Clint Stitser ended up beating out three other kickers who were in for tryouts today — Garrett Lindholm, Nick Novak and Sam Swank. Novak and Swank were kicking in the UFL the past couple months. Novak has NFL experience while Swank was here for a couple weeks during the preseason last year.
Novak, who was the UFL’s Special Teams Player of the Year, had the best of the three kickers, making all but one of his attempts, but because of the UFL mandating transfer fees for players without practice squad eligibility, his chances of landing with the Bengals became moot. Under their revised offseason rules, the UFL can ask for up to $150,000 for a veteran player. It likely was not that for Novak, but it was high enough that the Bengals and other teams are not about to pay.
