Ask The Phinsider

Greetings Bengals fans,

As your game notes say, this is our attempt at 4-0 on the road this season, an impressive feat. I can honestly say I'm glad we're away from home for this game. I feel we have a better chance this way.

Either way, we expect you to field a strong team this weekend, and I don't expect either side to win handily. Good luck to both teams.

However, and I apologize for "breaking tradition," but I have a question for you guys to open things up: What's up with Joseph, what kind of injury is he dealing with, and how is he looking with regard to chances of playing this weekend?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors.

Joseph's been battling injury all season at the moment.

I think he got injured sometime in the Baltimore game with cramps, then came out, missed I think the Carolina game, came back for the Tampa Bay and then suddenly reinjured himself over the course of the bye week. He should be good to go this weekend and I hope he stays healthy, we’ve really been needing him.

You beat a struggling Minnesota team, an injured Packers team, and the Bills (this is self-explanatory), while getting blown out by the Patriots and beaten in a close game by the Jets (we won’t talk about your last “loss”). How confident are you in your team’s ability to go to the playoffs, especially considering the Jets and the Patriots have only lost one game thus far.

by Doc Scratch on Oct 27, 2010 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

I'm actually fairly confident

that we will at least be in the thick of things up until Week 17. I don’t think we’ll ever control our own destiny, but we still have three more matchups against the AFC East; all three of which could yield wins. Once against Buffalo, and once each against New England/New York (on the road for both). Generally, the AFC East (less the Bills) split the games to the tune of 4-2. I don’t see us going any worse than 3-3, and we still have a lot of football to be played against the AFC to improve our positioning.

I don’t think anything should be taken away from our wins or losses; Minnesota, for the struggling they’ve endured, still has one of the top defenses in the league. Green Bay still has Rodgers, Jennings, Driver, and a semi-competent ground game. Even without Matthews, they’re still not a pushover defense either. Bills, yeah. But still, they almost beat the team from Baltimore who shall remain nameless and were dominating them at one point. We lost while driving on the Jets, and lost a game to Pittsburgh that was more than winnable. We’ve held our own all season, and save for the New England game, had every opportunity to be 5-1 at this point.

We’re going to have to beat the tough teams when we play them (Titans, Ravens, you guys, etc.), but I’m optimistic about our odds considering the rest of our schedule (Raiders, Browns, Lions, etc.)

Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!

Don't think they're a pushover at all

but if you ask me if I’d rather play the Ravens or Titans than the Lions.. I’d say, hell no.

I actually like the Lions a lot. Just not their year, and we should be beating better teams than us.

game plan for winning

when i look at miami, i see a team that on paper, wants to do the same things cincy plans to do each week. rely on the run, throw as needed to open the pass, control the clock, let the defense keep the game tempo.

for miami to win, they need to run, run often. only throw when absolutely necessary to open the run.

my question is: do you think chad henne will throw for over 200 yards vs cincy’s defense?

by palewook on Oct 27, 2010 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

I guess that depends.

If Jonathon Joseph is out, I think we may attempt to attack your secondary. If he plays and looks healthy, I still think Henne’s got a good chance to reach 200+.

Thing is, Palmer’s playing well, as are TO and Chad. Benson is underwhelming (unfortunate, I have him in a keeper league), but that seems to be partly attributable to your line’s struggles as well as the situations you’ve been put in from a scoring perspective.

Honestly, after Henne put up somewhere in the range of 240 against Pittsburgh while behind by no less than a score or two all game, I can’t see Henne missing out on the 200 mark (no disrespect intended). That is, unless, somehow we can open up the game with our special teams (doubt it) or running game (possible, but also doubt it).

We like to think of ourselves as a power running football team, but our ability to run block has greatly diminished, and our quality of running backs has also declined with it. I truly believe we’re transitioning (whether Sparano likes it or not) into a team that sets up the run via the pass. We’ve got the weapons to do so, and our line is pass-protecting like each game was our last.

Oh, sorry

my point was that if your offense can hang with our defense (which I don’t see why they couldn’t; TO seems to terrorize us), and even out-perform us, then yes, Henne will definitely exceed 200 yards passing and may even dabble with the 300-range depending on how many points we need to make up.

after looking at the updated injury report

if henne doesn’t throw for 350-450 yards, something is wrong with him. we’re going to be running the 4th-6th cb/ss in most packages.

ouch

Actually, and some of my fellow phins fans will undoubtedly disagree with me, I am not sure if it will make that big of a difference. We just don’t do big passing plays. We may have a few 19 yd passes, but that is it (a rare deep pass here and there… we have only completed 3 passes thrown for 21+ on the year). Henne has a clock in his head that goes about 2.5 seconds and then throws. Not sure if that is him being automatic (he is called the robot for a reason both good and bad) or if it has been coached into him I am not saying he is bad at getting those quick check downs or the ball in the middle of the field. He can move the chains with his arm, but he hasn’t shown much of a quick strike game.

With the current state of your injured D as you describe it, I hope that they let the shackles loose for henne and see if he can build some confidence. If he can’t, than I would have to agree that there may be something wrong.

I was wondering about the best way to educate a young QB

obviously the best way to educate anyone is to take his own learning style and talents and work with them. Now I believe his problem last season was that he held the ball two long and didn’t always make the best decisions. He also seems to be a slow but steady learner. I wonder if they thought that the best way to teach him is to beat the quick clock into him and let him learn all he can about reading the D with that clock in his head (which is slow work) and then ease up and let him see if and when he has more time. The end result is a solid safe QB who does know how to read and take risks when necessary. If this coaching staff sticks around for a while and I am right, it may actually be brilliant.

I know I am talking out of my ass, but it is possible (the educational goal, not “rectal locution”)

Understood.

Great question. Let me preface by stating that Sparano is a lines coach by nature, and sometimes, we wish he’d stay there. I’m not necessarily one of those people yet, but I do find myself with valid questions sometimes. Parcells, Ireland, and TS made it a point to go out and fortify our lines before anything else. It shows, most of the time.

O-Line:

LT: Jake Long. All-World. #1 in the league. Excuse my cockiness, I don’t mean to brag or be presumptuous. The dude is just dominant though. First overall before the 2008 season, and has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons. He performed an encore by shutting out Jared Allen (save for a stupid mistake by Henne to step up into Allen while Long had him under wraps). He stopped Jason Taylor and co., and then assisted in quieting James Harrison against the Steelers. Dude is money, there’s nobody he can’t stifle. Who will you throw against him?

LG: Richie Incognito. Guy can lift over 500 pounds, so he’s a strong dude. He has somehow managed his anger to the point where even during the Steelers game, he didn’t take a single personal foul (hasn’t all season, either; knock on wood). Instead, he’s just pass-blocking like a champ. He can’t pull all that well, but he’s learning. Perhaps slightly above average in run-blocking. I prefer running to this side of the line, as that’s where R&R get their best YPC.

C: Joe Berger. I wish we had a healthy Jake Grove back. That’s all I really need to say. Solid job pass-blocking, mediocre-to-poor in the run game. Not holding up all that well against the top nose tackles, but holding his own on occasion. Just still not JG.

Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!

by Dave.Phuller on Oct 27, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

My bad, cont'd.

RG: Pat McQuistan. This could be John Jerry, but it appears Sparano’s allowing the former Cowboy PMQ to stay in there to aid in the continuity/chemistry thing. I know little-to-nothing about the guy, other than his run blocking is nothing to write home about, and he’s holding his own on pass-blocking most of the time. John Jerry was our rookie starter who contracted an illness that kept him out a few games; he was really starting to come into his own, and will be an absolute mauler when he gains some experience.

RT: Vernon Carey. I believe he’s been to the Pro Bowl, but his play is off-and-on. One play, he can dominate anybody on his side in either the pass or the run. The next, he just takes it off and allows somebody to come running up the middle (see: Jason Worrilds, I think it was). Depends on which Carey shows up. He can be a force on the offensive side if he wants to. If he shows up, there won’t be much your line can do vs. this line. We probably won’t gash your defense on the ground, but I don’t see more than a sack or two tops (depending on your ability to draw coverage sacks).

D-Line:

LDE: Kendall Langford. Great player, probably one of the most underrated 3-4 DEs in the league. Nobody’s heard of him, it seems, but he is a terror in run defense and can tie up at least one man to allow the ’backers to get a shot at the QB.

NT: Paul Soliai. This was Randy Starks in a Jay Ratliff role after we drafted Jared Odrick, but Odrick has since fractured and then subsequently broken his leg (not deemed to be connected, thankfully), so Starks shifts back to his natural RDE position. Soliai was always a disappointment. He would show flashes in practice, then do nothing in the games. Work ethic was poor, and he was (and may still be) out of shape. Still, he’s worked harder and has started to show something this season. He certainly won’t dominate a strong center, but can make an impact on smaller, weaker, or poorer ones.

RDE: Randy Starks. He may have made the Pro Bowl last season, I honestly can’t remember. If he didn’t, he should have. The guy was a beast of a find. He’s getting back to his 2009 ways of giving lines, backs, and QBs fits. He’s just an all-around excellent 3-4 DE. Not much else to say.

I can highlight our LB play if you’d like, but I think that answers your question for now. The defensive unit, with a top-notch NT, would easily be a top-five or top-three unity. Easily. As of now, I think I’d still give it top-10, considering our depth and ability to rotate solid contributors. Not to mention, Cam Wake, our WLB, often puts his hand in the dirt and just kills it. He’s a name you will likely hear often on Sunday. You’ve been warned, haha. He’s not a household name yet, but at this pace, he will be. He’s very similar in playing style to Elvis Dumervil, with some actual run-defense and pass-coverage abilities. No, not strong at either area, but they complement his ability to get to the quarterback.

appreciate it

that was a great breakdown. Unfortunately what you shared w/us doesn’t sound good for us. Our D-line currently has 6 sacks through 6 games and isn’t getting near enough pressure on opposing QB’s. Our Run D used to be a strength but this year has been anything but. We rely heavily on our secondary to make plays, but as most would agree, that isn’t nearly as easy when your D-line can’t get pressures/sacks….the fact that you say your a much better pass blocking team than run blocking seems to play both to your strength and our current weakness.

D-Line doesn’t worry me as much, as it seems our O-line is starting to pass block better than they have up to this point in the season. Andre Smith got his 1st start and played his 1st game w/out splitting time at RT, so thats a definate matchup for you to key in on. As far as LT, good luck, Whitworth IMO is one of the most underrated LT’s in the game. he gave up 1.5 sacks last year, and his only one this year (i believe only 1) was last week on the last drive… you’ll be able to get much more pressure up the middle, which has me feeling atleast semi-positive since it seems you think that the Phins lack a dominate NT, and the opinions on Kyle Cook are differing, but IMO he is a very solid Center and definately strong for his size. Should be interesting come sunday, best of luck with the rest of your season (minus sunday) and thanks again for that thorough breakdown! WHO-DEY!

One thing to add which may make a difference in assessing pass protection

We keep a back or TE in a lot. Often see max protect on pass plays.

here's one for us

you’ll see us using a TE or in goaline sets we use Domata Peko as a fullback b/c our FO is too imcompetent to scout one in the offseason nad too stubborn to sign one currently
(even though our FB crown jewel Chris Pressley was just released from TB- they scooped him off our PS last year).

So expect some randomness in our backfield, and way less Bernard Scott touches than he should get….

in reality we don’t use nearly enough play action, in particular we don’t use it like you mentioned above, which is a travesty. There is not a LB in the league who can hang w/Gresham’s size, strength, and athleticism but sadly we aren’t going to him as much as we should be. either way, keep an eye on him and Shipley this week- expect more big 3rd down conversions from Shipley.

I live in NYC and took my toddler to buy a toy

I saw a very disturbing thing. They were selling NFL action figures. They had Eli Manning which makes sense as it is New York and he did win a superbowl not too long ago. They had Tony Romo, ok, america’s team fine. They had some other nice players.

Then I saw they had Ben Roethelsberger. I exclaimed “seriously?! In a toy store for kids?!” I know there is that innocent until proven guilty thing, but draw a line somewhere. Don’t sell his likeness to kids.

How has your secondary been looking early on?

Do you think they can cover TO, Ocho and Shipley, with all of them coming off a hot week?

Also, is your main weakness on defense the run or pass? Naturally, our boneheaded OC will do the opposite.

by sexsalad on Oct 27, 2010 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

I would say our main weakness is pass defense.

TO has terrorized us in the past, and I’m not fond of how hot he is right now.

The thing with our pass defense is, we’re very young and mostly inexperienced. Jason Allen was a former first round pick who we deemed a bust until the Mike Nolan signing allowed him to just be aggressive and not think (which was his problem; he’s just not a thinker). We also switched him back and forth between S and CB too many times, stunted his development. He now seems to be in a nice fit, having intercepted enough passes to be in the top five or so in the league. He’s not the fastest player, and he is pretty athletic. I’d say we cover TO with him, and I’m hot and cold on that matchup. I think he’ll allow TO to have a pretty decent day, but may pick Palmer off in the process.

Vontae Davis is our version of a Brandon Flowers-type. Young cover corner who can nearly eliminate a wideout but isn’t very well-known yet and has plenty of room for development to become a true shutdown. He’s very physical, and whoever he’s stuck on will become the least of my worries. I’m going to assume he takes Ochocinco, because Chad’s the faster deep threat, no? VD’s specialty with his physical play.

I’ll venture to guess Benny Sapp will be on Shipley, which, I am going to call neutral. Sapp is a vet, and his best position is the nickel CB covering the slot. Given that Shipley is a rookie, I can’t give him the edge. Once he gets some experience, I might. I like JS a lot as a future slot machine.

Our safeties are hit-or-miss. Chris Clemons is a second year FS in his first year as a starter. He makes mistakes every now and again, but overall, he’s actually playing pretty well. Forced a fumble or two last weekend, tackled nine guys (tackling was one of his biggest question marks). I think he had some tackles for a loss.. the guy was a steal in the fifth round, it looks like. He can still be taken advantage of, though. I do like him going forward.

Yeremiah Bell, I don’t understand. Took years to develop, for whatever reason. He’s 31, 32 at this point, but he’s finally tapped into his potential and was a Pro Bowl selection as of last season. This year, he’s not playing the same way. He’s not as physical, he’s missing tackles, making mental mistakes. He’s got the talent, but for some reason, he’s not all there. I’m willing to guess that it is due to his age and diminishing athleticism, but given how deceptively fast he can be, I don’t know that that’s fair.

Sean Smith was our starter last year, starting all 16 games as a rookie CB. This year, he seems to have lost his confidence, and has been relegated to covering the TE for the most part. He’s 6’3" or so, safety size. He’ll most likely be on Gresham, but Gresham appears to be a strong, athletic guy. He could abuse Smith if Palmer looks for him and has time.

I like our chances defending Cedric to be honest. However, we’re not exactly being torched in the secondary, and have a strong pass rush. I’ve seen a lot more times where opposing QBs might have minutes in the pocket but just can’t find an open man than I did last season. It’s definitely not cake to pass on us. 217 yards per game passing, just 5 less than you guys. So your OC has his work cut out. I would suggest you guys set up the run via the pass, but your OC sounds like ours; we’ll complete five straight passes, driving down the field, and we hit the red zone when Henning decides to call two straight runs against the top run defense, followed by a failed short pass.

Just doesn’t make sense.

Benny Sapp was a Vikes player, right?

Involved with the Camarillo trade?

Sounds like you’ve got a lack of experience which Carson should be able to exploit if he runs the no-huddle the entire game.

Yeah the fins struggle alot against the

“no huddle”. Hopefully our defense can step up this week against it

It looks like Smith will start or at least split snaps at #2 CB with Allen

According to local news media that is. Not sure about it. Smith, when he hs played well llast season probably made fewer mistakes than Allen, but also made no big plays. Then again, I don’t get to watch the players as closely as the coaches do.

"The first thing I do when I get out of bed and feel the jolt in my knees is think of Roy Winston. On the second step, my calcified Adam's apple starts bobbing, and I think of Carl Eller. A few more steps in the dark and it's Willie Lanier. By the time I get to the bathroom, I'm flashing back to Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke. And when the light finally comes on, I just hope that somewhere in the darkness they're thinking of me, too" - Larry Csonka.

stop being so inconvenient durnit. >:v

Topic posted, which you guys seem to have taken to almost immediately. I’ll post what I can but I’m not as much of an “expert” as the guys around me.

You know as much as any of us mere peasants.

Josh probably trumps all of us because he’s an insider of sorts, but you’ve got plenty of Bengals knowledge to be answering questions.

I’d head over but I’m not sure it’s worth it at this point, considering I would have to wait a day.

We're extremely receptive to outsiders who don't reside in the AFC East

and love “Ask the/Get to know the” posts.

Doesn’t particularly matter when they get put up, we love ’em just the same.

Jake Long is their son.

I have a ronnie brown question

If ronnie brown was running from dexter manley and was caught with a horse collar tackle, why would it do no good to throw the book at manley?

Hey, Bratkowski... wtf do you do all week?
It takes you 15 seconds to pick your next play, giving no time for reading defense and changing audibles.
No wonder the no-huddle works.
