Simpson=Dunlap

Supposedly the reason Jerome has never played is because he hasn't practiced well. Well that was the case with Dunlap, and look how he plays when its gametime. This is actually pretty common that players play better when the spotlight is on them. Heck Plaxico Burress had his pro bowl year in 2007 when he didn't practice at all during season because of injury. I think Marvin clearly has judged players too much on how they perform in practice and not enough how they play under the lights. All I know is as it stands, we should probably draft a reciever with first pick unless a QB other than Luck is worth it at the 3-4 pick. Another question, do you all want Marvin Lewis back?

Oh Boy, Where to start?

I’ll start with the easy answer first..Jerome had a good game but lets remember that he probably only EARNED a 1 TD game. His second TD was only because Carson Palmer caught the defense off guard and still in the huddle. But yes, I was impressed by Jerome Simpson today, and I am a little more inclined to trade Chad for draft picks and start fresh at WR. Having a WR duo in Simpson and Caldwell is too mediocre, the Bengals need a bit more of a promising WR Threat type like Dez Bryant.

Next the Draft: Now that the Bengals are going to to in the 4th-6th draft choice range I would be perfectly happy drafting a DT in Marcelles Dareus or Nick Fairley or WR A.J. Green. I know that Cam Newton will probably still be available but I’m not entirely sold on him and his place in the NFL and Carson has proved that he can still be a winning QB when his OL blocks for him and gives him time in the pocket. Resign Benson and address OL, DL, S and WR in the draft.

Now the Hard Part: Marvin Lewis is a good coach. Not great, but good. I wouldn’t mind it if he was fired and we did start fresh with a new coach but not when Mike Brown is still in-charge and calling the shots. It doesn’t matter if you have Bill Cowher as your coach, Mike Brown needs to step aside from being the team’s GM. Something I think Marvin Lewis has done since being with the Bengals was improving our Draft picks. Pre-Marvin, the Bengals wasted picks in the draft but recently our Draft classes have been getting better and better.

In a perfect world I would like to see Mike Brown do what he does best and count the money as the team’s owner, have Marvin Lewis become GM, FIRE Bobby Brat, promote Zimmer to head Coach and look for new Offensive and Defensive Coordinators.

I don't understand all the suggestions for Marvin as a GM

I’m not saying he wouldn’t be a good GM, but what is the basis for thinking that? Coaching and evaluating talent are two different things. What exactly has Marvin done in the GM department to warrant that promotion? And based on the fact it has taken so long for guys like Andre Smith, Simpson and Dunlap to get playing time, I’m becoming concerned about his player assessments.

GMs don't make the assessments for players getting on the field, though.

I certainly think that Mike Brown, in no way, shape, or form, had any influence in keeping Jerome Simpson on the bench this long. Things like that would be on the head coach as GMs merely deal with player management in the sense of signing and maintaining their contracts.

If you want to judge Marvin as a GM, judge him by his drafts, especially the last two. And keep in mind that was done with three scouts and his coaches doing most of the scouting.

Besides, if Mike Brown does hire a GM, I have every reason to believe it’s Marvin. Marvin still thinks he’s going to be here next year and Mike Brown only slammed the door shut on a GM that’s outside of the organization. He never said anything about guys still inside it. That would include Marvin Lewis, even if Brown’s most likely alluding to himself keeping the power.

well that would be interesting

but very weird, considering you’d have a GM who for all intensive purposes was fired as the HC, being over his replacement. I’m not sure how that would work out.

Mike Brown promised an "interesting" offseason to that one guy who supposedly had a 15 minute phone conversation with him.

do you have a link to this story?

I’m not familar with this compelling hint. And I’m hoping this capstones my Christmas with the promise of MB finally stepping down as GM. OH PLEASE MAKE IT TRUE!!!!!

Hell, now that I think about it, it was featured on the main page.

It’s probably in the archive.

your right

It’s in both fanshot and archives for the main page. It was a letter written to a season ticket holder. Although there was another fan that had a phone conversation with him too.

by WHYUS!! on Dec 27, 2010 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

I remember the letter

though don’t recall MB stating he’d be doing something “interesting” which would lead one to believe Marvin could become the GM. In fact, the main theme from the letter was he wouldn’t be changing anything. Of course, there are some (such as myself) who are skeptical on the authenticy of this “letter” from Mike Brown.

Yea no.

Marvin will not be the GM lol

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

by C Byers on Dec 27, 2010 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

No he said that we was stuck with him (MB) and although

they are not going to hire a GM from the outside, there are going to be some changes in the offseason with the personnel but couldn’t discuss it.

by WHYUS!! on Dec 27, 2010 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

I hope so

but I don’t really buy the letter. I think that was made up (possibly by WDR) to stir up grieve. My hope is he hands over the reigns to his daughter, Katie, who will hire a GM.

by Blue Steel on Dec 27, 2010 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

That is what I hope for

My thoughts on it is that Katie needs a football mind and MB doesn’t trust anyone but 2 people and that is Brat and Marvin. I would think they would be the only candidates for the GM or football analyst job (lets call it assistant GM) for drafting and such. He wouldn’t be handling the negotiation of contracts or any financial decisions. Kinda like an assistant GM does. I’m actually afraid that this is what is going to happen and Brat will get the job as the “assistant GM” to either Mike or Katie. They will sign ML and Hire a new OC. That way everyone is satisfied. He would hope.
Or it could go the other way, but I doubt that, b/c ML love to coach rather than analyze and be someones puppet.
  But just a thought….

by WHYUS!! on Dec 27, 2010 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

that would be a pretty cushy job though

and a lot less stress, I’d think than being a head coach. With Marvin Lewis at 52 and doutful of being offered another HC job, it might behoove him to take that role.

Moisture is the essense of wetness, and wetness is the essense of beauty.

by Blue Steel on Dec 27, 2010 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah you bet

But there will probably be more to it though. I’d like Marvin in that role but Brat is obviously more close to MB than Marvin. There will be some type of change though. That is evident.

Not trying to be a nitpicky douche, but why do so many people think it's "intensive purposes?"

I’ve seen this conversation had multiple times. The correct phrase is “intents and purposes.”

Hm.

Why would you fault Simpson for two touchdowns? He still had to outrun the guy covering him and stay on his route, even if some of that was utilized by surprise. If anything, there should be no fault on surprise, as the Bengals like to do those kind of tricks from time to time (like that one punt fake where they don’t even have Huber on the field). Take it away and he still had 5 catches for 65 yards and a touchdown, pretty solid against the league’s best passing defense.

Not that you can take it away, mind.

Actually, let me re-emphasize that: the Bengals put up a 4 TD performance through the air against the league’s best passing defense. I’m not doubting them, though Green would be icing on the cake.

He’s quite vindicated now. No superstars needed.

I'm becoming more and more covinced that the only offensive positions you need to load up on with elite talent are QB and OL.

It seems like there are a lot of guys you can plug in at WR and RB that can get the job done, but you need a great line and a great QB to run the offense.

by sexsalad on Dec 26, 2010 11:36 PM EST reply actions

I'd add TE to that list.

As the Patriots have two good TEs in Hernandez and Gronkowski, the Colts have Dallas Clark, the Falcons have Tony Gonzalez, the Eagles have Brent Celek, the Packers, Jermichael Finley, etc.

Good QBs with good OLs can make RBs and WRs good, but TEs can help with the blocking, something the QB has no direct influence over, and be a safety valve on broken plays. Good thing the Bengals have one of these guys too!

We have

Coffman as a 2nd TE and he looked good when in.

More likely than not get ready for 4 wide like we ran alot more.

We need a:

(QB) DT, OG, FS, WR and maybe a new workhorse back to run between the tackles. (if ced wants out)

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

NFL is a business

Facts are if you are gonna pay someone a high salary, fans and management wants to see those guys on the field. Many a back up player has went on to stardom ,usually by going to another team and getting a shot.

I* am just happy to see us get back to last seasons formula for winning. Run the ball 40 times , even if we don’t have a huge running week . Running the ball opens up the passing game. It’s ashame it took losing our two diva receivers, Chad and T.O, to figuire out what needed to happen. Looks like we can go into next season with some hope again. I was really wondering during that 10 game losing streak.

by Yarin on Dec 27, 2010 12:15 AM EST reply actions

Run the ball

Point blank when they run the ball they operate not only better on offense but better on defense too! They got away from that this year… Carson looks better when they go to a run first offense! When Carson has less than 25 Attempts and they run the ball 35-40 times It more than likely a win! 3rd and longs turn into 3rd and managables and that helps Carson out alot!!! The Batman and Robin thing woulda worked as long as they stood run first, the purpose of it was to give Carson another target not make T.O the main target! That’s what wound up happening at the first Browns game OCT 3rd and it’s been down hill ever since. In reality, I like Chad and what he’s done for the Bengals is he willing to be a role player though. Stretch the defense and let Carson eat up the middle with the younger guys! Or will we have to part ways like the Patroits did with Randy Moss? I hope not, next year would not be the same without him! Next years draft will give us more Depth! The need to go ahead and clean house on players like Odom, Roy, Dhani, and maybe Tank (not quite sold on that yet!) Say what you will about Geathers but he stays on the field and is a good run stopper, just take him out on passing downs lol!!!

by Dwight Carter on Dec 27, 2010 12:05 PM EST reply actions

re: Chad

i’m more than convinced Chad would be a role player, but only if we’re WINNING. That’s all the guy wants is to win and a chance at a SB, if it means he blocks for 80% of the time and we win while he has 5 grabs for 50-70 yds a game he’d be fine. he wants to win, always has and always will…..

oh and another thing

he could care less about the $ he makes as long as he can pay his fines and have nice things (which he has plenty of $ as of now to do). After football he’ll still be OchoCinco and still make $ off all the other bullshit he’s into, but for now as far as football is concerned- they guy just wants to win and have a CHANCE to play for a SB. Like him or hate him, he wants to be a Bengal, how many times and for how many players could you say that for in the past?
