Bengals Free Agents

The end of the 2011 NFL season is approaching, and what is starting to concern me is who of the numerous free agents the Bengals will be having do we re-sign? J-Joe, Cedric Benson, Kyle Cook, T.O., Dhani Jones, Reggie Kelly, a club option on Chad, and of course, Marvin Lewis are all in the end of their contracts. These are all key players, so of all the free agents we have, who do you all think we WILL keep and who will we let go?

The first priority is obviously to get Joseph to return.

I hope they’re not stingy with money on him. The defense has been completely different with him on the field and he deserves a nice paycheck for that. RBs like Ced are found all over the place and he causes locker room problems. They should let him walk. I think we might need Cook, considering we probably won’t end up even looking at drafting a Center. TO will want to walk. He’s gone. Dhani can leave or stay, but if he stays he needs to be a backup. I think Kelly might retire. I say pick up Chad’s option because it only costs 2.5 million extra and he’s definitely worth that much.

Benson is done. Most atempts in the NFL 5 fumbles and ...

I can count on my hand the times he got a 1st down and didnt back Carson and crew up when he got the ball on 2nd down. nearly 90 times.

Sign at least 2 out of 6

Here is my priority list (from least) of free agents to re-sign:
Benson, Kelly, Cook, Jones, Owens, Joseph.
Benson and Kelly were disappointments.
Cook and Jones can be retained if cheap. Also a good test if LBs (Maulauga, Rivers, etc.) we have, are good enough if Bengals do not retain Jones.
Without TO and Joseph, where would the Bengals be this year?

I'd still take Joseph regardless.

He’s probably a big reason why we won against the Ravens. T.O. on the other hand, every one of his big games has been a loss, since those two games were both more of Benson running the ball.

I would too,

I was just giving a little sarcasm.

I would bring back three

Jonathan Joseph is the top priority. Imagine how good he would be if the Bengals manage to get a decent pass rush.

Kyle Cook is a good center. He took a step back this year, but I blame the coaches for 80% of that.

Cedric Benson is still a really good running back. He is definitely not where he was at last year, but look at the line he is running behind. They are definitely not giving him any creases to run, and how many times has he had to dodge a defender before he even gets to the line.

Cook is alright, but he's not what I want for the future.

If we had fallen late in the first, I would have wanted to draft Kirkpatrick.

T.O.

is having a great year, a Pro Bowl year, he has obviously shown he can still play. I would be open to bringing him back. What do you guys think?

by STJ32 on Nov 28, 2010 12:15 PM EST reply actions

Not Me

Mainly because, from what i’ve seen at least, T.O. doesn’t mind skateing along on talent. Chad tries on every single pass thrown his way. Plus, if you take T.O. away, Palmer won’t lock on as much, hopefully.

Heeeeey, Ochocinco, he's a good guy, no?

by bill schwab on Nov 30, 2010 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

Joe Joe #1

Jonathan Joseph should be our #1 priority. He is important to our D. Then i say Kyle Cook he is tuff guy and he understands Defenses. After those two i believe everyone else is replacable. I would love for T.O. to come back but with the year he is havin dnt think it will happen cause now we will have to pay him. Miks Brown will never give him what he wants.

+1

I haven’t heard anything, but I think Cook is playing hurt too, so next year, I believe we’ll see the 2009 Cook greatness back next year.

Mike Brown

I just hope he will pay J-Joe what he deserves. He is a very big part of our defense and our secondary would be worse without him. Mike Brown needs to start paying the players we need.

by STJ32 on Nov 28, 2010 12:29 PM EST reply actions

YES!

I might cry if MB won’t give big money to J-Joe. The defense is totally different with him on the field.

Cedric Benson

With Ced being a free agent, do any of you see us retaining him or going out and signing a free agent such as an Ahmad Bradshaw, or DeAngelo Williams?

by STJ32 on Nov 28, 2010 7:44 PM EST reply actions

J Joe #1

Then I’d go after DeAngelo Williams regardless of if he’s out for the year this year.

D Jones – c ya, unless as backup
Benson – if we can’t get Williams…maybe.
Cook, TO, kelly, etc….peace!

by ddbumpus on Nov 28, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

Do you see DeAngelo Williams coming here though?

This is obviously a top ten back here. Better yet, who would you want to pay more, Williams or Jonathan Joseph?

Ahmad Bradshaw is iffy. From what I hear, he is injured pretty easily and has fumbling issues. Not something I’d want to get back, since it might be worse than Benson’s fumble issues.

Then again, I’m not sure what to do with the RB situation. Obviously we’d need a quality talent here (it says a lot when your leading rusher is Aaron Rodgers), but then again, I look at Detroit and see guys like Aaron Berry and Maurice Morris (if you say “Who?” you’re on the right track) and see them doing well while Kevin Smith and Jahvid Best have both struggled. I doubt Morris and Berry are a product of their system if Smith and Best have sucked with the same line while the two of them have done magnificent. It’s like the counter-argument to the “RBs a product of the OLine” point.

I don’t know, I’m confused on this whole thing, but I think, in the end, it’s not worth keeping Ced if he wants a huge contract.

Oh wow, got ahead of myself.

Meant to make a point of how bad Green Bay’s rushing attack has been since Ryan Grant got injured and how that cost them the game against Atlanta today, but completely forgot.

Really? DeAngelo Williams?

Great back, no doubt. But he hasn’t played a full 16-game schedule since 2008 and only twice in his five-year career. Coming into this season, Benson had as many fumbles lost as Williams. If we’re going to suggest a new RB, let’s look for a young guy in the draft. I mean, running back is such a fragile position and Williams will be 28 years old by next year.

agree

We should draft a RB next year if Benson proves too difficult to resign. We have Scott, Leonard and Peerman and can pick the FA wire if need be. There are usually RBs out there.

by goffchile on Nov 29, 2010 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

But

Keeping scott means chaning our running style. He runs competely different than Benson. Benson is patience and power, Scott is speed and slipperyness. So unless we can talk Brat into designing new plays (unlikely) for Scott, instead of making Scott fit his plays, bad things might happen. I’d hate for Scott to be wasted by Bratkowski

Why would any of them want to come back?

We have horrible coaches and an owner who does not care.

by BonnieBengal on Nov 29, 2010 2:22 PM EST reply actions

$$$$

You have to out offer other teams in some of these cases if you want them to comeback. Such as J.Joe.
