10 things I think I know after MNF

These are some of my observations after watching the game last night.

#1 Andre Smith will be a good player in this league, and is a giant improvement over Dennis Roland.

#2 Carson Palmer randomly discovered his arm again.  Palmer had that "zip" on his throws that we haven't seen in a couple of years, and he was much more accurate down the field.  Now if we can just get his intermediate throws to not be 8' high....

#3 Chad Ochocinco is a quitter and it's time to move on. I'll leave it at that.

#4 This is a completely different defense with J.Jo on the field

#5 Peko's hit on Troy almost ...almost made stomaching that loss easier

#6 When the line gives Palmer some time he looks good again (surprise surprise)

#7 It only took seeing Roland in for 1 play to see he is god awful

#8 Carson Palmer locks on to receivers (especially those named T.O)

#9 Though I don't think he has any heart.... T.O. is a beast

#10 This upcoming draft is going to make or break this team for years to come. With Chad and T.O most likely leaving our receiving core is going to be decimated and we STILL need to draft D/O linemen early.  2011 looks dicey

I only disagree — and then only partially — with #10. I want to disagree with #9 but you’re probably right, TO is likely only playing now for money. Well that and hope that next year he can go somewhere that isn’t a disaster like this franchise is. He almost certainly won’t want to stick around, but maybe we could talk him into staying if we throw enough money at him. And with him — for that matter, even without him — we’ve still got Shipley and Gresham. Used properly, that’s enough to at least be “a start”.

I say the time has come. Cut Chad and get Briscoe back. Find out if he was worth drafting or not. Or heck even play Simpson and just see what happens. Worst that happens is he proves us right and he goes over the summer too. But who knows, maybe with some game experience in a real game the lights will actually turn on. It happens to quarterbacks all the time, why can’t it happen to a WR who was previously a bust?

The season isn’t over, but it’s over from a “successful” standpoint. Start putting some kids to find out if there is anything there worth keeping. We have absolutely nothing to lose anymore.

by FriarBob on Nov 9, 2010 12:09 PM EST reply actions

We NEED to see Simpson out on the field this season

The Bengals have got to find out if he can play or not. We can’t go another off season with him stealing another spot on the 53.

TRU

plus if Brat is gone after this year, are we really going to let Simpson not learn another “new” system??? his chance is now, or never

by TruWhoDey on Nov 9, 2010 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely agree with 1, 3, and 8, not sure about 9

One of the reasons I want Gruden is to add a little mentoring to Palmer and get him out of this focusing on TO crap. And I’m hoping with the departure of Chad, Palmer will be less distracted by him. I wonder if Palmer hinders himself by trying to force it to or look often at Chad just to appease him. As a QB, the last thing you need is to be worrying about your shit-head recievers barking at you.

carson does lock on

even defenders talk about it. when was the last time you saw him pump fake? granted, he has .9 seconds to throw, so pump faking isn’t always a reality, but he could try.

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Nov 9, 2010 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

If Carson tries to pump fake, he ends up having his wind knocked out of him by a DE.

Not everyone has a great O-line.

I think they've been playing pretty adequately lately

the development of Andre Smith might be one of the few brightspots this year.

I agree on

Andre Smith
All points with Carson. Great to see what a QB can do when he has time.
I think Chad is a loser, and a quitter.
I think TO has shown alot of heart, so I disagree there.
Peko’s block on Polamalu needs to be shown on Sportscenter until 2011
Roland should never see a football field again.
Your last point I wonder if Chad isnt back after the season, will TO come back for another year or 2. If he will then maybe next season wouldnt look so dicey and the Lines can be built up. Clearly 3/5 of the O- line need upgraded.

by Bengal Brian on Nov 9, 2010 12:26 PM EST reply actions

the block that really made that one yard TD run work was Andre Smith

pushing his 3-4 DE back which was a lot harder than blocking a 225 pound safety with a running start. What almost made the play fail was Grisham’s weakass attempt at blocking the LB.

by Blue Steel on Nov 9, 2010 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

Ok he had a weak block

but his name is Gresham

Sorry to be nitpicky but so many people call him Grisham (even announcers at the games!). He’s a football player not an author.

by Oregonbengalsfan on Nov 9, 2010 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

if he can't block, then there's no reason for him to play TE

I actually think he can block, but was dissapointed at his lack of effort on that particular play. I just hope to see less of that.

Peko for fullback!

Agree wholeheartedly with 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8. Andre has a good future, and man do we need JonJo on that defense. I still think Hall is more expendable, given his penchant for blowing the deep routes. He’s more opportunistic, but Joseph is the only defensive back on the team who can take a No. 1 receiver out of the game. Peko’s block was awesome. Who says we need a FB on the team?

As for Carson, he looked good. Genuinely decent, and that’s coming from one of his sharpest critics on this blog. I don’t agree that he had his zip back. The intermediate routes were a disaster most of the night. The question, one for which we have to watch him in a few more games, is how much of that was a function of playing against the Steelers’ defense? I agree, though, that his deep accuracy was much better. Not excellent, but definitely good.

Chad is becoming a problem. If we want an athletic receiver with a bad attitude and poor routes to play across from TO, let’s just put Simpson in there for Christ’s sake! He sucks too! I don’t know how long this will last, but I have to say that they will be a great matchup for the banged up Colts. No run defense, an opponent with nothing to lose, and only one decent receiver going against some sick corners

Only one problem: Peyton Manning is really f***ing good at football. We’ll see how this turns out…

It's time to sink or Zim.

You know what I saw?

I saw a team that will win out the season and go 10-6. Bwaaaaahahahahaha and make the playoffs. Bwaaaaahahahahaa
Still optimistic, it ain’t over yet fellas……Until the fat lady sings. Bwaaaahaahaaaha

by WHYUS!! on Nov 9, 2010 5:02 PM EST reply actions

I'm going nuts..

My biggest problem with the game is the use of TEs at FB. We were 3rd and 1 and threw the ball again. Then When we were 3rd and 2, we put Kelly in as a FB and he whiffed on his block. Ummmm, hey Brat, why didn’t you put Peko in on that play?
I also watched Carson on the last play, he eyeballed Shipely the whole time and there is no possible way that Harrison should’ve kept up with the speedy Shipely. They knew Carson was going to Shipely. They do this all the time. On desperate or critical plays, they either go to the man in motion (Shipely) in the middle or dump it to the RB (Leonard) and I don’t think Leonard was in on that play. Hey Brat, you still can’t fool me and it looks like you can’t fool opposing defenses either, but whats new?
God! Why can’t I quit being a Bengals fan?

by WHYUS!! on Nov 9, 2010 5:22 PM EST reply actions

i think the perfect play in that situation would have been

the play action rollout pass to gresham. it’s worked twice this season and if gresham wasn’t open right away, theres still TO, ocho, ship, and leonard. they can’t send the house because it’s too close to the goal-line.

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Nov 9, 2010 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

not sure

I’m not so sure the first read was Shipley, and even if it was, I don’t think it was necessarily the fact that Carson was locked in on Shipley. I think it was Ike Taylor or whoever sandwiched Shipley with Harrison who said he knew the ball was coming to Shipley because he went in motion before the ball was snapped

by socalbengalfa on Nov 10, 2010 1:23 AM EST up reply actions

I believe it was brat

Someone said Shipley was the 2nd read

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Nov 10, 2010 10:07 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Ooooh man.

Gruden was highlighting some plays Andre was making blocking LaMarr Woodley all night. Granted, he let one go on the same “Chad Spiking the Ball” play, but yeh.

I think Chad needs to go and either commit to “beyond football” full time or get cut. If he gets cut then that may send a message to him. Either way, he won’t come back here, sad way for the greatest Bengal receiver to spend his career here to end.

And it’s not so bad guys. If T.O. and Chad both leave and Jerome can’t cut it, we’ll still only need one receiver. I’d really like to see Shipley as the #2 guy, he’s got the talent for it and needs to see the field more beyond the slot.

by Doc Scratch on Nov 9, 2010 8:13 PM EST reply actions

Not sure why you think we only need one more receiver.

We’d only have Shipley. I’m still not so sure about Cosby as a receiver.

In the few times he saw the field towards the end of '09

I saw something there that I saw from no other Bengals receiver besides Chad: the ability to get separation the ability to hang onto the football. For a guy who would likely take over in the slot, that’s all we’d need.

Throw in the fact that he’s a hard worker who will do everything that the coaches ask of him and you’ve got one hell of a potential slot receiver there. Just a question of if it actually happens.

by Doc Scratch on Nov 9, 2010 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

I like quan when he does go in for WR

Just because he knows his job is on the line every snap haha
it shows!

I don’t think he’s any worse then Jerome.

Big threat WR

Still think the Bengals should of made a move to get Marshall over the off season. With the departure of Ocho and TO the Bengals still need a deep threat guy and a go to true #1 WR. Shippley is best from the Slot. That position fits his game PERFECTLY. I’m fine with Caldwell at #2. But I am 100% not ok with Simpson at #1 (AKA Chad’s Spot). Would love to see what big name receivers are going to be available next year and strictly focus the draft to DL, DE and S.

by Carson'sConvicts on Nov 10, 2010 1:48 AM EST reply actions

Caldwell at #2 ?

The only time he got separation last year is when he was lined up as the #4

by smoormandiddy on Nov 10, 2010 6:40 AM EST up reply actions

RE; Bubba

Caldwell has very good straight line speed, but crossing/timing routes are where he struggles, you’re #1 and #2 have to be technicians on route trees.
I think if we keep Chad, TO comes back, if no chad, then no TO. Leaving us w/Simpson as #1, Shipley in the slot, and no clear #2. don’t be mistaken, we do NOT have a #2 on the roster is Chad and TO leave

by TruWhoDey on Nov 10, 2010 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

He probably would be less inclined to play without Chad

but I’d love to see TO without Chad. I almost feel like they are enablers to eachother. Similar to when Housh was here. With Chad gone, I think TO (and Palmer – as well as everyone else) would be more focused. I really hope Gruden can come in and convince TO to stay.

Marshall

Marshall would have been 8 plus million to the tune of 2 million for Owens and look at what he has done the first half of the season.

by James Schmid the great on Nov 13, 2010 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

At this point

It has to be an almost certain Chad isnt back next year. It is the only way this team can move forward and get better. I agree to that I would love to see TO here without Chad.

by Bengal Brian on Nov 10, 2010 12:19 PM EST reply actions

As would I

I just don’t see it happening :/

by Throw the ball on Nov 10, 2010 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

its not the only way

the first way is fire Bratkowski. Chad is not the problem that everyone is making him out to be. Listen to how Carson is talking about him lately, and TO of course has his back. The dude wants to win more than anything, and is frustrated b/c he feels if he gets the ball more that it gives us a better chance at winning. YES his cry baby act was one of the more pitiful things i’ve seen to date on an NFL field, but people are acting like Chad is what’s holding back our offense and IMO i don’t think that’s the case….

by TruWhoDey on Nov 10, 2010 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

You all make valid points, I think the coaching staff and MB should be forced to read the comment section, we could definetely improve our win record.

If we can't fire our owner can we fire our coaches and draft anew

Eight wins in a row and make the {play offs play offs) is still a SUPER MARIO PIPE DREAM. So let us look at ‘11 (non hold out)
1. Palmer is a yr older (still saying yes)
2. T.O. He is Batman where is Robin ?
3. We tried? Then he got in to trouble and lost trust.(Plus fumble)
4. Sign JJ for next yr. Then on paper our secondary looks scarier then a Steeler fan looking in the mirror.
5. With Smith Showing Progerss the line still needs help
6. 3rd & short and the TAZ is in at DT
7.Loved our last 2 LB picks (when the happened) but waiting for someting to happen.
8. Can’t wait for the Gresham era too happen
9. Arrrrrrrrrrugggg
10. MIKE BROWN IS STILL THE OWNER

by darth zalmer on Nov 10, 2010 10:26 PM EST reply actions

For 2011

Let’s make Andre Smith the fullback. Could you imagine that fat SOB blocking for us…He’s crush blockers in between his fat rolls.
