The 10 least talked about stories of the first quarter of 2010
Carson Palmer's production is so erratic Vegas won't take bets on him anymore. Dennis Roland looks like a revolving door at Disney Land. Bob Bratowski's creativity resembles that of a 54 year old cardboard factory executive. Bla Bla Bla - we've heard it all before. and while these are all stories that merit our attention, I thought that there were some other ones that aren't being told so far this year. Here are 10 stories that have yet to make it to the presses.
# 1 Where's Odom? - Antwan Odom couldn't be harder to find on the football field if he put on a red and white striped sweater and stocking cap. 0 QB hits in 4 games is unacceptable from our starting DE.
#2 How about that 2nd Round Draft Pick? Speaking of unproductive DEs....If Carlos Dunlap isn't good enough to merit being activated on game day (when our starter has yet to record a QB hit) was our 2nd round pick justified?
#3 Who's the best back in Cincy? After a slow start for Benson, there have been some rumblings about whether or not Scott should get more carries. Though it would be hard to make the case that Scott is the better back of the two, it's still been a disappointment that Scott hasn't been more involved in the offense.
#4 Is Leon Hall a top 5 corner in the league? For those of you who missed it, there was a healthy, albeit endless, debate this offseason about whether or not Leon Hall was a top 5 corner in the league. Well he looks like it so far, so to all the doubters I say "suck it."
#5 What about Reggie? Remember that guy that we traded for who was a former 1st round draft pick and was supposed to be a pretty good cover safety? And remember how we traded a pretty decent corner who has made some big plays in Jacksonville? Yeah, neither do I.
#6 What about Reginald? My theory is that he was made fun of incessantly as a kid for his name and so he became large and angry as a defense mechanism. Seriously though, how long can this team put up with sloppy play at Center?
#7 Is Jerome Simpson ready for a breakout year? If you took that question seriously, please punch yourself in the nuts. C'mon coaches, if he can't make the field in year 3, then we need to stop wasting a roster spot on him. He is no longer worthy of being called a bust - he was a bust the last two years - he is now simply a waste of space.
#8 Is Caldwell our other 2008 WR draft bust? Shipley is manhandling Caldwell in production this year, which begs the question, what's going to happen to Caldwell? Assuming Shipley's head is still on his shoulders after the infamous cheap shot, he's got a great shot at pushing Caldwell out of a job.
#9 Who has QB LeFevour? - We went ahead and got a 3rd string backup QB after dumping our 2nd string QB, while promoting the former 3rd string to 2nd string. Ever since then I haven't heard one report about whether or not our 3rd string has any potential to be a 2nd string. If you don't know who I'm talking about, it's because nobody has talked about him yet....
#10 - How good is Crocker? The more I watch this guy play, the more I love him. He hits hard, covers well, and makes a great pan of brownies...Or maybe I'm getting him confused with Betty. Regardless, they are delicious brownies.

1&2 – One of the ends needs to step up. Someone, please. I can’t wait for Fanene to get back because I think he is the best DE right now. I was so excited to see MJ at OLB, I wanted to see him putting up Clay Matthews numbers. Now I think he needs to be in there at DE. Without effective ends, there is no pass rush.
3 – It’s Benson, make no mistake. But the question is, why aren’t we seeing all three used? I do think they need to maintain a commitment to the run, but they need to add new looks. Leonard was meant to be a catching threat, use him on more than third down. Why doesn’t Scott line up in the slot? You could even make an argument for some Wildcat/Option formations with the three backs the Bengals have. But no, Benson runs into the offensive line and then they try it with Scott on third down.
4 – Oh most definitely. Leon Hall is an animal and isn’t getting nearly enough credit for what he’s doing. I think he’s making a statement to the FO, and the NFL. If the Bengals only choose to keep one superstar QB, who would you want right now?
5 – I believe he is playing on special teams, correct me if I’m wrong. I think they are working on getting him aggressive and teaching him how to tackle in the NFL. If you watch the videos of him embarrassing himself, it’s always because he plays like it’s still college ball. He is in the right place a the right time, he makes the contact, he just doesn’t have the technique. I think they’ll let him off the leash when they feel he is ready.
6 – I think the jury is still out on Cook. The argument can be made that he is making mistakes because he is having to compensate for sloppy guard play on both sides. He is an adequate center in the AFC North and that’s an excellent center in moth other divisions. I think they need to try to get Reggie some snaps at guard. If he shines maybe he can elevate Cook’s play. Make him earn his paycheck. Cycle him in and out at right and left guard. Even if it’s just to give the obviously struggling starters a rest from time to time.
7/8 – Simpson should be gone. You see the Colts pull a guy off the practice squad (Blair White, if you are in a deep league he’s a good fantasy pickup) and he produces, Simpson can’t even touch the ball after 2 years on the 53. Caldwell filled in nicely for Shipley when he left Sunday. But I don’t think Carson trusts him nearly as much, and rightfully so. I’d call him a pretty damn good #4, not really a bust out of the third round. But it does make you appreciate how lucky we are that 31 other teams passed on Shipley for at least 2 rounds.
9 – I think future #2 is the most LeFevour will ever be, but I think he has the potential to be a great one. And what is with the Bengals picking up Martz QBs (even if it was just one preseason in LeFevour’s case)? I think his fate rests in whether or not the Bengals draft a QB in 2011.
10 – I got in an argument with someone in the post game thread about how good Crocker is. I think he is a big part of Zimmer’s defense and I think he plays his role well. No, he’s not the most gifted athletically but I think he’s committed to the scheme. I think Crocker/Ndukwe is a pretty damn good combo, but I still want to see the Bengals take a safety off the board early in this upcoming draft. Preferably of the coverage variety.
Great post. There’s so many things I mean to talk about but never get the chance. These are all things that deserve week to week observation.
You are right on 5
I saw him in on a tackle Sunday, and get into a tussle against the Panthers. He is probably taking some time to learn the D.

- He is still better than Guichic, who was here for 3 years. I am hoping he comes around.
- It will take him some time to learn the offense.

He's had time.
Cook sucks. He’s been on the team for over two seasons now, and he’s started 21 games. Time’s up.
It's time to sink or Zim.

Obviously you don’t recall just how bad Ghiaciuc was.

I voted other
Special teams doesn’t get a lot of talk usualy (unless Brad St. Louis is the long snapper) and this time around I’ve got two possitive to talk about and two negatives.
Positives-field goal kicking is consistent and punting is above avg. to very good
Negative-Kick off and punt return coverage not terrible but not as good as last year (missing Hebert?)
Kick off and punt returns much worse than last year although not terrible.
Seriously?
Crocker got burned by the Browns on several occasions. The Browns. And he didn’t really help out much in the run game. He’s really not that good. He makes big hits because he plays with intensity, but I credit Zim for that. Crocker is not talented enough to be a starting NFL FS.

I love Crocker..
But I agree here. He couldn’t cover my grandma last week..

I actually missed the game last week
But what I’ve seen so far this year tells me he is still our best coverage safety – of course, that’s not really saying much. Let’s see how Reggie Nelson progresses.
This is our year!
I like the fire I see from Reggie Nelson on ST.. He’s got some anger behind those pads. I hope he gets his brain around our defense in a hurry.

1. I think we have to realize that Geathers and Odom are playing more as containment DEs than rushing DEs – which doesn’t necessarily mean they are failing, but aren’t getting the sack numbers we love to see. We could put in MJ, but then I think he’d struggle against the run. I’m wondering if we could possibly utilize Atkins as a strong side DE when MJ is in on the weak side. It would be sort of a make-shift 3-4. But as they say, if it aint broke, don’t fix it…
5. I think after the bye week, we’ll see more of Reggie Nelson. Remember, he’s still new to Zimmer’s defense, which focuses heavily on being in the right place and in position.
6. I haven’t given up on Cook. Remember, he has gone up against some tough NT’s this year in Wilfork, Ngata, and Rogers. And I agree he is possibly overcompensating for a superannuated Williams and inexperienced Livings.
7. Please get rid of Simpson. He has been wasting a roster spot for 3 years now. I’m hoping we can hold onto TO for one more year so we can draft maybe one more tall/lengthy reciever to come in and replace him in 2012.
10. Crocker to me seems more like a strong safety and has been a bit of a liability on coverage. I’m hoping Nelson will be able to replace him soon.

The only reason I can come up with for why we are keeping Simpson
Is in case Chad goes down with an injury, he’s our best replacement. But….since he doesn’t seem to be able to play ANY other position, I just think he’s been taking up space that could be used for guys like Herbert, who at least was a special team monster.
As for Nelson, I know he was playing inured at the end of last year, but he looked like a HORRIBLE tackler. I don’t see him replacing Crocker anytime soon.
This is our year!
+1 on Nelson being a bad tackler.
It sure is hard to tackle whilst getting trucked, cleated, then run over..

That happened to Roy on Sunday, too
So let’s just use someone who’s decent in coverage and leave the tackling to the adults out there.

I'm almost wondering if maybe Pacman
should be incorporated as a safety. With him, Roy, JJ, and Hall, you’d have your best 4 DBs on the field. And Pacman can tackle.

I thought that at first
but Crocker is 5-11/200 compared to Pacman at 5-10/190 – not a huge difference. And we don’t need him back there to be a run-stuffer. Besides, we often have Pacman with Hall & JJo on the field together anyways. I just think pacman would be much better at helping out in coverage which is where Crocker is struggling.

if anything Leon Hall would be abetter safety
Pacman isnt 190. I know what hes listed as. but hes more like 5’8" 180 lbs

I don’t understand the comparisons of Simpson to Chad. Henny Youngman might have been a good WR to take Chad’s place, but we’ll never know because he doesn’t play football. The same can be said for Simpson. 3rd season, 10 games played, 1 catch for 2 yards. How in the hell does he still have a job?
by indesignkat on Oct 11, 2010 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions
“aren’t getting the sack numbers we love to see”???
The entire defense only had 3 sacks in the first 4 games. They doubled their total today, but 6 sacks in 5 games still is pretty crappy.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it..”
I was going to argue that point, looking at the points they’ve given up, but many of those points were set up or outright gifted to the other team by the Bengals offense, and no defense can look good when the offense is playing like they would prefer a nice seat on the bench to a super bowl ring, so I’ll just leave it at “More sacks!!!!”

That was not advice meant to be taken literally. Though I admire your dedication and commitment to the team.

Bratkowski HAS GOT TO GO!!!!! Seriously, dude must have naked pix of Katie and a donkey or something! In any other team in ANY league, the douchebag would’a been shown the door YEARS ago! Words cannot accurately describe how bad I hate Bratkowski!

You see the Dolphins special teams coach get fired after one terrible game. You see the Mets fire their manager for not making the post season. You see the 49ers OC get fired when the media heat was on him/Singletary. Brat has had miserable games, he’s failed to reach the post season year after year, and Cincinnati media and the fans in general have been critical of him for years. Yet he’s still here.

1) who? oh yeah. time to get some fresh blood in there. odom hasn’t earned the starts this year.
2) see 1.
3) o-line issues. off cord issues. not all benson’s fault.
4) hall or jo-jo. hall or jo-jo. :sniff: bye jo-jo.
5) nelson is a project. he’ll get in there as he earns his way into the lineup. if it don’t happen, it don’t.
6) jury is still out on cook. he appears to be trying to do too much and its making his play suffer.
7) flush simpson. time to move on. hey sign briscoe and flip the bucks off and pick his brain. wait we should have done that this week already.
8) caldwell has ability. he’ll never be a number 1. will work out fine in cincy as our 3rd-4th wr.
9) he’s not the answer. just a temporary name in town.
10) he’s physical but not a cover guy. sounds like most of our safeties.

Nobody is debating at this point
And people were sick of the debate before it ended last time. :) So I think not.
This is our year!
I know...
lol… I’m sick of it too. But it might be fun to open a thread on Baltimore Beatdown! (jk… sorta)
Seeing as how everybody voted for the disappearance of Odom...
Where the hell has that guy been? During the pre-season he was talking about getting two sacks a game. Maybe he should have started with one!
Reminds me of Reinard Wilson
when he was a rookie and claimed 8 sacks (which was a milestone in his contract for a bonus) would be too easy for him and he’d get at a minimum, 10 sacks….

Every other aspect of the D has been sound
except for the pass rush. Without Fanene in there, and with Odom being innefective, it’s evident that the line needs some help. Either we finally give Dunlap a chance to play, or find a place for MJ on the line on a more permanent basis.
