Post-Game Open Thread: Saints Beat Bengals 34-30 With Last Minute Touchdown

No one expected the Bengals to make much of a game against the New Orleans Saints, last year's Super Bowl Champion on a four-game winning streak, having beaten most of their opponents by at least two scores, save for Thanksgiving night. Yet, the Bengals never allowed New Orleans to take off. Cincinnati held the Saints to a 13-6 lead at half time and even held onto a three-point lead late in the game.

The Bengals offense came alive in force in the second half, scoring three straight touchdowns and a field goal in a 24-point half; Cincinnati's offense didn't record a turnover or kick a punt. In total, the Bengals offense reached the red zone six times against the New Orleans Saints, scoring only six points on three first half red zone appearances but scoring all touchdowns in the second half.

In the end, the thing that killed the Bengals on Sunday was defense. The Saints, having a very good offense that shouldn't be disregarded as anything less, recorded 436 total yards on offense. It was a game that the Bengals defense allowed Drew Brees 313 yards passing, Chris Ivory 117 yards rushing and Robert Meachem 106 yards receiving. The Bengals defense allowed the Saints to record five plays of 40 yards or more, two of which resulted in touchdowns. Six of New Orleans drives went 65 yards or more, all resulting in the Saints 34 points Sunday.

Notes:

  • The Cincinnati Reds have won five games since the last time the Cincinnati Bengals won.
  • Carlos Dunlap recorded his second multiple sack game of the year, giving him 4.5 on the year. Dunlap has recorded 3.5 quarterback sacks in the past two games.
  • Pat Sims was the only other defensive lineman to knock Drew Brees down.
  • Quan Cosby had two returns of over 10 yards; 11 yards and 19 yards. Cosby's previous long punt return was 12 yards.
  • Rookie place kicker Clint Stitser recorded three field goals in his NFL debut, including a 47-yard conversion that gave the Bengals a lead late in the game.
  • Carson Palmer didn't throw an interception -- first game without an interception since October 24 against the Atlanta Falcons.
  • Bernard Scott rushed for a season high 43 yards rushing. It's also the third most yards rushing in his career.
  • Jermaine Gresham, after breaking Tony McGee's record for most receptions by a rookie tight end, caught the two-point conversion to tie the score at 27 late in the game.
  • Reggie Nelson recorded his first interception as a Cincinnati Bengals.
  • Geno Atkins recorded a half-sack against the Saints, giving him 1.5 quarterback sacks on the season. Atkins has split every sack this year.
  • Stitser may have converted every field goal, he was less than desirable on kickoffs. The starting field position for the Saints were beyond the 30-yard line on five of his seven kickoffs.
  • What were the Bengals doing on the final possession? After Brian Leonard picked up 14 yards to the Saints 37-yard line, the Bengals tried to get to the line to spike the football. However, they wasted at least six seconds by not calling a timeout immediately. Instead of having at least 15 seconds left in the game, the Bengals were left with eight seconds. Not that it matters, Palmer was sacked on the final play of the game so it ended up being mute anyway.
  • Chad Ochocinco had three of the Bengals five longest plays -- all of which were over 20 yards.

Cincinnati's loss extends their losing streak to nine games, which ties them for the second-longest losing streak in franchise history and most during Marvin Lewis' head coaching career. The Bengals will face the Pittsburgh Steelers next week.

When he gets the benefit of good play calling, Benson still looks great.

THe first part of that sentence is pretty important. You don’t run a power back on stretch plays against the Saints. You don’t have to run a dive up the middle on EVERY 2nd down. No one is falling for the unbalanced line anymore. You don’t have to use the same tired “trick play” bringing Peko in as a fullback whenever you’re on the goal line (yes I know it worked for once of his TD’s today, but it’s a total bust most of the time).

Scott is incredibly hot and cold. He definitely has another gear Benson doesn’t have, but he can’t run between the tackles to save his life and I don’t think he could carry the ball 15 times two weeks in a row with his build.

If you think Benson still looks great lol

He proved today how bad he really is. Ppl blamed the line yet Scott comes in and sets his career high in rushing in 6 attempts. I can’t recall more than 5 out of 237 rushing attempts Benson has gotten a first down. B Scott opens the field for Carson. Not even a comparison. Benson is now a second tier back at best.

Putting Peko in isn't a trick play,

It’s a power play that when you have a true fullback you use it. They just use Peko as a fullback b/c of his size. That’s all

The problem is...

you have almost zero data to make that comment on. This is Scott’s second year in the league and he hasn’t been given a chance to prove himself on the field. Last year when Benson was out with the groin strain Scott had three consecutive games of extended play
13 carries against Pitt
21 carries against Oak
18 carries against Cle
Against Pitt he did exceptionally well considering they had the best run defense in the league. And against Oak he had 120 yards. Now, can he be the workhorse of a team like Benson is? Probably not. But Benson isn’t doing much better at it right now than Bernard would. Everytime the OC gives Scott a chance he does well. But when you sit a guy for like 8 straight games with only one carry on bad offensive schemes what do you expect to happen? He ran 6 for 35 the first game of the year. This guy is a game changer but the OC isn’t giving him a chance.

Reading is good...

Palmer played flawless today. With a brainless coach, OC, rookie TE and slot receiver and declining RB with no big play ability easy to defend he is doing great.

Yes! Luck would've been perfect!

I don’t get the disconnect that occurs here. Benson struggles b/c of the offensive line. When Palmer struggles, it’s all Palmer. When Palmer plays well, he still played poorly b/c the Bengals lose.

I don’t get it I don’t get it I don’t get I don’t get it.

How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his children?

by Grizzlyfox on Dec 5, 2010 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

Although his rating was good that doesn't tell the whole story. It's the little things that he does/doesn't do that makes a big difference in the games.

Listening to Lap and Brad on the radio gives you a different perspective on the whole game. Especially when one of the analysts (Lap) is the biggest Bengal fan there is. he knows a lot about what should be done and what shouldn’t. I must “rec” that all fans listen to 700 wlw for the games at least once. You’ll get what I’m talking about. My words can’t really explain it but hearing it will.

Geno Atkins is the main reason we get presure on the QB

Its time to start him, any pressure we got today including Dunlaps sack was down t o Geno taking the guard and planting him in Brees face. Dunlap also looks a keeper who may stop us going DE in the 1st. How about Ryan Fairly DT Auburn to rotate with Geno,Peko and Sims?

Yep, and it shows it on both sides of the ball

A play-off bound team – who had something to play for, but in the end didn’t need to force it – ultimately played hardball on a fourth down play in the Bengals backyard. If that’s not the biggest poke in the eye to Mike Brown and the rest of the family, I don’t know what is.

When it comes down to it, the excuses are the same every week. Nine defeats in a row don’t lie.

It's Mike Brown that keeps these guys.

In the past I really don’t recall Mike Brown firing anyone on the staff that wasn’t close to the end of their contract. Bruce Coslett quit b/c he couldn’t take the pressure. Everyone else, had one or no years left.

by WHYUS!! on Dec 5, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

We blame the coaches for not being on the field and making the mistakes.

But I’ll be damned to say that Brown keeps the players around. Coaches draw players here, especially with a terrible owner.

By the way, Josh is talking about players. It wasn’t clear, I know, but once that’s said, it makes his point good.

all of them from the start of the original post on this subject. Look above.

by WHYUS!! on Dec 5, 2010 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

I think that's on the front office...

…but at some point, you have to look at the way the players (on a clearly “talented” roster) are responding to the coaching. The well-coached team finds the way to win. The team with gaps doesn’t. The Bengals have proven they’re in the latter category.

Of course, if you offer a guy X million dollars to coach the team, he’s probably more concerned by his bank balance than the assembled playing staff on and off the field.

Personally, where this franchise is at the moment, the players need a change. And some, but not all of the roster also needs a change. You need 53 guys who can potentially contribute. I don’t know any other team that would have maintained loyalty to the likes of Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell. They’re not producing. One’s not even active (or useful enough to contribute on special teams). There was a mistake made in the draft with Simpson (and maybe even Caldwell), but rather than looking for fresh talent, the coaching staff aren’t man enough to admit their mistake or to live with the potential consequences, maybe.

We’ll see in the first week in January. Maybe Mike Brown will be conducting the season review by himself – that’s if he himself has the willingness to take some sort of lead.

Yet another dazzling display of ineptitude finding a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Just when I thought that the Bengals have found every way possible to lose, they dug deep and found another way to get it done… Brilliant…

Ocho is probably the most passionate un-Bengalized player on this roster.

With the possible exception of Peko. I’ll give a lot of the young guys a pass – Shipley, Gresham, Dunlap, Atkins. But other than that Ocho is the only veteran I really see fired up week in and week out. The guy wants to win no matter what – I think it would be a mistake to let him walk. I mean look at Benson. The guy scores two touchdowns, one that ties the game with minutes to play, and he could not have possibly looked more bored. He didn’t even bother to say anything to the rest of the offensive players on the field. Just jogged off and went and sat by himself with a scowl.
