Pregame Open Thread: Pittsburgh Steelers At Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals will be taking the field within a few hours, taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers in a much anticipated Monday Night Football meeting. Cincinnati is looking at turning around their season against a heated rival and the Steelers are looking rebound after last week's loss to the New Orleans Saints and keep pace with the Baltimore Ravens, who soundly beat the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

What are you expecting to see happen? Are you going to the game? Are you at the game tailgating, observing your never-ending need to always connect to Cincy Jungle from the phone?

This is the pregame open thread, so let's talk about the upcoming Bengals victory tonight. We'll post the first half open thread at 8pm tonight.

I think the only depressing part about this is I have class at 7:00 tonight and it goes until 9:30.

Though I can take my computer to class, but I’d need a stream. :\

Wow Josh, you're really going all out with the hype for this game.

Not that I’m complaining, though I think you need some Ryan Parker up.

Also, “Welcome to the Jungle” is obligatory, maybe Eye of the Tiger if you’re feeling cheesy, etc. And if it works and the Bengals win, Mike Brown should hire you as the guy who personally pumps the players up before each game.

So, what jersey should The Salad sport tonight?

I’m thinking Shipley.

Other options include Benson, Palmer, Maualuga, and another few that I can’t think of at the moment.

If you're a believer in the superstition that wearing a player's jersey will improve their performance, wear Maualuga's

If you feel like being badass, roll with Shipley’s.

If we win tonight, my Maualuga jersey comes out tomorrow and my Corey Dillon one appears Wednesday.

Look For Heads To Roll

If the Bengals lay a egg on prime time tonight, and dont be surprised if its Marvin Lewis, also for everyyyoneee to know,Mike Zimmer will NOT be coaching this team next year,I repeat NOT be coaching, the Bengals have had their share of “cordinators gone bad”,a name has already been swirling in the inner circles who it is,and you get to hear him tonight on MNF,he has told many many people he thinks it would be his “dream job”,and he played at the University Of Dayton, and is regarded as one the best QB coaches in the NFL,he can come in here straiten Carson Palmers mechanics, bring a firey attitude to the team and has playoff team history,Ladies And Gentlemen,I Introduce To You,The New 2011 Coach Of The Cincinnati Bengals… Jon David Gruden

Not So Fast My Friend

the salary will be alot higher than he makes as a analyst on MNF,and he has told many that he is interested in this job,Im telling you now people, this roster is going to roll over next year, this was a all in year and, well it didnt get it done, you can ask joe reedy and he’ll tell you at this point for next year, you got to consider starting all over, and why not,its not getting done on BOTH sides of the ball, and if your gonna bring someone in here knowing that, your gonna have to pay a little extra for quality,so to say no way, hardly, both sides want it to happen,it will happen,Jon Gruden is exactly what this team needs, everyone keeps saying Mike Brown, well,Mike has showed hes changed in the last couple years, and lets face it,coaches and owners dont play on the fields, its all about putting the right people in the right places,so lets get behind Jon Gruden, hes had alot a good mentors, namely one thats changing the ways the Browns are doing things now,so never say “no way”,cause thats the problem now,we gotta find a way to get this team back in the right direction, before its too late.

by Primal on Nov 8, 2010 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

couple of questions

(1) who specifically has Gruden told he’s interested in the bengals job, or where did you read this
(2) what has Mike Brown done to show “he’s changed in the last couple years”

I’m all for the positive outlook you have on this Gruden thing, and if “we” really were the ones finding a way to get back in the right direction things might be different. But unfortunately “we” are the Brown family.

by gpcu02 on Nov 8, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno, he's not been doing things flawlessly.

But when the OLine had issues, an OLinemen was drafted outright in 2009 and the offense was geared more towards the run to protect Palmer.

When it became sorely obvious we needed a TE, we drafted Gresham.

When it became sorely obvious we needed receivers, we signed Bryant (half-and-half, A for the effort, E for the lack of scouting or information about his knee), drafted Shipley and Briscoe, and then signed T.O. later when Bryant wasn’t going to work out.

We kept Zim.

We drafted two DLinemen.

The moves have very obviously been there. Is he 100% competent? No, there’s a lot of gogdamn issues and some player problems and the round peg in square hole issue. Bratkowski is still coaching here after all. But when it comes to getting the right kind of personnel, he at least makes a modest effort.

But that doesn’t change the fact that he’s cheap and still screws up as often as he pulls things off, if not more. I still attribute the lack of a true FB to him, I still attribute all the TEs-and-LBs-as-FBs to him, I still attribute Bryant’s failure to him because he doesn’t hire scouts, etc. He’s far from perfect and still far from competent, but effort is surprisingly something he’s willing to put forward. I just wish it was more.

I'm just eating up hype and hoping for wins at the moment.

The rest of the season will play out as it will, but I just want to see that L streak finally end on our front page. I want to see them play with some heart and determination like the last quarter for the Vikings yesterday. I want to see these guys realize these are the Steelers and for them to play them even better than they played the Ravens (if I see Benson get twenty carries, I’ll be pissed).

One time I saw him on the field Carson threw him a go this year, right spot, good placement, would have hit him in stride but for a good defensive play.
If Chad’s still here next year, then I mean I have no justification. Coming into this year Chad had earned the job in 2010 and his paycheck. Heading to 2011 if they think they have even a semi-viable replacement have to cut bait cuz Chad’s been awfully inconsistent.

This is what I'm saying.

I’m not expecting him to dominate because Chad is already at his position. It’s hard for him to get in a lot.

All I’m saying is that he’s had some time and can’t even get on the active list consistently. That’s pretty bad for a second rounder.

Drafted in 08, practiced to replace Chad in 09. Didn’t happen.
Practiced in 09 to replace Chad in 2010, didn’t happen b/c of good season for team
Practicing in 2010 to replace Chad in 2011.

My hit wishlist...

1) Rivers on Ward
2) Anyone on Ben
3) Any of our linemen on Harrison
4) Chris Crocker on Mewelde Moore

I’ll be happy watching any Steeler get jacked up but these are my favorites.

Never a better time to start than now.

I mean, they’ll likely double-cover T.O. over Chad so he’ll have more room to break free.

Honestly, I wanna see the guy still prove his worth, I like his character and good-natured personality, just wish he was still a good player to go along with it. At least Ray Lewis puts the effort in on the field.

It's cool...

Ship will pick up that ball and run with it, so to speak.

by KSE on Nov 8, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

I'd be cool with it as long as they have a true #1 to go along with him.

At this point, I doubt it’s Jerome, if you’ve got the makings of a true #1 and can’t beat out a #4 guy at best, you got problems.

Holy shit, I hope not.

The only way to beat the Steelers is to pass. Gresham could be a Steeler killer easily.

Agree

Don’t see that magical running game coming back on the legs of Benson.

How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his children?

by Grizzlyfox on Nov 8, 2010 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

RE:

Totally disagree. One of the biggest changes this year is that the team is passing a lot more. And look at it. We’re not winning time of possession, which is wearing down the defense.

Managing Editor at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Nov 8, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yeh, but our Running Game last year is a lot more productive than this year.

I’d be okay if they could use it to a respectable degree to win the TOP battle but it’s not as good as last year’s already and this is the #1 rush defense in the NFL we’re facing.

It’s kind of a pick your poison scenario.

I'd be okay with it if they didn't.

I like Ced, but we don’t need to pay top dollar for a short-yardage back and Scott could very easily handle the load, turf toe be damned.

RE:

I can see the point, but he can’t take the pounding in this division. When his carries increases, so has his injuries.

My point

If not Benson, we still need a power back.

Managing Editor at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Nov 8, 2010 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

I never said we didn't need one.

Just that I feel like we’re doing Ced a shame here as it is because we’re not providing him the scheme or personnel to excel and I don’t see that changing as long as Palmer is our QB, so I see him leaving by some series of event or another. We’ll then replace him with Peerman, Leonard, or some other short yardage back, but we’ll have one.

by Doc Scratch on Nov 8, 2010 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

my pick is

Gresham,I think he makes Palu play more honest

by Primal on Nov 8, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

I get the feeling...

It’s more about Benson having no interest in coming back. He’ll be a very appealing FA option for a number of clubs.

Not that we're used to it...

Reasons why the Bengals win

- Bengals had their number last year, and hopefully using the same 2009 formula that got them winning, they use it again.

- Bengals will play with emotion because it’s Monday Night AND it’s against the Steelers.

(now it’s your turn to keep the list going…)

Bengals Dline will finally get benched if it sucks.

Marvin gets tired of the bullcrap and does what it takes to win, giggles be damned.

It would be interesting to compare TO’s (or Jerry Rice’s) receiving yards to some of them.
