Bengals Drop To Third Overall In 2011 NFL Draft

Most Bengals fans were simply thrilled when the team finally snapped their 10-game losing streak, which lasted 84 straight days, or 12 weeks, or 2,016 hours (give or take). I'm with you there. I'll take a win any day of the week. The loss, as some will argue, hurts the team's draft position towards acquiring better talent -- such as Andrew Luck, who hasn't declared if he's leaving with two years remaining of eligibility. And as Peter King points out, the Carolina Panthers will likely draft Luck if the redshirt sophomore elects to come out.

According to James Walker (we're pretty sure he got this one right), the Broncos and Bengals are tied for the worst record in the AFC. Denver lost to the Oakland Raiders this weekend while the Bengals beat the Cleveland Browns 19-17. That never gets old. Additionally, if the Bengals win at least one of the next two games, then Cincinnati will be locked out of the first overall draft pick, even if the Panthers win out, by virtue of Cincinnati's 20-7 win over Carolina earlier this year.

By virtue of the Strength of Schedule tie breaker between the Broncos and Bengals -- Cincinnati has the toughest strength of schedule in the NFL -- the Bengals have slipped to the third overall draft pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Even though Luck could be out of reach, if he declares for the draft, the Bengals have a collection of needs across the board. They could always look to draft another offensive tackle, or even a defensive tackle. A defensive end could help add to the team's impressive youth movement with Carlos Dunlap, Michael Johnson and Geno Atkins. And then what about safety? The Bengals have no enforcer-style safety and a handful of safeties with expiring contracts. What about wide receiver, with Terrell Owens departing and Chad Ochocinco's return being 50/50, if the team picks up his 2011 option. You can't look past running back, which could be lacking a feature back if Cedric Benson moves on into free agency.

It just makes too much sense that no matter where the Bengals draft in the top-five, to trade the pick away and acquire more picks in the 2011 NFL draft. There's too many needs and not enough draft picks.

Umm yea it sucks we have to this conversation this time of year.

I agree though I don’t think they’re are and top 5 talents for the offensive line to I agree with trading down. Luck to me is “moot”. I don’t think even if we get the top spot in the draft that we’ll take him. I think Carson has his job pretty well secured in Mike Browns head.

Damn I butchered that comment.

I meant’ to say I don’t think there are any top 5 talents for offensive lineman.

I really think Green is the pick.

Jerome Simpson is clearly not going to be a #1 WR in this league. We might be able to salvage something from him, but he’s not going to replace Chad. Green can. He could be better.

In theory I like the idea of trading down, but in theory I like the idea of Mike Brown not being the GM making the trade. Outside of Luck, who is a top-5 pick in this draft that someone is going to mortgage their draft on? And a top-5 pick is worth SEVERAL draft picks. I doubt Mike Brown could negotiate something worthwhile. Take AJ Green and your receiving corp is set for a long time between him, Shipley, and Gresham.

No, I think we can.

And we’re in the perfect spot to do it for someone desperate enough for a QB.

The Bengals, according to this:
http://www.sbnation.com/2010-nfl-draft/2010/12/20/1887020/2011-nfl-draft-order-carolina-panthers-number-1-pick
are currently right in front of the Arizona Cardinals—the same Cardinals who have had a QBBC approach the entire season. They are very obviously in need of a true franchise QB and John Skelton, Derek Anderson, and that other guy they drafted in the offseason are not one. They will very likely be looking to take one in the draft.

The only potential franchise QBs here are Luck (taken), Newton, Locker, and maybe Mallett. Considering that, if Luck declares, he goes #1 overall, no questions asked, bar none. That leaves Newton, Locker, and Mallett on the board with Arizona, Minnesota, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami, Oakland, and Jacksonville all potentially needing one of them. Sure, one of them may trade up for Luck in the first place, but not counting Arizona and taking one off, that’s still five potential suitors. Mike Brown may be dumb but he might be able to pull this off. Maybe.

Buddy Nix has routinely expressed confidence in Fitzpatrick.

They, like us, have more pressing needs than QB.

Rooting for a W at 2-11

This always rooting for a win argument is bull shit. The team is 2-11. There is little right with the Bengals. Rooting for a W to lower our draft pick and give Mike Brown a false sense of security that things might be alright is futile. The “real fan” rooting for a win and pointing out that those who don’t are not true fans when we’re 2-11 is just dumb. Rooting for the higher draft pick and for perhaps extra fuel to make more drastic changes is in the long term interests of the club. We are cheering for the long term interest of the club (which although perhaps hopeless are less hopeless than the short term interests).

Im not rooting either way.

A win is a plus and a lost can be looked at as one also. At this point I’m just watching the games numb of emotions.

Oh boy, the "wanting victory is a bad thing" spiel.

How ass-backward is this fanbase to make statements like this? Even Lions fans aren’t spewing this kind of shit.

A win against another bad team

Just deludes us from the issues.
The reason they went to the run is because Carson Palmer is worth about 7 points to the opposing team. So reduce his throws and run more.

Lets see if that works against SD and Baltimore. I’m going to guess it won’t. Lets give Simpson a chance in the remaining games, something the Bengals have never done with the kid.

As for who they draft, it’s impossible to tell at this point. If there are lots of good QB’s in the draft, as I think there is, obviously they go get one early.
Then ponder how the Bengals pay CP $12 million next year when his QB rating will be under 80 and mediocre for four straight years.

In this draft, they should get two starters with the number 1 and 2 picks, hopefully one will be a QB and the other in a position of dire need such as free safety, guard, WR, RB, DT, CB. Well with that many dire needs, they should have plenty to choose from.

>Let's give Simpson a chance

Gee, I wonder who’s throwing to him.

My top three

At this point, if we get Green, Bowers, or Fairley, I’ll be thrilled. We need help at all three positions. (Let’s not fall into the trap of assuming the d-line is fine just because Dunlap and Atkins are doing well. That’s great, and let’s hope it continues, but you can’t have too many pass-rushers.)

I agree, and wouldn't mind if we did draft them.

I just don’t see Mikey paying top 5 money to a guy like Bowers or Fairley and not starting him or having him play a significant portion of the game. He can get depth in later rounds than the first. A.J. Green just seems like the likely pick from Mike Brown’s standpoint if it’s not a QB.

Hello Carimi Goodbye Hippopotasmith

I would take the best tackle in the draft and tell Andre to piss off. I don’t see them cutting the golden boy Palmer so QB is out. The yound defensive line looks better so tackle in 1st and best defensive player in the 2nd.

by JoseOle on Dec 21, 2010 9:24 AM EST reply actions

Carimi is not a top 5 pick.

by Cry on Dec 21, 2010 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

Look at the potential draft depth at some of the positions we have needs for.....

I don’t have the names in front of me, but there is quite a bit of depth at DE/OLB in this draft. Depth that you can draft in the 2nd or 3rd rounds, and still be getting pretty good talent.

As much as I like Bowers and Fairly, I still think you HAVE to take AJ Green if he is projecting to be a like the Johnsons (Hou/Det).

Don’t forget, as early as we’re picking, our 2nd round pick is still going to be pretty valuable as well.
