NFL Suspends Bengals Defensive End Antwan Odom Four Games
In early September, reports surfaced that Antwan Odom tested positive for a prescription drug that was banned by the league, violating the league's substance policy. In response Odom pleaded to fans and teammates to have faith and patience in him. The issue sat in appeals for some time after being tested positive.
UPDATE: Joe Reedy tweets:
Odom's attorney, David Cornwell, said the positive test was he took one of his wife's prescription weight loss pills by mistake.
However, on Friday the NFL announced that Odom is suspended four games without pay for "violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances". The suspension takes effect right now, which means Odom will miss games against Atlanta, Miami, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis.
Odom has largely gone unnoticed this year, not recording a quarterback sack and only recording four total tackles.

At least a couple
Given the Bengals medical staff though, he’ll probably be in a wheelchair. Odom has been a ghost this year anyways. I’d rather they get Johnson in there more, maybe play Atkins at DE too.
He's been a complete free agent bust.
I know he was leading the league in sacks last year before his injury but most of those came in a game against the Packers who have a terrible O Line. I don’t think he’ll be missed.

You're right he won't
He was beating up on a backup’s backup in Green bay.

I think the only bad thing out of this is that we have to listen to more "Criminals and Cheaters" labels from media and AFC North Fans.
I’m still waiting to see if Odom changes his tune a bit after this but even so, this is essentially preventing him from getting on the field until healthy anyway so double win there. ALso gives us a chance to put in our other guys.
For once, can Dunlap surpass Rucker though? Or Geathers?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
CHEATERS! Bungholes should just hang up the cleats now….it’s over!

Looks like Dunlap is a bust
We need help with our pass rush; he is healthy and yet he still can’t see the field. I wasn’t a huge fan of that pick to start. Florida DE’s never pan out.
First round talent in the second round.
BPA? Yeh, I’d take it too. Hindsight is 20/20, draft is a gamble, etc.

How do you know he is a bust if he doesnt play?
He was injured for the start of the year and Odom and Geathers are getting paid alot of money so they are going to play no matter what, because thats a Mike Brown thing
We've been saying that about Simpson for 3 years
It’s just a knee jerk reaction at this point.
This is our year!
RE: Dunlap
You HAVE to give the kid some time. Five weeks into a season is far too early to label “bust” on anyone from the first pick to the last. Furthermore, the Bengals planned on having Dunlap bulk up so he can be used more as an inside pass rusher. Give him time.

+1 Dunlap is no bust
Rey Maualuga might be if he is not moved inside

I may have been harsh to call him a bust. I’m usually all for giving guys some time but where Simpson and Coffman were labeled as projects from day 1, he seems to be much more “game ready”. Not only has he been inactive, but I really haven’t heard the coaches even talk about him yet.
Maybe the whole curse of the Florida DE thing is making me more nervous than normal.

I want to see what he can do.
The guy had a more impressive combine than Jean Pierre Paul. They should just keep him at end though. Bengals always move guys away from what they did and college and it rarely seems to work out. Put him on the edge and let him go to work.
Rarely works out
see Rey Maualuga for reference, he should be at middle as soon as we can get him there. I’m surprised we don’t run the 3-4, we have the linebackers for it, the one thing we are lacking is nose tackle but Peko might be decent at the spot.

Odom has been ineffective anyway
He was ill and lost a lot of weight. If he uses the 4 weeks to train, heal and put some weight back on maybe he will be of some use in the 2nd half. Could end up being a good thing.
"If we always agree, one of us is not necessary"
And we should care about this because?
he hasn’t done anything anyways, maybe his backups can show us a little production. I mean this guy has really been the bust as far as free agents go

RE:
Don’t be surprised if he’s one of the veteran cuts next offseason. That would, of course, have to depend on their younger guys like Dunlap, MJ and Fanene’s contract is expiring after this year.

Odom has sucked this year. This is completely true. But how much of that is coming back from injury, how much of that is people concentrating on him more after what he did in Green Bay, and how much of that is side effects from the unintentional excessive weight loss that doubtless sapped much of his strength?
I think he’s already been punished enough by the side-effects of the diuretic. But maybe with four weeks off he can take the time to get healthy, rebuild some of the lost muscle, and treat this time off like a mini offseason. If he can come back healthy and strong again, maybe this will actually be a minor blessing in disguise.
Might be a good thing
Jungle John nailed it when he said Odom should heal and put on some more weight. Odom was doing really well last year up until the Texans game. I still think he can turn it
around. I think Dunlap, Johnson, Rucker, and Fanene can excel at end.
Some of you guys are saying Odom and Dunlap are a bust. Well, you should be talking about Robert Geathers. He has done nothing but been opportunistic with some fumble recoveries or easy sacks. He’s overpaid and under performing.
I love how we like to say some of these guys are a bust, but the truth is the coaching and management suck! No development. Look at players like Kevin Walter, Justin Smith, Takeo Spikes and even Madieu Williams. They leave the Bengals and make huge impacts on their respective teams. Kelly Washington was even catching TDs, e.g. the famous squirrel dance. It’s soo frustrating.
If the guy isn't hurt, he is suspended. Yet another amazing over paid waste of a FA signing.
The question is: Are they going to continue to beat a dead horse and make this work, or are they going to cut him?
As far as Dunlap goes, we shouldn’t be surprised that our coaching staff isn’t innovative enough to figure out how to use our personnel. We always want to make them something they are not. God forbid we we ever draft a Percy Harvin type player; he would waste away on the sidelines.
Robert Geathers doesn’t scare anyone, and he is overpaid and under performing as well.
+1

He "took one of his wife's pills"?
This is the oldest and stupidest excuse for testing positive on something. With today’s athletes and all the pills and lifting they take to make millions of dollars, under the full knowledge that taking something wrong could get them in trouble or not produce the results they want – how do they possibly mistake pills? Especially a weight-loss pill? I call shinanagans.
Moisture is the essense of wetness, and wetness is the essense of beauty.
ANOTHER BENGALS FREE AGENT BUST
Odom’s a bust anyway, before this. Seven seasons in the NFL, and he’s started every game in a season one time including zero times with the Bengals. He’s clearly an injury prone guy who benefited from playing on a defensive line in Tenn with better studs than he is, in his one good full season. He turned that into a relatively big contract from Mike Brown who doesn’t know shit about football and probably mistook him for a backup tight end.

So is it a fake injury and he knew the suspension was coming?
Or did the league just figure since he’s injured we’ll do the suspension now so no one will notice or cause a fuss?
Odom last year
Remember when he supposedly put on 40 lbs muscle last off season?? Anyone else suspicious about that at the time??

This whole thing brings to mind...
How many players leave the Bengals and can’t even catch on with another NFL team. Other than Corey Dillon, I can’t think of another player in recent history who has went to another team and become anything special. Justin Smith, maybe, sort of? The UFL is littered with former Bengals. Are we becoming the Raiders of the mid-west? Or were we there first?
It ain't easy being greasy...
