Ask A Bills Fan
Aloha, Bengals fans. I'm Brian Galliford, and I run Buffalo Rumblings, SB Nation's Bills community. I'm here to answer any questions you have about this weekend's game between my Bills and your Bengals, so if you've got them, fire away. I'm certain some other folks from BR (no, that does NOT stand for Bleacher Report, dammit) will swing by.
BUT. (There's always a but.)
We don't have to talk about the game if you don't want to. I mean, seriously - these teams are a combined 3-15. I'm up for anything that's kosher to the community, but I especially like talking about food, television shows (have you SEEN The Walking Dead?!), and other sports. So we can talk about other things, too, if you can't stomach Bills/Bengals. But mostly, yeah, I'm here to talk Bills/Bengals.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Cincy Jungle's writers or editors.

Fitzy!!!!
can you please provide a re-cap of Ol’ Fitzy and how he’s progressed to (i believe) the top 3rd down % QB and revived your offense. He always looked terrified taking snaps here and was typically running for his life every play. Is it consistency in the system, good QB coach, what? I’m dumfounded to see him having such a good year (statistically)…where are his current strengths and weaknesses etc.
Thank you
It’s definitely not consistency in the system, because he’s been in two different systems – three if you count the team moving from Turk Schonert to Alex Van Pelt last August, and now Chan Gailey – since he’s been here.
We have a QB coach, George Cortez, that I believe is working in the NFL for the first time.
Fitzpatrick is one of the guttiest quarterbacks I’ve ever seen; he sacrifices his body at will, both on scrambles and as a run blocker. Calling him the best run-blocking QB in the NFL doesn’t do it justice; he might be the only QB who actually does it on a routine basis. He’s reading defenses incredibly well, and getting enough protection to make some plays. I couldn’t have predicted this, either – the Fitz you saw in 2008 is the Fitz we saw in 2009 – but he is really playing some outstanding football for us.

I saw him make probably the best QB block I've ever seen
this past sunday in the 1st quarter. Completely took out a linebacker that led to a 1st down on a reverse.
So, is he the real deal? Will he be your long-term QB? I actually was upset he left Cincy. Though many thought he did terrible when he had his shot in 2008, I believe he was the victim of a patchwork offensive line (Willie & Braham had left, Levi was injured, Stacey Andrews sucked and then got injured as well) with sub-par RB (Chris Perry), and depleted recievers (Chris Henry had gotten suspended and Chad Ocho was playing injured and unmotivated that year).
Moisture is the essense of wetness, and wetness is the essense of beauty.
Yeah, that block was pretty nice. The crowd at Ralph Wilson Stadium went bonkers when he did it.
I have no idea if he’s the long-term answer at QB, because while I know Buddy Nix likes him, I don’t know exactly how much he likes him. I know if I had things my way, we’d be taking Luck if he’s there, and Locker if he isn’t.

Tons of ifs there. If we have #1 and Luck declares, he’s a no-brainer. If we have #1 and Luck stays at Stanford OR we have #2 or less, it pretty much becomes Buddy Nix’s BPA. Jake Locker? A.J. Green? Marcell Dareus? Patrick Peterson? Probably one of those four players.

In regards to fans voicing displeasure with ownership
our franchises are in the same boat. We hate Mike Brown and I’m going out on a limb here by saying this but I assume Buffalo fans still hate Nix (for the most part right?) soooooo here’s my question. What types of things has your fan base done and been successful at in regards to getting Nix to listen to the fans and make positive changes? I know you used the billboards recently to voice displeasure, how did it work and have you done anything else to try and FORCE a change in your Owners behavior?
Buffalo fans, by and large, do not hate Buddy Nix. Nor do they hate Ralph Wilson, the team’s owner. Sure, a certain amount of vitriol exists, but they hate his decisions, not the man himself. But Wilson is 92 years old; there’s not much anyone can do to force him to change the way he’s done things for half a century. It’s not precisely the same situation as the Bengals, with Brown.
by Brian Galliford on Nov 17, 2010 11:09 AM EST up reply actions
I apologize, I meant Wilson
not sure where that brain-fart came from and maybe HATE was too strong a word for your fans’ displeasure. What I was trying to get at , is has there been anything that your fans have done/tried that has directly led to a change in behavior by the Bills organization….
Not that I’m aware of. For all of the “hire Bill Cowher or else” billboards we put up, a stupid sign on a freeway isn’t going to affect how an NFL team does business. I’m sure the Bills are well aware of the fact that fans are pissed that we haven’t been to the playoffs for 11 years.

What would you say are the talents of your offense?
Same for your defense?
First thoughts are Fred Jackson and your secondary off the top of my head, want to make sure that’s consistent.
That’s kind of accurate, though Jackson hadn’t been much of a factor before the Lions game. Gailey has done a nice job of game-planning to put up a respectable amount of points per game. I’d say he is our offensive strength.
Defensively, yeah, the secondary is the strong group, though stats don’t tell that story – they have exactly zero interceptions this year. But our best player is DT Kyle Williams. He has been absolutely dominant over the past month.
by Brian Galliford on Nov 17, 2010 11:18 AM EST up reply actions
Huh, that's odd...
Considering your secondary led the NFL in interceptions last year.
Then again, I can’t look at the NFL and think of how things aren’t odd this year.

Walking Dead is amazing!!!
Could also be a clever name for my fav. Football team… But seriously that 2nd episode was unbelievable. I can’t believe AMC Is the only channel that can rival HBO, in regards to original programming. Bengals and Bills fans, heck anyone who likes provocative television should be watching this channel. Breaking Bad is the creme de la creme of writing and acting. I couldn't stand to watch Lost beyond 2 seasons
I got tired of waiting to find out what the hell was going on. I had the feeling the writers were literally writing in random episodes with no end in sight. And did they eventually explain all the mysterious events that kept happening?

I love the Shield
watched the first 6 seasons in about 3 months over two years ago. But then tried to watch season 7 a few months ago and for some reason, it just seemed to suck ass. I couldn’t even get through the second episode. I don’t know if its cause I was confused on what happened in season 6 (since there was about a 2-yr delay between the time I saw 6 and 7), the writing/directing got worse, I just got tired of seeing the same on-going theme of Vic Mackey trying to stay one step ahead of his pursuers while continuing to be corrupt – but “overall good intentions” – or maybe the charecters never seem to change (I think my favorite seasons were with Forest Whitaker and Glen Close because they added something different).
Moisture is the essense of wetness, and wetness is the essense of beauty.
soa is from one of the guys behind the shield
as for favorite season from shield, hard to discount how good whitaker was on season 5. it doesn’t hurt that Gina Torres (firefly) shows up during season 5 as whitakers wife. and gets semi-nude during the shield. just google “Gina Torres shield” if you’ve forgotten the scene.

how are Mad Men and Breadking Bad on AMC? I’ve heard strong raves about them. I just got Netflix, so am about to start watching shows, beginning with the following: 24 season 8, Dexter season 3+, Office season 5+, and Mad Men.
Also, this might sound a little gay, but has anyone watched Vampire Diaries? I’m obviously not a chick, though my gf claims I’ll like this, since I am sort of a fan of vampires and didn’t hate the twilight series.

good thing
cause my sister just started watching it. I started watchin around the last couple of seasons and have been since….. but does anyone know the prices of the other seasons? Have dial up so internet watching is out the window :-(
Heeeeey, Ochocinco, he's a good guy, no?
Well I watched season 1 and season 2 by checking the DVDs out at the local library at first (I later bought them anyway, but at first I wanted to catch up on the cheap). Many of the Ohio libraries will have them and should have season 3 by now. Assuming of course you’re in Ohio, but then other states may have libraries that have them as well.
If not, the DVD sets are about $15-$25 on half.com.
Don't watch The Event
That is all.
I got drawn in by the first 3 episodes, and now I want to know what happens. And I don’t know why, b/c it’s a terrible, terrible show.
How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his children?
ROFL yeah. Well the special effects are decent and the plot isn’t completely unbelievable. But the execution is a bit off and I’m really ready for at least one of the multitude of bad guys to take one in the guts.
I'm slowly beginning to believe that they could run 60 episodes straight,
where the main plot line is: This guy has information, they are so close to getting him, and then some INSANE INEPTNESS on the part of someone causes the information to remain completely concealed. It’s not even just slight, questionable ineptness. The absolute most absurd things have to happen to keep evidence concealed.
Heck, I’ll go one step further on the plot, and even say that it seems like a great plot. But oh jeeze, the execution, man. So bad.
How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his children?
Oh I don’t know. I didn’t see a lot of ineptness on the part of the “good guys”. I saw some luck going in their favor, and a lot of bad luck going against them. And I saw a lot of times when they were out-planned and out-executed by a better prepared enemy more willing to break rules and all. And I can’t believe the blood sample wasn’t guarded. That truly was stupid. But other than that, I didn’t really see much ineptness on their part.
On the part of the multitude of bad guys, harder to say, but even most of them didn’t seem truly inept. Most of them, of course, still leaves some who truly were inept. But not all, nor were there any truly insane levels of it the way I saw it.
I’m just wondering where the FBI chick is. She hasn’t shown up in too long already.
RE:
In its defense though, I think it’s finally starting to pick up. Whether or not we really give a crap about the characters is another matter. You really have no investment on the show. If someone dies, you shrug your shoulders.

3 questions
1. What do you think are the chances that the Bengals and Bills tie, thus leaving no winner for either fan base?
2. What are your feelings about C.J. Spiller so far?
3. Hypothetically, if you could acquire any one Bengal player from the current roster, who would it be? Why?
1) The Bills have been to two overtime games already this season. Nothing is out of the realm of possibility.
2) Non-existent, really, because the Bills aren’t using him enough to generate a concrete opinion. And now he’s hurt.
3) Hmm… I’ll go with Jermaine Gresham, because the Bills haven’t had a legitimate pass-catching TE in years.

New Topic: your favorite cult-flick Movies
Okay, so while we’re digressing from the Bengals (which I’m sure most on this post would agree is not a bad thing), what is your favorite non-blockbuster/independent cult-flick?
I recently watched Big Trouble in Little China – which I haven’t seen in years – and quickly had my passion for that movie rejouvenated. There’s something about that movie that clicks with me – maybe because of the way John Carpenter delicately blends in pretty much every possible theme, including action, humor, martial arts, drama, romance, science fiction & fantasy, suspense, etc. BL, the movie ROCKS.
So, I was wondering what some of your favorite non-mainstream movies are, because I’m in the mood to watch something I’ve never heard of, since those are sometimes the best movies (maybe because they aren’t trumpeted by a ton of advertisements and previews). I’ll give one recommendation (besides Big Trouble in Little China): Henry Poole is Here.
Moisture is the essense of wetness, and wetness is the essense of beauty.
if you're down with kung-fu
try the Ong Bak movies…… not sure if that qualifies for cult classic/non-mainstream but most of my friends had never heard of them
love tony jaa
but ong bak 3 is a mess. stick with 1 & 2

Not huge on kung fu, but do occaionally enjoy watching oriental/MA movies
I recently watched IP Man. Have you seen that? It wasn’t really that bad, but it was interesting because it was a Chinese movie, which ends up ridiculing the Japanese, and justly so.
Moisture is the essense of wetness, and wetness is the essense of beauty.

I liked the first two seasons, but they did it right. Slowly developing the characters and the back story with a good pace. Newer shows don’t do that anymore and you feel less invested or attached to the characters — exception being Lost, which I think was the best show that told a story that I’ve ever seen. If it wasn’t for the first two seasons of Fringe, this season would be either confusing or simply not happen.

The only other comparable guy out there is Josh Whedon, who not only directed Firefly, and Serenity, but also created Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long blog.
This is our year!
Abrams’ latest experiment, The Undercovers, was a rather colossal flop. I believe it’s already been canceled.
But yeah, he’s still awesome.
