year and no matter how much anyone on denver says that they aren’t worrying about the way he’s acting, that grates on people. I get pissed when someone who works for me is slacking and these guys are at the height of a professional sports career. So to say what he’s been doing won’t affect the team is shortsighted. Just like COC, I think if by halftime of this game the Bengals have jumped out to a lead, he’s not going to be the receiver that he can or should be.

I do like royal and stokely though. But stokely isn’t a #2 and if they have to suspend Marshall for any more time this season, you’re going to be in real trouble. Because marshall and stokely are never going to be enough to force a team to not throw 8 in the box on moreno.

as for the CBs, now you’re rolling your nickel corner on coles? he can be a #1 WR on a few teams in this league, and can have a monster of a season. Just like when Denver has marshall playing well, I don’t think any team in this league is deep enough in the secondary to cover all these receivers. The only major advantage i see is that Cincinnati has Palmer throwing to theirs while denver has an injured Kyle Orton.

Anyway, good luck, i’d like to see Denver do well this year, just because I like how they have handled marshall thus far. I just really don’t want them to get off to a 1-0 start. Haha.

One think go consider is that if the Broncos are short-handed at WR, I don’t think McD would have any problem whatsoever putting Scheffler or Hillis as a wide out. Scheff is really more of a WR than a TE anyway…but has always just been put at TE due to his size. Hillis is a versatility monster who can literally do just about anything and everything that is asked of him.

"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

by PosterNutbag on Sep 8, 2009 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I like to think of Scheffler as Dallas Clark, but a bigger target. He can definitely catch (see chicago vs denver 2007, catching the ball horizontally).

Hillis…….. I don’t really know what he is. He just is what he is. A beast. That’s about it. The guy is a freak of nature and blows up any person trying to take him down.

Coles could be a #1 WR? You really believe that?

Now, let me be clear…
I know that a rookie nickelback lining up across from Coles could pose a few problems. But this ain’t Lavernaus Coles of earlier this decade. He can be covered. I still respect all he has done, but it seems like Bengals fans are expecting a lil much out of him.
Now, if TJ was still there, then I would worry. But I’m not too afraid of Coles. Like I said above, I’m not the coach. I base my theory on how to cover off what I would do in Madden, so take it for what its worth. Just my opinion.
And good luck to you as well. Here’s hoping for a great game with minimal injuries.

I guess you would base yours on your vast knowledge and experience as an NFL coach, right?

No sir, not all of my comments are based on my enjoyment of Madden NFL video games. I’m pretty sure I made it clear that I’m no coach, and that, because I’m a fan of the Madden franchise, I would make that adjustment if I were faced with the scenario in the video game.
But, you know, since you are quick to discredit what I posted based on my enjoyment of Madden, I suggest you skip my posts, seeing how my admitted lack of coaching experience offended you.

Good luck on Sunday.

Come on guys

This has been a good discussion, let’s not start bickering. My point is you don’t think coles is an upgrade to #1for say… The bears, eagles, giants, and a number of other teams?

by brandone on Sep 8, 2009 4:48 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Not really, b.

Eagles – Jackson, Maclin, maybe Curtis
Giants – Smith, Hixon, Nicks
Bears – I could see that, but 6 would just overthrow Coles, then blame him for not growing 5 inches on the pass.

I mean, Coles is a solid guy, but he isn’t what he used to be. The Jets, a team looking for a WR, didn’t even want him. I know there is history there with Coles and Jets mgmt, but if they really thought he was worth a pay raise, don’t you think they would have paid him accordingly?
I’m not trying to bash the guy, though. He is solid. I’m just going off of the earlier post about how to cover Cincy’s 3 WR sets with what Denver has. I’m certain that there is a matchup problem for us in that set, but its not as big a problem as it would be if TJ was still there, right?
Who would you rather have right now, Coles or Houshmanzedah?

No inspirational quote here, just this...GO BRONCOS!!!

by Zogernaut on Sep 8, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

right now?

Housh. But that’s not really the question that I had thrown out.

While I believe that jackson is a good receiver and next year could be better than coles, I think coles is more polished and has the experience, which is very helpful. and rookie receivers are usually worse.

Giants – see the above rookie disclaimers

My main point is that while i don’t believe it’s the case with every team, I believe that coles could be a #1 on a handful of teams. And honestly, coles could be a #2 on probably 50% of teams and so could Chris Henry. Although that’s if CH gets back to his old form, which I believe he will.

I was mainly trying to point out that no matter who you throw your nickel corner on, they’re going to have some issues.

Losing shanahan

I have a question about the running game. How successful do you really feel it’s going to be? I know Denver has always been able to take players who were mediocre and turn them into 1000 yd rushers, but I also feel like this was predicated on shanahans zone blocking schemes. Do you feel like you’ll be able to pull it off with that shift?

by brandone on Sep 8, 2009 2:17 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Great question, brandone

I would say that our run game should be just as lethal as ever. I predicate this on the retainment of the “masterminds behind the MasterMind.”
Let me explain;
Mike Shanahan deserves the credit he is given, but the zone-blocking, 1 cut & go rushing attack has been in the hands of two of the best position coaches in the League, RB coach Bobby Turner and OL coach Rick Dennison. After Shanahan was ‘terminated’, and Josh McDaniels was hired, Denver proceeded to clean house. The only real constant was the retainment of Turner and Dennison, and then we FINALLY used a 1st-rounder on a RB.
With all those variables, I personally feel like this year’s rushing attack can rival what Clinton Portis did before we traded him. KnoMo is a rook, but its common knowledge that rookie RBs usually have the easiest transition to the pros. I do feel confident that our rushing attack will be just fine.

Broncos weaknesses

Hi, Bengals fans,

The main weakness I see for the Broncos defense is the TE/RB short pass defense. We are running a 52 defense, meaning the OLBs from a 34 are playing up on the line as DEs. They aren’t top tier pass defenders and usually don’t have to pass defend. We typically rush all 5 on the line. This puts pressure on our ILBs to pick up the RB out of the backfield and sometimes the TE if the safety isn’t playing up. It also requires either the ILB or the OLB to recognize a RB delaying out into the flat for the dump. We haven’t done that well in the preseason. Our starting SILB, Andra Davis, is poor in pass defense (and I’m being polite). I think on 1st and 10, we are wide open for exploitation of the TE crossing or the RB screen wide because Davis is a liability in that situation, especially off of a play action. Our 3rd down pass defense LB, Woodyard, is light for a LB and isn’t quite as good against the run, but much better in pass defense. If Palmer can also pick up where the blitz is coming from, we are going to be vulnerable to the dumpoff as long as Palmer can figure out who is open because our LB/DEs haven’t done well in picking up a outlet pass person during blitzes. I think that the way we are mitigating this weakness is through a ferocious pass rush. The rush this year is a different scheme, with larger players, and 5 on the line instead of 4. Even so, if Palmer uses COC, Coles, et al, as vertical threats, the short middle game and flat pass game might be wide open. If we bring up the safeties to support the middle pass defense, it puts the wideouts in man coverage and if Palmer has the time, that’s a TD waiting to happen.

On offense, we are quite balanced. There are no glaring weaknesses, but if I have to pick one, its going to be the Orton/receiver communication quality. Orton can throw accurately, but the passes he’s been working on in preseason are mostly timing patterns where the ball is in the air before the receiver breaks. Sometimes, the communication is poor and the receiver has broken the wrong way, or Orton was incorrect on the route. If that happens, there will be picks. This is a complex offense based on responding to what the defense is giving or keying on a specific position to exploit it. Our weakness is that it may be too complex to run smoothly in week 1. The fans might make a difference if they are really loud all game. Also, wWatch for Orton to go long early, just once or twice, just to show he can and thus keep the safeties honest.

That said, I think the Broncos win this game (hey, I’m a Bronco fan.) But as soon as this game is over, I wish the Bengals go undefeated, especially winning against KC, SD, and the-team-whose-name-shall-not-be-mentioned. And as is my constant prayer, let’s hope for an injury free game for both teams. Go Broncos!

Wherever you go, there you are.

Scouts Inc. Position Advantage

After breaking down film of both teams, Scouts Inc. offers 10 things to watch for in this week’s Bengals-Broncos matchup.

1. Denver needs to control the clock as well as the line of scrimmage. Denver is not apt to be a quick strike team this year and will need to pound the ball and sustain long scoring drives in order to be successful. Head coach Josh McDaniels knows that the Bengals can strike quick and will want to keep the ball out of QB Carson Palmer’s hands.

2. Expect the Broncos to run a lot of off-tackle plays: Denver has a good stable of powerful ball carriers with Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan toting the ball and can give the defense a change of pace ball carrier in rookie Knowshon Moreno. They will want to attack the Bengals on the perimeter where they can wear down the smaller defensive ends and outside linebackers.

3. Denver will look to prevent the big play: Denver lacks the big play defenders that can pressure the pocket on a consistent basis and will need to provide quality help over the top for their cornerbacks. They may give up their share of short passes but will look to keep at least a couple defenders back deep to prevent Cincinnati’s speedy receivers from turning a short pass into a long gain.

4. Look for the Broncos to use a lot of trickery up front: Since the Broncos are apt to struggle when it comes to bringing a lot of heat with their base package, expect them to use a lot of twists and stunts to try and confuse the offensive line for the Bengals. This also allows Denver to blitz their linebackers from different angles which can create mismatches as Cincinnati tries to match up against speed.

5. Look for Denver to flood zones with their multiple receiver sets: Denver will run out of a trips set for most of the game, employing a single back with no lead blocker. But when they try to throw the ball, they will generally flood areas of the field at different levels in order to force the secondary to pick who they want to focus on.

6. Cincinnati will try to get Chad Ochocinco involved early: He is their best threat both for the deep ball as well as underneath routes. If he gets on a roll from the start, he can be very difficult to control. Cincinnati has a relatively pedestrian ground game and will need to move the ball through the air if they want to move the chains on a consistent basis.

7. Expect the Bengals to take some shots downfield: Head coach Marvin Lewis and offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski want to score early and force Denver into a catch-up game and the best way to do that is to strike with a long ball, or two, looking to both Ochocinco and Chris Henry who both possess the speed to take it all the way once they can get behind the secondary.

8. Cincinnati needs to create turnovers: The Bengals have struggled to prevent long drives by their opponents and will need to find ways to stop the bleeding. One of the best ways to stop a drive is to create a turnover. The secondary will play aggressive coverage and for tacklers to try and strip the ball from the ball carriers in this game.

9. Look for Cincinnati to try and take away Denver’s ground game: With all of the changes that have taken place in Denver, the Bengals are going to try and force them to throw the ball in order to create turnovers in the form of interceptions. The Broncos had six interceptions in the preseason, second most in the AFC, and starting QB Kyle Orton has struggled getting used to his receivers and the new system.

10. Matchup to watch: Denver DE Elvis Dumervil vs. Cincinnati LOT Andrew Whitworth: Dumervil led the Broncos in sacks with five last year and this year he will be coming from a more natural position, outside linebacker. This allows defensive coordinator Mike Nolan to move Dumervil around and send him from different angles to make it more difficult to find him. Whitworth needs to contain Dumervil and limit his opportunities to get to Palmer.

Prediction
 Denver 20
Cincinnati 21

what film were they breaking down? if it was from the preseason, then i have to wonder their definition of “struggled to prevent long drives by their opponents.” last i checked, the bengals d allowed about one long drive per game this preseason. if that’s struggling, then i’d really like to see success.

WOW, INCREDIBLE INSIGHT!!!!!!
  1. Don’t all teams try and prevent the big play on defense?

Maybe that’s how the patriots do it? Man, I wish we would have thought of that last year. Prevent the big play. Man, I’ll make sure I email that to Josh McDaniels. He probably hasn’t thought to tell his defense that.
