Ranking The Cincinnati Bengals 2008 Draft Class

Big Cat Country asks the Jacksonville Jaguars if their 2008 NFL Draft was the worst in franchise history. In their class of five players, none are starters and four have already left the team.

Naturally, I wanted to reflect on our draft class, which was slightly better. However, the team only picked up one starter from the draft, finding some depth on both lines, a disappointing second-round wide receiver and three guys that are out of the NFL entirely.

Draft Pick
Keith Rivers Started all 25 NFL games he's played. Finished with three 11-tackle performances during his rookie year before an injury against Pittsburgh knocked him out for the season. Finished second on the team with 101 tackles in 2009.
Jerome Simpson Has only played 10 of a possible 38 games. Last (and only) reception happened on October 19, 2008. Often listed as inactive on gameday.
Pat Sims Recorded at least 30 tackles and half a sack during each of his first two seasons. Started 14 of 31 games played.
Andre Caldwell Played every game in 2009, finished second on the team with 51 receptions. Also recorded two game-winning touchdowns against the Steelers and Ravens. Has played 28 games with 71 career receptions.
Anthony Collins Replacement for injured Levi Jones, starting the final six games in 2008, apart of an offensive line that helped the rushing offense pick up 191 yards rushing against Cleveland and 204 yards rushing against Kansas City. Started seven games in 2009. A typical inactive during game day in 2010.
Jason Shirley Played three games in 2008, recording four tackles on the defensive line. Switched early during the 2009 training camp to offensive line before spending the entire season on the practice squad. Placed on non-football injured reserve and out for the year.
Corey Lynch Played seven games with the Bengals his rookie season, recording an interception against Brett Favre. Signed off the Bengals practice squad in September of 2009 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, playing 19 games and recording eight tackles.
Matt Sherry Placed on Injured Reserve during his first two seasons with the Bengals.
Angelo Craig Waived by the Bengals after the preseason in 2008. Spent time on the Panthers and Patriots practice squads.
Mario Urrutia Signed to the team's practice squad during his rookie season, released during the 2009 offseason.

I’d say it is a plus that every pick from the top 4 rounds is on the team however this class really lacks impact and Jerome Simpson definitely tarnishes their overall grade.

Another in a long line of mostly lame Bengals drafts. Could’ve been worse, apparently marvin was enamoured with Derrick Harvey. So much so that the Jags traded up to get in front of the Bengals to take him. Not suprisingly, he’s been a colossal bust and is on the verge of being cut.

When you back and look at the drafts from the Marv era, I really dont get why so many people think he’d be a great GM

I agree

I’m completely with you. Aside from MB and his blunders, I don’t think Marvin is the greatest talent evaluator.

That's because he isn't a talent evaluator

He’s the head coach, and doesn’t have loads of time to spend on scouting. Since this team doesn’t have a GM, I think it’s safe to say that Marvin is the best we’ve got. This isn’t to say that he’d be the best option for a GM, just that he hasn’t done that badly considering that we don’t have one.

This is our year!

keep in mind

we don’t know who has final say on draft day, but i’d bet a wooden nickel it’s MB not Marvin….
Everyone remembers last years Hard Knocks episode where MB basically shoots down the coaching staff about TE’s and says let’s convert that DE to a TE, he sure can run

Harvey

They traded almost all of their picks for him. At least we don’t make mistakes that bad.

My grades are about a C- draft, the Simpson pick killed us.

1. Keith Rivers— C+ Mayo went behind him and made a pro bowl, still waiting for Rivers to explode.
2. Jerome Simpson— F Desean Jackson anyone?
3a. Pat Sims—B Good solid player
3b. Andre Caldwell— C Made some great plays- TD’s to win games, made bad plays to lose them fumble against Oakland comes to mind.
4. Anthony Collins— B Servicable back up, and I still don’t know why he isn’t ahead of Roland
5. Jason Shirley— D Switched to guard, should have never been picked
6a. Corey Lynch— D Another Ethan Kilmer, avg on special teams
6b. Matt Sherry— F Never played, waste of a pick
7a. Angelo Craig— F Please stop drafting bearcats
7b. Mario Urrutia— F Never panned out as a big wr

Rivers was a wasted pick

I have been screaming for years they should have taken Mayo. Its a simple fact that most of us can scout just by watching college football and this dude was a beast at Tenn. Simpson clearly shouldnt be here, they should have drafted Jackson. Caldwell will be gone next year. Sims barely plays and Collins is always inactive even though he is better then who we have playing at LG right now. They should move collins there and let him play. C – is generous. I would give them a D-. Overall this entire class contributes nothing.

Rivers was a bad pick..

Top 10 picks should be impact players. Keith RIvers most memorable play was getting his jaw broken by Hines Ward. He might show up on the stat sheet but he’s largely a non-factor. He’s a slight step up from Landon Johnson (another guy who made alot of tackles but never seemed to make an impact on the field). On 2nd thought, I’m giving this draft an F. Jerome Simpson in the 2nd?? Just awful.

Desean Jackson

I don’t think Desean Jackson would have been as good as he is in Philly if the Bengals drafted him. Carson Palmer, according to Laverneus Coles, doesn’t like small receivers. So, I think DJax should be thanking his lucky stars.

Another note

Our receivers and their play and ability went downhill after Hugh Jackson left. I think he was a good coach, good talent evaluator, and had the respect of players.

I was really hoping that Hue Jackson would be the OC this year..

instead, they kept Brat and Jackson went to Oakland. 7 weeks in the Cinci offense doesnt have an indentity. Let’s just hope to God that this is Brat’s last year.

by Crew Jones on Oct 28, 2010 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand it

but it still amazes me that we can relate almost everything negative with Bengals to Brat. Let’s play 7 degrees of separation to Bob Bratkowski.

What about Shipley?

and who cares about what Coles has to say? Maybe he is possibly making excuses for himself?

If they didn't really want to pick...

They could have at least traded some of those picks for a descent free agent.

No kidding. You would think that if one wasn’t the best at drafting, one would want to trade those picks for a player(s) to get more value than drafting a bust/underachiever.

by DonMegga on Oct 29, 2010 3:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Nahh, we like to waste our money too much...

Draft busts are what we do best! Mike Brown says; you know what? I am going to make sure that this team is as incompetent, mismanaged, and unprepared as possible, and I am going to be the absolute best at doing it! Anything worth doing is worth doing right!
