Am I the only one still COMPLETELY baffled by this?
I REALLY like Andrew Whitworth. He has definitely been one of, if not the best players on this offense in 2010. He’s as solid a LT as there is in the league, and I would even go so far as to say he’s bordering on elite status. And I also understand that Bengals fans, desperate to have something positve to cling to in this black hole of a season, would vote for Whit to go to the Pro-Bowl. maybe even in large numbers.
But how on earth is he SO HIGH on this list? Who else is, and more importantly HAS BEEN, voting for him all season? The team has been awful since the first snap of the year. While it certainly hasn’t been Whit’s fault, the running game has been bad and Carson has been getting knocked around in every game. The only primetime appearances we have been in have been humiliating. And I doubt many people outside of Cincinnati even know who Andrew Whitworth IS. How is he beating guys with name recognition and better records like Michael Oher or Joe Thomas? I kind of feel like this is like that year when the Redskins had a massive PR campaign to vote their players to the Pro Bowl and at one point something like 20 of the 22 starters on their very very bad team were all at the top of the voting until everyone caught on.
RE:
If Whitworth makes it, it’ll actually be such an informed vote that I may once again have confidence in the Pro Bowl selection process again.
For what it’s worth, Whitworth is rated as the second best left tackle in the NFL this year by PFF.
While it certainly hasn’t been Whit’s fault, the running game has been bad
True. However, the Bengals have run the football 91 times from the left guard out and averaging 4.4 yards/rush.
Carson has been getting knocked around in every game
Whitworth has only allowed three QB sacks. Jake Long has allowed three and Joe Thomas has allowed five.
Consider also that Whitworth has played in 912 snaps this year. Only two other left tackles have as many snaps, so Whit’s sample is much larger and production is steady.
Like I said, it’s an informed vote that has Whitworth on top. Remember, this is about individual awards, not team based.

I understand the reasoning and I agree with it.
It’s just that’s almost NEVER how these things actually play out and it’s really strange to see them play out that way for a relatively unknown offensive lineman on one of the league’s worst teams who can’t even point to a flourishing rushing or passing attack to take some credit for.
Totally
It’s why I’m as shocked as you when the reports first surfaced…

RE:
Honestly. I think Rivers is very disliked among fans and Manning has one of the great recognized names this side of Brett Favre.
