Would you have guessed that we would be looking at a 2-3 team going into the bye week? Would you have guessed that we would lose to the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the cell dweller Cleveland Browns? Is it now time to hit the panic button?
Sunday may have been the toughest loss in Marvin Lewis' mediocre tenure with the Bengals. Sunday may have put the nail in the coffin for a team that came into the regular season with such high expectations. The Cincinnati Bengals had to be 4-1 going into this now crucial bye.
"Taking a look at the five games we’ve played, there have been a lot of things done very positively, very well," Lewis said. "We need to continue to build on those. And look at some of the things we’re not doing well enough and take hard looks at those. Revise, cut out, eliminate so that we eliminate the error and lack of execution in some things we’re doing. Don’t hurt ourselves with some of the things that have (hurt), with cadences and so forth, particularly offensively. Those are the things from a technical standpoint."
Bengals Nation has been hearing this same speech for 8 mediocre years. At some point, words are going to have to turn into actions. I have never seen a team make so many selfish mental errors, stupid errors. The Bengals are tied for fifth in the NFL with 36 penalties.
The team is also 30th in sacks per pass and 27th in covering kickoffs as well as 31st in returning them. They are also 24th in average per rush and 25th in converting third downs as well as 22nd in stopping third down. The Bengals are ninth in total offense and 17th in scoring. The defense is 14th overall, but also 17th in scoring.
Yes Marvin, you're preachin' to the choir, we know this team has to revise and cut our errors.
It's time for this team and organization to find their identity and win some damn football games. The days of playing down to your opponent's level has to end along with the ridiculous mental mistakes this team makes religiously. The next 11 opponents the Bengals will face have a combined 28-23 record. Cincinnati Bengals schedule. Every game from here on out is a must win and your Cincinnati Bengals have no choice but to step up to the challenge.
"As I look at it right now, we'll have to win out. It's as simple as that," safety Chris Crocker said.
At this point, it doesn't look very simple.
