NFL Open Thread: Bengals Are Off, But The NFL Keeps On Truckin'

This season has been bad, compared to last year. Last year, I always looked forward to Sundays, watching our boys inch ever so closer to another playoff berth. Waking up early in the morning, no matter how much sleep I got, my mind was racing and my heart pumping. Sundays last year were great.

This year, it's a different story. I still enjoy waking up and watching the Bengals on Sunday. It's great having an NFL team in our city to root for, something many other cities can't, nor ever will, have. Yes, yes. Mike Brown. Losing. It all sucks. But they are our team and loyalty to our team is a virtue that we hold a monopoly on in the NFL. True, Bengals fans have different perspectives and approaches. Yet, at the end of the day, we're simple folk who enjoy our simple little team the best way we can.

On the other hand, to be able to sit back and watch NFL games that I have no emotion investment on, is nice this week. Which games are you looking forward to? Who is your backup team, if you have one?

This is a Sunday open thread for Sunday's slate of NFL games. Chit. And chat. Monitor and update division rivals. Let us know how the best games are going.

I try to root for the Colts, though it just doesn't feel the same

and in terms of other games, I can only really root against teams or occasional for/against certain players. For example, I love to root against the rest of the AFCN (of course), any team from NY, Oakland, and Dallas. Though, now I am slightly conflicted because I always liked Jon Kitna (as a man) so I’ve been trying to root for him to do well in Dallas with Romo out.

I love Kitna.

I met him a few times and he’s the most humble guy you’ll ever meet.

Also, my brother used to work at a Red Robin and he’d come in every once in a while with his kids. He’d leave a $60 tip every time.

I also like Kitna. One reason is he played for the Bengals and another reason is he seems like a nice guy. I kinda like the Cowboys too so go Kitna and the Cowboys!

T'was the only reason my dad was rooting for Dallas on Thursday.

Saw parts of that Bengals replay on NFL Network last night.

Big note: Brat is the replay man. Brat believed that it hit Caldwell in real time. As the play was developing, he was yelling at Caldwell to go pick it up. Did he watch a replay? Who knows, but he believed that it hit him in real time.

As for Caldwell, he tweeted yesterday that it did not hit him.

Loved the part where Chad and TO ripped on Pettrey w/ each other after the miss. Course, that also probably shows the big divide on this team. You got a bunch of groups, rather than a cohesive unit.

How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his children?

Im a die hard Bengals fan. No matter how bad they are doing i still root for them. I dont really have a back up team, but i do like cheering for the Pack.

Schadenfreude

this season, I’m reduced to enjoying the suffering of others – namely Steelers and Ravens fans. I would almost prefer watching a Steelers or Ravens loss than a Bengals win at this point. Living in DC, where Steeler and Raven fans infest the area like herpetic sores on a street prostitute (or Big Ben’s mouth), I don’t think I could take either of those teams winning the Super Bowl.

So, I'm so irrate right now after watching the Bills blow an OT game to Pittsburgh

Fitzpatrick is tearing it up, but unfortunately can’t overcome dropped passes by his guys. I am becoming more and more convinced the most valuable recievers are guys who can simply run correct routes and catch balls.

Moisture is the essense of wetness, and wetness is the essense of beauty.

by Blue Steel on Nov 28, 2010 4:45 PM EST reply actions

W/ hindsight, it's easy to say we highly overrated our receiving core this year.

Look back to the Henry (deep threat), Housh (excellent hands/routes), Ocho (playmaker) trio. Worked amazingly well.
This year: 2 guys that run questionable routes and have questionable hands (TO, Ocho), and two rookies that could become very good at both (Gresham, Shipley) but just aren’t there yet, and a giant turd (Caldwell).

Sure Ocho and TO are great playmakers, and Gresham and Shipley have looked like they are going to be good, productive, NFL players, but where’s the consistency? Having 2 guys that are inconsistent by nature (TO, Ocho) and 2 that are inconsistent by experience (Shipley, Gresham), is probably a pretty good formula for an excessive fail. Turns out, it was.

This takes nothing away however from the inconsistent play of Palmer, the lack of consistency in the running game, and the on again off again play from the O-line.

How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his children?

by Grizzlyfox on Nov 28, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

I'd say it has more to do with the inconsistent o-line play and Palmer's sporadic passing

but, you raise a good point with Chad/TO’s dropped passes & bad route running (though the latter is tough to determine whether it is on them or Palmer). When I look across the league and see less talented recievers succeeding with teams like NE and Indy, it’s obvious they are who really count. Just look at NE letting Randy Moss go in favor of the more dependable no-name recievers. I think we should look to the 4-7 rounds to pick up some more Shipley/Housh type recievers.

Moisture is the essense of wetness, and wetness is the essense of beauty.

by Blue Steel on Nov 28, 2010 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

Keeping on that line of thought,

could it be questioned that some of Palmer’s locking onto guys this season is be b/c our gifted OC has been running designed plays in which 2 guys are decoys who just run way out of the way to take away defenders, a third receiver is a safety valve and the other is the main target? This would I guess sort of make sense, gotta get your playmakers the ball somehow.

Unless if Palmer truly just sucks (which he might) this seems to make some sense, I think.

How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his children?

by Grizzlyfox on Nov 28, 2010 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

I just watch the NFL soundfx replay of the game, aired Saturday night.

They happened to show the play of both Carson picks and the coaches (Brat included) reactions.
The pick that Carson threw into the endzone was a designed play and Gresham was supposed to run a 15 yard out route. But was bumped and ran into by a LB in his route. He was able to get open but it was a designed timing play so Carson didn’t wait to see if Gresham was going to get open. He forced it into the endzone when all he had to do is wait. Brat made it seem that it was Carson’s and Gresham’s fault. Carson’s fault b/c of a bad decision and Gresham’s fault for running into the LB. Brat said " he should have avoided the contact with the LB.
I think that Brat wants these guys to play like robots. With being stuck strictly on timing plays, it will get you the results you have with the above play. If the other team knows what play your running, they are going to try and disrupt the routes like they did with Gresham. The players are thinking way to much on the field and not playing football. They are trying to be too perfect as to the coaches instructions to why they are not playing good football. They are playing roboticball and one inconsistent maneuver that wasn’t practiced, throws the rhythm off. It’s like playing the arcade game “TRON” back in the day.
BTW, they (the coaches) were talking about Chad doing the same thing. Allowing himself to be bumped off of the timing.
I am going to say this again. Most of the best plays that happen are not practiced, they are b/c of talent and just knowing how to play football. Not asking the players to be robots.
The defense is doing this too. See Zimmers remarks after the Patrioits game. He said " he had them thinking to much".

I didn't see much of it, but I loved the Bratkowski replay nonsense.

He seems like a guy that gets anchored to his original idea. Thus, what he believes he sees on the field is what he is going to see on the replay. During the punt he immediately thought it hit Caldwell, and that appeared to be that.

Moreover, I can’t believe that they rely on a guy that heavily involved in the game to make replay decisions. Stupid.

Also the reason why they go so slow at times and have trouble getting the play off. When they went for it on fourth down, he seemed down right angry that they were going for it. He was bumbling along, rather than getting a play ready just in case, he was waiting to conform w/ Marvin that they were going for it. Can’t remember if this is true, but I believe he sighed or wearily put rubbed his hand on his forehead or something when Marvin said they were going for it.

Lo and behold, play wasn’t in quick enough, had to call a time out. IT’S TIME TO CLEAN HOUSE!

How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his children?

some f'ing confidence there

the OC should always assume they are going for it.
Hell, he should always have plays that he knows his guys can do. He should always WANT to go for it and sigh when they don’t.

Hmm..

Scratch what I said about drafting Luck (though I do want us to look into prospects next year). Having Palmer off the books is really gonna help us keep Joseph and Hall, but I gotta say, I really want to see what Palmer looks like with a competent OC in the booth and see if Palmer’s issues are really just the extent of Bratkowski’s madness.

Robotic perfection. That’s insane.

One warning, it won’t word-wrap, and the background takes extra space. So if you have a lot of sarcastic stuff to stay you’ll have to put in your own hard returns and space things out with TWO hard returns to get everything to show up. Like this:
