The Top Five Reasons the Bengals Shouldn't Play for a Draft Pick

These days, there isn't much to look forward to if you're a Bengals fan. There's always tailgating but if you don't have tickets, due to the NFL's awesome blackout policy, you can't even watch the Bengals lose from the comfort of your own home. These are dark days indeed.

For many of the Bengals faithful, the only thing worth looking forward to now is the 2011 NFL draft and the possibility of playing for a first overall pick. While I agree that a first overall pick is an exciting concept, I don't think the Bengals should strive to get it. The following five reasons are why.

Reason 5: The Baltimore Ravens

If I created a poll asking which three teams Bengals fans hate the most, I'm assuming the most hated team would be the Pittsburgh Steelers, the second most hated would be the Baltimore Ravens and the third would be the Cleveland Browns. It's possible that the Raven and Browns would be flipped but that's not important. The point is, Bengals fans don't like the Baltimore Ravens.

Star-divide

Right now, the Ravens are in fifth place in the AFC and are sitting pretty in the first wild card spot. However, they haven't locked up their playoff spot. The Bengals play their last regular season game against the Ravens in Baltimore. The Ravens play the Saints and Browns before that game. If they drop one of those two and San Diego or Indianapolis wins out, the Bengals could be in position to knock the Ravens out of the playoffs in their last game.

You can't tell me that wouldn't feel sweet. The Bengals might not have had a successful year but they would end this terrible excuse for a football season by crushing the playoff dreams of one of our most hated rivals. Considering how the Bengals seem to have the Ravens number, it's not completely impossible.

Reason 4: Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers has never shot a man or punched a hooker. Based off of Rivers' ability on a football field and the previous sentence, people should love Rivers the way they love Peyton Manning or Tom Bra.... never mind. They don't though. In fact, they do the exact opposite to Rivers. They hate him. And I don't mean that fans hate him because he always beats their favorite teams. No, they hate him with the fury of a thousand suns for other reasons. Why though?

They just do.

Maybe it's Rivers' trash talking that irks most fans or maybe it's the fact that he looks like every bully whoever beat us up in grade school combined. Whatever it is, it makes everybody hate him to the point that there can almost be a scientific law about it. Something along the lines of: P. Rivers' Mother ≥ Only Person Who Likes Him (because she has to) ≠ everybody else. Of course I don't have a doctorate in the why people hate Philip Rivers field so I'm just assuming that is one of the first equations you would have to learn to get that degree.

Think how great it would be that, when the Bengals host the Chargers on December 26, the defensive line and linebackers punished Rivers every time he dropped back to pass and a decimated secondary intercepted a couple of his passes on the way to a win, which of course would destroy any hopes that the Chargers have about going to the playoffs as a wild card team. What a great Christmas present that would be.

Reason 3: The Cleveland Browns

Do you want to get swept by the Cleveland Browns? No?

Neither do I and I'm positive the Bengals don't either. The Bengals are going to be the last place team in the AFC North this season no matter what but at least they could save a little face by winning the battle of Ohio at least once this season.

I don't know why but a 2-14 season in which the Bengals get swept by the Browns sounds exponentially worse than a 3-13 season in which the Bengals beat the Browns at home. The balance of power in the AFC North may be shifting away from the Bengals (like they ever really had any) and to the Browns and a win on Sunday may just be delaying the inevitable but it would still, at least for me, help me digest this terrible season.

Reason 2: Nobody Likes a Quitter

The Bengals would need to lose their remaining three games if they want a chance at the first overall draft pick. If they win one of those three games, they could possibly fall from first or second pick all the way back to the fifth overall pick based on their strength of schedule.

If you really think about it, do you want the Bengals to throw in the towel on their last three games of the season in order to get a higher draft pick than No. 5? I know I don't. I would hate the idea of the Bengals throwing a game so they have a chance at a a certain player in the draft. In fact, that is what they make bad sports movies about. The only people who hate that idea more than me are probably the players and I can guarantee you that they aren't planning on playing for a draft pick. To me, the best possible ending to this disappointing season so far would be to beat the Browns, then the Chargers and then the Ravens and finish the season with a 5-11 record.

Reason 1: What Good is a No. 1 Overall Pick Going to do Anyway?

I'm assuming that if the Bengals were desperate enough for a first overall pick that they are willing to lose their final three games, it would be because they want a shot at Stanford quarterback, Andrew Luck. Luck, I'm sure, is going to make a great professional quarterback one day. He has the brains and all the physical skills necessary to do so. He has been compared to Peyton Manning. So?

Considering that the Bengals are likely going to need a new running back, one or two new starting receivers, offensive lineman, defensive lineman and a safety. Drafting Luck would be the equivalent of the Bengals putting a band-aid on a bullet wound.

When you look at how the Bengals have underachieved in every way that a football can underachieve this season, drafting a safety or offensive lineman or defensive lineman or running back makes just as much sense, if not more sense, than drafting a quarterback would. There are too many holes in this team for one rookie quarterback to fill (HA!).

Oh and…. yea, fuck it, let’s go after Luck. Do we really have anything to be concerned about in regards to pride? I almost hope Baltimore and Pitt make it into the playoffs to say FU to MB. I’m tired of seeing Palmer blowing games and it’s time to at least get excited about another QB prospect.

The top 5 reasons the Bengals SHOULD play for a draft pick

Reason 5: Marvin Lewis
The more we keep sucking, the less likely we will resign Marvin Lewis. At this point, I, as most fans, believe Marvin Lewis should no longer be our head coach.

Reason 4: Carson Palmer
The more we keep sucking, the less likely we will retain Carson Palmer and his monstrous salary. At this point, I, as most fans, believe Carson Palmer should no longer be our QB.

Reason 3: At this point, we don’t really care if the we get swept by the Brownies, or the Ravens get in the playoffs, or that people hate Philip Rivers, are you kidding me, what could be worst? =>not getting the #1 pick.

Reason 2: Quitting? Our team already quit. I don’t blame them, they’re playing for Mike Brown.

Reason 1: Andrew Luck. Nuff said.

Good try though.

Chargers got Ryan Leaf I, and then made up for it with Drew Brees and then Phillip Rivers

And that’s with Eli Manning in between (for about 30 seconds).

After reading both lists, I have to agree more with jimbasa’s list.
1. Lewis doesn’t have the respect of the players, because they know Mikey runs the team. Don’t think so? Look back to when Lewis said they would not re-sign Henry, and Mikey did, making him look like a tool.

2. Palmer? Done. Bye bye! Injuries and production don’t warrant your salary.

3. Ravens? Browns? Rivers? Doesn’t matter. Personally, I believe all three of them are going to destroy the Bengals. Ravens D, Hillis runs amuck and Rivers airs it out against a decimated secondary, nuff said.

4. They already quit. I even believe some of them are faking injuries so they can be put on IR now and don’t have to waste time going through the motions of a full game.

5. Andrew Luck? Top draft pick? Honestly, it won’t even matter. Palmer was a great QB coming out of college, until Mikey got a hold of him. Remember, it’s not the QB or the talent, it’s the system. How else is it that without Brady the Pats still made the playoffs? Or that without Addai, Gonzalez, Dallas, Garcon for a bit and Bob Sanders missing from the D, Manning is still able to lead his team to a winning record and contend for the playoffs. Or without VJ and some O-Line starters, even missing Gates and Floyd for several games, Rivers can still air it out and connect with people you never heard of to win games and contend for the playoffs. Let’s face it, until Mikey let’s go of football operations and Brat is gone as OC, it won’t matter who is QB. Different QB, same results. If they do get the number one pick, maybe Mikey will just get stupid as usual and waste it on some unknown QB instead. Not like his history of #1 picks is all that great to begin with, so there is no guarantee there either.

by tecknical on Dec 15, 2010 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

. How else is it that without Brady the Pats still made the playoffs?

They didn’t. They got to 11-5 but missed playoffs on tie-breaker.

And Matt Cassel isn’t exactly a bad QB – 23 TDs, 4 Ints this year as a starter in KC.

does anyone honestly think a single draft pick will make a difference? If Luck goes to Carolina, he’ll become the next Peyton Manning; if he goes to the Bengals, he’ll be the next Don Hollas.

I've loved Palmer as a role model and a sportshero

and he hasn’t been bad. But I think we’ve seen him peek and I don’t believe he’ll ever get any better – reference my recent fanpost.

My hope is MB retires after next year due to lack of sellouts, especailly in the luxary box department where it’ll actually hurt him, and hand the team over to his daughter who buys into hiring a GM and more scouts.

If you don’t believe that or something similar in fortune will possibly happen, I’d probably recommend you stop being a Bengals fan. I know I wouldn’t be…… :-(

the 1 good thing that would come out of Brat being HC

is that we wouldn’t need an organized fan effort to voice our displeasure- NO ONE would show up to watch the games and I’d wager to say probably 40-65% of season ticket holders would walk. That would be the collective last straw for this fan base and it would be Mike Brown falling on his own sword

If the playoff positions are set...

…you’d expect the Ravens to sit out the last game and get healthy for the playoffs.

But I can’t imagine the Ravens will want to be swept by the Bengals. We may not have the choice to play for draft position. We could just earn it.

by IllinoisBengal on Dec 15, 2010 10:27 PM EST reply actions

If there is anything I've learned about the 2010 Bengals

it’s that they refuse to win. The Ravens could start all their back ups and the Bengals might be dominating but at the end of the day the Ravens would have more points-somehow. This team does not have the will to win right now. They need a complete coaching overhaul. Let’s hope that the new blood will dilute the poisonous blood of the front office (MB) enough so that it’s not another 20yrs of futility.

Win out

I want my favorite team to win. Playing for a draft pick is shit. As much as I want Luck or Green, i would rather have some wins, 5-11 sounds alot better to me than 2-14. The top 5 people on lists in whatever order thay have will pretty much be Luck, Green, Bowers, Quinn and Newton. I feel all besides Luck is hit or miss, and the Bengals arent getting Luck anyways so whats the big deal.

by JCompton41 on Dec 15, 2010 11:01 PM EST reply actions

Oh hell yes I want them to win out.

Playing for a draft position is like playing for hope. Mike Brown has officially run out of hope to sell. Give me victory at this point, damn the odds.

At this point I'm numb.

Win or lose, it’s not going to matter much. Were going to draft newton, and our head coach will be zimmer next year. Book it – 6 – 10 next year.

by ddbumpus on Dec 16, 2010 12:58 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Y'know what.

I want us to do one thing: stay right in front of the Cardinals position-wise. For everyone who wants to trade down and get as many picks as possible, that position is probably the most prime to do it (if we’re #1, we’re taking Luck, no questions asked, but that’s not filling as many needs). Arizona needs a new franchise QB. I doubt they’re satisfied with Skelton just because he didn’t give the game away two days ago. So sitting right in front of them on the draft will get suitors like Miami, Seattle, and possibly Minnesota to call Mike Brown’s number and ask what it’d take to get his draft position so they get their choice of Locker, Newton, or Mallett. Then we get that goldmine of picks we want to move back and get more people to fill more holes.

We’re currently two wins away from this. If both Carolina and us win this Sunday, we’re possibly right in front of them. If the Cards win one and lose two, and we win two while the Bills lose all the way out (I want the Lions to just win in general, they’re pretty much getting Peterson for sure), we’ll get the spot right in front of Arizona. Let’s do this.

Great Lists - Either Way, Everyone is RIGHT

You can see the bright orange duct tape strapped to a stick that has the Bengals Bus turning left into oncoming traffic down I-75. I love our division and it’s rivalries. It’s a weird mix of hate, love, and holiday dinner invites.

Run your franchise like a Subway and you will get Subway results. Unfortunately, the culture of the organization isn’t geared toward whatever any of you readers would notice as winning. You deserve better.

Some people are experts at certain things. Some people are like stupid parents who just “know best”. Marvin Lewis as a coach was a good move for a time. Jerry Jones seems to be very involved with his team. Like him or not, he produces, and is about what he’s best at. Business. I wouldn’t be able to say what MB is good at.

Hard Knocks showed a little bit of the way the team is run. It doesn’t even seem like the team is run by competitive people. Nosy people yes.

I don’t really think anyone really has “control” or is leading this organization.

lose out!!!

here’s the way i see it, if my team doesn’t make the playoffs, then i want them to lose as many games as possible so we can get a high draft pick. sure we feel like losers now, but come april when we’re selecting the best DE, QB, OT, or RB in the draft, we’re going to feel like winners and our excitement for OTAs and training camp will be restored.

think about last year. how many people are still happy about making the playoffs? i don’t know many. it’s because as fans we live in the moment. this moment happens to suck ass.

Win Out!

I’m sick and tired of this culture of losing in Cincy. You play for pride, and you play for next year. In 2008, we carried our winning streak into the next year, and I believe that in 2011, we could do the same thing. Couple that with the fact that even if we lose out, we’re not garunteed to get the #1 pick. It’s not like in Basketball where the #1 pick could mean the difference between LeBron James and Darko Milicic. Typically if you have a top 10 pick you can get an elite player at a position of need.

I mean, I want the Bengals to draft Luck as much as the next guy, but I don’t want them to sacrifice their pride to get him.

There is nothing I want more than for the Bengals to get Luck. The best way for that to happen is to hire John Harbaugh to coach against his big bro twice a year. The Bengals may be the most unlucky team in the history of the NFL and now its time to get a little Luck on our side!

I dont know why people think Palmer is going to disappear

his huge contract is one reason he stays. There are very few teams we can deal him to and they can’t just cut him. He is signed through 2014. For better or worse we are stuck with Palmer. I doubt any team would take him on a trade without the Bengals having to eat a huge part of his salary, and that ends up being wasted money.
