well then consider me retired from the NFL too…..i thought you had to be on a team/play for a team to be able to retire???
I think you have to file official paperwork with the league, whether or not you currently play for a team. Not sure, though.
Yeah the retirement process is two-fold.
One part only applies if you are currently under contract with a team: You then tell them you are retiring and they put you on their reserve/retired list (at least for awhile). This is in case you change your mind they still retain your rights. But if don’t then you aren’t wasting a roster spot for them.
The second half can be done by anybody who has played for the league at all. That is to file the official paperwork. Once you do that, you’re “officially” retired and need permission from the commissioner to come back. And at that point you can also start drawing your NFLPA pension.
