Will Benson Be a Bengal Next Season?

CINCINNATI OH - DECEMBER 19: Cedric Benson #32 of the Cincinnati Bengals carries the ball against the Cleveland Browns at Paul Brown Stadium on December 19 2010 in Cincinnati Ohio. (Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)

Between the answers of definitely yes and definitely no, my answer to the question of whether or not Benson will play for the Bengals next season is I have no clue. I really don't. I don't stray farther to one side or the other. I can't even bring myself to guess.

Even when I think about the fact that Benson has had the best years of his career in Cincinnati and he was the Bengals offense when they went to the playoffs in 2009, I remember that he struggled at times this season and the NFL, maybe more so than any other professional sports league in America, is a what have you done for me league. So, you're guess is as good as mine.

The best answer, I think, is that it depends. Benson's return to Cincinnati will depend on a pending coaching change, the Bengals draft choices, which free agent running backs are available and how much they cost.

So, since there are so many variables in the question about Benson's future with the Bengals, it's easy to see how it's not at all easy to see a clear answer.

I think Benson would like to be back here. This is an organization that gave him a second chance in 2008 to prove he is a top-flight running back after the disappointing three years in Chicago. However, I don’t see him returning if this team has the same offensive philosophy it had this year. Look at it this way if you were in Benson’s shoes, you helped win a division title with a physical, running philosophy and then that system was basically scrapped on July 29 with the signing of Terrell Owens. Would you want to come back?

Another big question for next season is Jonathan Joseph. The two biggest potential free agents coming out of Cincinnati are clearly Benson and Joseph. The biggest question could be who is the most important to sign.

Benson.

Here's why.

Behind Benson on the depth chart is Bernard Scott who has proven to be an effective change of pace back but there are some serious doubts still about his ability to be an every down back like Benson is. Behind Scott there is nobody other than Brian Leonard.

On the other side of the ball, behind Jonathan Joseph is Adam Jones who was sidelined this season due to an injury to his neck. If he can get healthy with enough time to participate in off season drills, he could easily slide into Joseph's starting cornerback role.

It makes sense that the Bengals would sign Benson, who is the first running back to have back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons since Rudi Johnson did it in '05 and '06. Unfortunately, what makes sense isn't always what the Bengals front office does.

Before you make a decision on whether or not you think Benson will be in a Bengals uniform next season, here's how he stacked up against former Bengals running backs Corey Dillon and Rudi Johnson.

Cedric Benson: 791 carries for 3004 yards (3.8 yards per carry average) with 15 touchdowns and 11 100-yard games.

Corey Dillon: 611 carries for 2,767 yards (4.5 ypc) with 14 touchdowns and 10 100-yard games.

Rudi Johnson: 565 carries for 2,379 yards (4.2 ypc) with 18 touchdowns and 9 100-yard games.

Either way really

T.O. has pretty much decided it is time to burn bridges, and with him gone, the running game comes back. With one diva WR gone, the other WR will block more selflessly, which is what leads to great runs. And that’s what we can end up with when we have Benson. Or, ya know Scott can find a friend and we can do that. Doesn’t matter so long as we can run it

Heeeeey, Ochocinco, he's a good guy, no?

i say he wont

Because J.Joe has to be resign or tagged. If tagged, he will count about 12-14 million against the cap. Throw in the amount of other free agents the team has. And how RBs are a dime a dozen. I say he’s gone

J-Jo is more important

And here’s why.
Running backs are a dime a dozen. Give them a solid line and anyone can run through those holes.

This isn’t fantasy football, a shutdown corner is going to be more valuable then an under performing RB.

Sorry Jason, But there is no way Benson is more important than Joseph. Adam Jones is a great third corner, but he was fragile this year and is coming off injury. Meanwhile, Joseph is one of our two best players on D. Hopefully we can sign both guys, but Joseph is way more important to this team.

Worry about the line first, RBs second.

Benson is an extremely impressive (and passionate) athlete, but I’m afraid that he’ll want to be the centerpiece of an offense…and to be paid like one. If we want to keep Joseph, I don’t know if we can afford that.

If we were a normal team, I’d feel comfortable drafting/signing OL and grabbing a mid-round workhorse RB to team with Scott and Leonard. But MB’s history with drafting RBs isn’t the best. We lucked out with Corey Dillon, but beyond that…do we really want Rudi 2.0, some guy that needs a super-elite o-line to be effective?

I think Benson goes to a smarter, running-challenged team. Instead of relying on MB to draft someone, I’d rather try Peerman or bring in a FA, and spread the carries more evenly. We don’t have that many draft picks, this year, and it’d be nice to be able to solve this outside of the draft. But if we grab a RB, I’ll try to keep my hopes up.

To quote a very intelligent (and good looking) man...

There are 5 good arguments why it would be smart to resign Benson

Resigning Benson could provide some stability
This doesn’t seem to be a RB rich draft class
Benson is just a badass
There aren’t many FA running backs that you could sign for less than Benson
By not drafting a RB (particularly in the first three rounds), the team is freed up to address other positions of need

I don’t know if Benson is more important to sign than Joseph, but he will be cheaper. I think there would be room for both if they cut Odom and Geathers though.

This is our year!

Benson vs Joseph?

That’s a ridiculous question. Joseph is on the cusp of being a shutdown corner. You could make a good argument he is already. He can’t catch a cold, but he is a very good cover corner and deflects a lot of passes. Benson is a mediocre ground pounder who every once in a while actually puts some heart into it and looks pretty good.

Where did you get those stats? Here’s what I got, looking at each RB for 2 consecutive seasons in Cincinnati:

Benson (2009/2010): 3.9 ypc, 1 td every 44.4 carries, averaging 1,128 yards per season
Corey (2000/2001): 4.2 ypc, 1 td every 38.5 carries, averaging 1,375 yards per season
RudI (2004/2005): 4.2 ypc, 1 td every 29.1 carries, averaging 1,456 yards per season

Benson doesn’t compare to either. When he really tries, he can dominate a game. Sadly that only happens 2-3 times per year at best. Most of the time he’s worth 2 yards and a quick fall. There doesn’t seem to be a middle ground with him, either he bowls people over and drives for more yards for most of the game or else he spends the whole game falling as soon as someone comes near him (if not sooner). It has to be a question of desire/drive/character. Admittedly playing for the Bengals can have anyone questioning their motivation, but Ced was the same way in Chicago, and Rudi and Corey were able to put forth good consistent effort in Cincinnati.

I’d prefer to keep Ced if..
1) He’s not very expensive
2) The front office/coaching changes motivate him to put forth consistent effort
and..
3) There isn’t a better FA RB available

Joseph I want to keep no matter what

If the line blocks anyone can get 2-3 yards.

Paying a runningback thats not a Chris Johnson or AP type is dumb. All Benson is, is a power runner. Thats all he does. You can get a good power runner in the 7th round of that draft. Bensons not a factor in the passing game, and isnt really a threat to take it all the way. Hes steady, and reliable, just like most backs will be getting the ball 25 times a game behind a solid run blocking line. Joseph on the other hand can take a teams best reciever out of the game and will not be replaced by Adam Jones. Adam Jones could be a decent corner, but hes not taking away a reciever like Joseph. Joseph is not replacable, Benson is easily replaceable.

your right

Unless you get the premier RB of the league they’re replaceable. Power RB’s are a dime a dozen he’s your workhorse send him up the middle

Speaking of 7th round running backs.. Allen Bradford anyone?

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

sometimes it seems like Benson

is running on ice. Falls down and trips himself up a lot.

J Joe is the priority but I think some are selling Benson short

Yes,he hasnt had the best of seasons but who on this team offensively has played with passmarks(Shipley,Gresham and possibly Whit….thats about it). Benson was a monster last season and has shown glimpses of it this year but Brats fucking insane gameplans and playcalling have disrupted any semblance of rythm in in the running game. Last year we had a fair bit of joy on stretch plays, everyone knows its coming so what do we do to change it up…more stretch plays…fuck me,like the passing game its so predictable, that unless Ced and the line are lights out every play they are getting stuffed.

I think we should make the effort to sign this guy and make him the focal point of the offense,it will help Carson no ends. De Angelo Williams is the only RB out there that offers more in FA. I like Bush from Oakland but he is Ced Mk2.

by pilks1075 on Dec 21, 2010 5:30 AM EST reply actions

i agree we need to focus on the run

But most backs we get will be able to produce just as good as Benson. If he dosnt want premier back money I’m all for bringing him back, but he’s to replaceable to pay a lot for.

What about Ahmad Bradshaw.

We could use him, he is a free agent at the end of the year.

by STJ32 on Dec 21, 2010 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

i think hes going to stay with the giants

Even if not he’s a bernard scott type back, not the bell cow runner we would need to replace

by JCompton41 on Dec 21, 2010 10:55 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

The run game is better with a fullback

that is all
