Ocho Cinco our new kicker? seriously

Ocho Cinco will be punting and kicking field goals at this weekends probowl in Miami, you can check out the videos of him in practice I will post the links to the videos of him at the probowl. I know he made his kick when Shayne didnt.

Chad Ochocinco hopes to show a Pro Bowl audience that he can kick it as well as catch it.

Ochocinco Ochocinco

The Bengals receiver made some kickoffs Thursday during practice for the Pro Bowl in Miami, hoping to convince the coaches that he's capable of going toe-to-toe. He showed off his punting skills during warmups a day earlier.

Ochocinco told The Associated Press in a phone interview after practice that he's also planning to kick field goals during practice this week. He wants to persuade AFC coaches that he could be more than a just receiver during the game on Sunday.

"Yesterday was punting, today was kickoffs, tomorrow will be field goals," Ochocinco said of his lobbying effort. "I don't know. We'll see what happens."

If the coaches want more proof, he's got the tape.

The six-time Pro Bowl receiver is an international soccer fan and practices kicking. He had never done it during a game until last August, when Bengals kicker Shayne Graham was bothered by a sore groin in practice before a preseason game against the New England Patriots in Foxborough.

Ochocinco kicked an extra point and had a deep kickoff as Graham's replacement, providing the winning point in Cincinnati's 7-6 victory. Afterward, he referred to himself as "Esteban Ochocinco, the most interesting footballer in the world."

He'd like to do it again on the all-star stage.

"It shouldn't be a problem," he said. "If they're going to let me do it, I'm going to do it early in the game before they get serious and they start to play for real."

Hell, that's a money smart move for MB, too

We could use that 2.5 mil elsewhere rather than on Graham’s worthless ass

Slim 15, you will be missed. RIP Chris Henry

Yeah BUT

Even if Chad was seriously good enough to consistently kick off and be the team’s primary kicker, he (as well as the Players Association) would demand that he be paid more for performing both duties.

A reason why you would never see this happen for any team.

Remember when Wes Welker played for Miami and he kicked a field goal, kicked off and even scored a receiving TD in the same game? (A real game, not pre-season)

Point being, Chad’s not the first guy, I’m sure, who’s lobbied to do this. Even if he was able, the team would have to pony up more cash. At that point, you might as well just pay a real kicker.

I hate to say that he couldn’t be worse than Graham, because as soon as you say that you know something bad will happen… but it would be hard.

How is this a good idea???

What if he messes up his hammy or his groin? What then? For kicking FGs. Just sign a good kicker. Anyone else can’t be worse than Shayne, or at least the Shayne of ’09, I mean, he was pretty good until before the ’07 season, when all his problems began, am I right or wrong?

End of 06 actually, when he missed the extra point in Denver and then the FG to win the finale.

I’m ok with Chad kicking once in a while, but I wouldn’t want to go without a real PK on the roster. Not worried about him getting hurt while kicking (what a sissy fear) but after a long drive that ends up with a long field goal attempt, you’d like to have your kicker be a guy that’s rested and has been practicing a bit, not a guy who is dog tired from running full out for the past 13 plays.

As for Shayne, he’s fine. Yes it sucks that he missed both attempts in the playoffs, but stuff like that happens. He certainly wasn’t the only guy to miss important kicks in the playoffs this year, there were a lot of them. If you look at Shayne’s stats for the year he made 23 out of 28, which isn’t bad, but if you consider the fact that he started 4 of 7 while struggling with a terrible long snapper, then after they brought in a new snapper Shayne finished 19 of 21, that’s VERY good. He’s in the top 6 or 8 in the league, without question. Saying anyone else “couldn’t be worse” is just foolish.

What have you been watching!

Shank Graham was paid a lot of money to make clutch FG’s. Even half of all of his clutch kicks. He couldn’t even do that! He simply can’t do it. He has a hard time making clutch ones. Look and see in the past years and tell me about if he’s good enough.
Let him go now…

I think Graham’s confidence is shot. Even after they sent St. Louis where he belongs (greeting blue hairs at Wal-Mart) I think he has too much noise going on in his head and will never be the same. Go a different route…but not down the Ochocinco expressway.

after they brought in a decent long snapper Graham only missed 2 out of 21 in the regular season. Who are these other kickers that are better than him that you’d rather have? Can you name one kicker in the entire league that hasn’t had fans crying that he can’t hit the clutch kicks? Vinatieri had a good streak for a few years, but he’s disappeared. No one else avoids that fan reaction because the only time you talk about a kicker is when he misses.

Even if you’re right and his confidence is shot and/or he never could make a FG with the game on the line (which is rubbish), who do you replace him with? Where are these clutch FG kickers that the Bengals should bring in?

by indesignkat on Feb 2, 2010 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

rubbish?

I don’t know what you are seeing/watching!? Every year for the past 4 years Shank has missed clutch FG’s. And he missed more than two this year. I know the timing was off with BSL but, chip shots are chip shots and there were two more he missed in the beginning of the season. With or without BSL, he should have made two of them.
Oh, and clutch doesn’t just mean game winning either. Remember the Raiders game? Sometimes clutch FG’s means a key FG.(see playoff game against the jets)
Shank Graham blows, and we need a new kicker, period……!
And for a kicker to replace Shank, half the kickers out there can do what he does, but need a chance to get better. Shank has proved it. He isn’t getting any better, he’s getting worse.

The voice of reason

is drowned out in the sea of hysteria….

I applaud your effort indesignkat, but unless Graham makes a game winning superbowl kick, Bengals fans are never going to want him to kick for Cincy again…no matter how good he is.

This is our year!
