Mike Brown Speaks Up... Kind Of
A tip of the hat to JamesShively for bringing this to my attention on his fan post earlier tonight. Check his post out here.
Today, on Lance McAlister's blog, Lance wrote about a letter that Mike Brown sent to a season ticket holder in response to a concerned letter from that season ticket holder. The letter from Brown reads:
I cannot give you the response I suspect you would most like to hear. I'm afraid you are stuck with me in my present role, and a general manager brought in from the outside is not in the plans. I accept that your criticism is sincere, and I wish you well personally. We are working as hard as we can to return to and surpass the contending status we had as recently as last season."
Sincerely,
Mike Brown
President

Mike Brown could totally win back the city of Cincinnati...
if he stood up, admitted his way of doing business is not working, and brings in a proven commodity to run his team.
He’s not evil, he’s just not a good GM.

I love Pete too
As a Cincy kid in the 70’s, I learned about “hustle” and work ethic from him. Say what you want about his personal life, he worked hard on the field.
Pete Rose
is still loved in Cincy, unless something has changed that I’m not aware of….furthermore he’s been villified by MLB for so long and still ins’t allowed in the HoF, but IMO some of the stuff that PLAYERS did WHILE PLAYING is worse than better FOR your team. Steroids give you a clear competitive advantage, and if i’m not mistaken that was one of the main sticking points to Pete’s Ban- that by being manager he had an opportunity to influence the outcome of the game w/a competitive advantage….but he never bet against the Reds, only for them so that holds no weight IMO. Pete Rose was and always will be a Hero to Cincinnati

I don't want to sound like an ass but...
His way of doing business is working. He’s making a ton of money and that’s the goal of his business. It’s clear he doesn’t care about winning. I know what you mean though. He sucks!
You're spot on
that’s the unfortunate thing about this. Winning doesn’t equate to profit for him.
Moisture is the essense of wetness, and wetness is the essense of beauty.
Listen, Mike is not a bad guy, but damn he's a terrible owner.
I remember seeing him doing that!!
That’s hilarious! At least this guy is competitive enough to want to win!
BTW,
is this why Miami and Kentucky teams suck too?
In the picture above in the post it states that both coaches are listening to Mike Brown
Miami
got most improved team this year…went from 1-11 to MAC Champions (15 total, most in conference). For anyone who watched the game, that was a CRAZY way to win the game!
go Redhawks! Atleast one of my teams is a champion!

Fuckity fuck fuck
that is all…
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, is just a freight train coming your way...
@btcoop71
Mikey is doing it his way and nothing we can do about it.
bratkowski will be in the booth next season. Marvin will be worrying about Chad pushing off and forgeting to manage the game clock and misplace his red flag.
Only chance we have is to pool 100,000 ppl together and put in 9k each and buy the team and hire a real gm.

"Contending status"
Kind of says it all, doesn’t it? Not “win the Super Bowl” or “build a consistent winner” but to get back to “contending status”…what the f**k ever that is…
My thoughts exactly!
All these teams owners and FO reply in different ways to different situations. All of the replies are about winning and not
We are working as hard as we can to return to and surpass the contending status we had as recently as last season."Where is the winning statement? Where is the ambition to win? It’s just to contend.
Killing me...
Apparently nothing can embarass this man. Do you really think this guy has a good heart? I’m lost. I love this team for the city it represents, but this is just wrong. All that is left is hit this man in the pocketbook. As hard as it is we must stop supporting this team. I was fortunate to see the good teams of the eighties, but it’s hard when you can’t pass your love for a team on to your kids because all they see is a loser. Mike Brown is killing me………….
I just hope that the team stay in cincy... fan from the 80s...
is not easy to get a jersey from mexico… is not easy to be a fan where everybody is cheering for cowboys and steelers… and i do not why… I love the bengals….

You guys deserve better
I don’t know what to say. Watching from the outside I would almost be happy if he were to suddenly walk in front of an oncoming bus. I can’t imagine what you are going through. I would completely understand if every game was blacked out for the next few seasons. Of course, that would probably prompt him to move the team. You have my condolences.

Winning in the NFL is hard enough
Winning with mike brown as GM is impossible
This man has the most warped sense of his own abilities to run a team and what it means to own an NFL team and put out a good product for his fans.
It’s crazy that he never has a moment where he thinks to himself “hmmm, what are the steelers, ravens, patriots, chargers, giants, eagles, and packers doing different than me that allows them to be competitive every year??”………that’s right, they have general managers and full fledged scouting departments! What a novel idea!
Hi fans it Brandon Roy.
And ME.....LaMarcus Aldridge
Mike Brown is an obstinate prick.
Thats not a theme thats a fact. Worst Owner/GM in the NFL…Fact. Im not surprised by this comment he is blind to his own lack of ability, unfortunately our lack of his ignorance leads us down the path of pain in hoping to see things improve with this team.
"brought in from the outside..." ?
Should it be important that MB said that someone from the outside is not an option?

Marvin's ability to evaluate talent...
leaves a lot to be desired. I don’t want him as our GM.
I don't know where people get this from.
Considering our past few drafts, I’d say Marvin is at the very least decent at it. Sure, FA has had some busts (Odom, Bryant), but I chalk that up into not having enough scouts to focus on both the draft and free agency simultaneously.
Joe Reedy: "Supposedly Marvin could not find his flag to challenge the call. I am not kidding. #bengals"
I don't know
How many impact players has he drafted? It’s looking like our 2010 draft was very good and Hall/Joseph were great picks but other than that, I’m at a bit of a loss.
I think that they did a good job of finding talented players.
However, I think that talent has been mismanaged or mis-coached to a degree. Carson Palmer is a prime example of a very talented player that has been broken down by our system. We saw lots of progress in his first few seasons. Now his more recent seasons we have seen a regression in his play and decision making. And part of that problem can be attributed to a shoddy offensive line, one area that has seen too little improvement. In fact, our defensive line’s inability to get to the QB has been a recurring theme too. If I have one complaint about Mike Brown, it is that he hasn’t addressed the trenches… where the games are really won. Whether it is players or the position coaches(the first place I would start), something is not working there.
I cried a little after reading this
well more than a little. I just want us to be great, and not in a lightening bolt flash, but great in legacy great, great in sustained great, great in what I know we could be if we didn’t have chains weighing us down like the front office is.
And i was just told by someone who is in control of that possibility of greatness, that it won’t likely happen
Heeeeey, Ochocinco, he's a good guy, no?
Sigh.
I really wish I was a fan of a different team.
I'm sorry But if he puts these same coaches out there next year
My strike starts. Whether the players strike or not. If Brat is still there, I won’t be. I think a lot of fans will give up on their season tickets too if he doesn’t make some changes.
The problem is that he has no incentive to change.
He makes his money either way. As a Bengals fan living in DC, I hear/read a lot about the Redskins. It’s the same thing with Dan Snyder. Since he took over the Redskins, they have not been a good team. But they are also one of the most profitable franchises in the NFL, so Snyder just keeps on being stupid, because he can afford to be.
Mike Brown wants to do things his way. Until his decisions hit him in his wallet, nothing will change.
What if he couldn't fill up half the stadium all year?
Would that be enough of a loss to cause change?
regulard tickets are split % to the league and owners
He makes his $ with the corporate luxery suites/boxes and on concessions (portion of concessions also gets taken away) but my point is he makes his $ in gaurnteeed chunks (ie Luxury suites) and off concessions (which won’t stop until NOBODY goes to games).

Every Bengals Fan's Question to Mike Brown should be..
Please give me a reason why I should stay a fan of this team.
There isn't one?
I certainly blame no Lions fans for jumping ship as long as Millen was there and if Brown does hire a GM and that person turns out to be Millen, you can be as sure as hell that I’d be out of here.
Joe Reedy: "Supposedly Marvin could not find his flag to challenge the call. I am not kidding. #bengals"
Maybe he's grooming Katie to be GM
she’s already negotiating contracts. You see things could be worse.

"When you chart (the plays) and see where it broke down there was no common theme to it." - Bob Bratkowski
I post this to ignite people's outrage and promote a boycott
1. It took 314 games for Brown to lose 200. The previous record, Reedy notes, was held by the original owner of the Atlanta Falcons, Rankin Smith, who did it in 327 games. (The third-shortest road to 200 losses was by Art Rooney of the Steelers, which is a pretty big surprise considering Pittsburgh has the most Super Bowl titles).
2. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers began playing in 1995, but both franchises have more wins than Mike Brown has had, despite the fact they’ve been playing for four fewer seasons. Jacksonville has 129 franchise victories, Carolina has 118.
3. Brown’s teams haven’t won a playoff game during his tenure. Every other team that has existed since 1991 has won at least one postseason game. (The last playoff win for Cincinnati was in 1990, the year before Brown took over. The Texans haven’t won a playoff game, but they only joined the league in 2002.)
4. The team has finished over .500 twice since 1991.
5. Twice is also the amount of times Cincinnati has made the playoffs in Brown’s 20 seasons at the helm. (We’re assuming the 2-6 Bengals don’t make it this year.) The Detroit Lions have made it six times in that stretch.
6. In those 20 years, the Bengals have ranked in the top 10 on offense or defense just five times. They’ve been ranked No. 22 or below 18 times.
7. The Bengals have been outscored by 1,488 points during Brown’s reign. They’ve only outscored opponents in five of Brown’s full 19 seasons.
8. Brown was the fastest to 200 losses, but the slowest to 100 wins. It took the team 288 games to get to the century mark, the slowest in NFL history.
9. Since 1991 there have been 13 times when an NFL team began the season 0-8. The Bengals have done it four of those times.
10. The Bengals have had a winless October in eight of Brown’s 20 seasons. His teams started 0-21 in the month before getting its first win in the month on Oct. 19, 1995.
Last spring Brown was at it again, this time as one of the only voices against lengthening the regular season. Brown’s concern about a potential move to an 18-game regular season (while cutting back to two preseason games) wasn’t based on player safety; rather, it had to do with weather considerations. "If you were giving me my choice," Brown told a stunned audience of 50 owners and club executives, according to two witnesses, "I’d rather sell an extra preseason game in August than another regular season game in January. It’s bad for us to sell tickets in the cold. My fans would rather have the game when it’s warm."
To Brown’s credit, he announced at last week’s owners’ meetings in Atlanta that he had changed his mind – he’d rather have a ninth regular season contest at Paul Brown Stadium than a second preseason home game. There was just one caveat: no home games in January. When NFL schedule czar Howard Katz assured Brown, "You can be away the last month of the season," the owner enthusiastically agreed.
Said one NFC owner: "There are 31 teams who’d rather play at home down the stretch … and then there’s Mike Brown."

Man! I feel tired
We are getting no where with this team. I agree, boycott may be the only option. I been a fan since the Ickey shuffle however the team doesn’t play for the fans. I think Carson wants out. Marvin has lost the locker room, TO is baffled and Chad has Ochcinco’s. If Bob is back and we don’t have a GM, I’m done. And every fan should be. It’s tiring being the laughing stock of the NFL. The team suppose to back the fans and I’m really getting tired of defending this franchise, who has no clue on winning. Mike Brown has said enough he doesn’t no any better. If you try something several times and have the same result or worst, changes should be noteable, but not to us. Mike Brown is a crook. And it’s a damn, shame. Guy’s a new coach or new quarter back will not be the answer. This needs a serious management change from above and if this is the case without considering hiring a GM, he has made his case and he isn’t going to bugde, however I won’ t either, If I see the same faces and not overhaul to help the fans and this team. I’m done. FUCK, MIKE BROWN.

Aside from all this I will still never be able to stop being a fan.
So Mike Brown has me trapped in misery with no way out. i can’t find it in me to just walk away and not care anymore.
Rec'd
Not because I like what it says (we’re historically bad under Brown’s reign), but because we should all read this and be very, very angry about it. This is terrible.

Wait a Minute Now....
In the last few days we have seen this, along with stories of Tenable Security Guards tearing some dude’s bag partially and making him leave the stadium for a shirt denouncing Mike Brown. Who’s to say some dork in his mom’s basement isnt making all of this up just to stir the pot. I am not saying this letter from Mikey isnt true, but we at least need to consider that this may be fabricated. It just doesnt seem like he would sign off on a letter to a season ticket holder with only “Mike Brown-President”….My first instinct when reading this, was that it was fake…and unless I see an actual copy of this, I’m sticking w/ that assumption

who cares about whether or not the letter is true..
After 20+ years of Mike Brown’s nonsense there are plenty of other factual reasons to turn your back on this miserable franchise.

You're all missing the point here...
Mike Brown will NOT be reasoned with. I understand that the upset fan took his frustrations to the top to Brown, but with Mr. B, it will ALWAYS fall on deaf ears. The case must be taken to Katie and Troy Blackburn. There seems to be some evidence that they are looking for changes to be made that Mike is “unwilling” to make. The fans should take their pleas to the Blackburns to try and grab the ear of Mike Brown. Use threats of cancelling tickets, boycotting games and buying of merch, if need be. Though the thought of them running the franchise scares me to an extent, they are the only hope that we have for Mike to make changes (outside of Roger Goodell). From now on, the fans should voice their opinions to them, not Mike. Write in the letter to them that since Mike Brown doesn’t have the decency to properly and openly address the fans, that you (the fans) don’t have the respect to even address him.
In defense of Mike Brown (I know, I know), keep in mind that probably part of the reason that this letter was so trite and short is because he’s receiving boatloads of these and is responding to some, most or all. Also, though this is a reach, keep in mind that franchises rarely tip their hand to what their true offseason plans are, especially while the current season isn’t finished. Either way, “appeals to good nature” and venting of frustrations MUST NOW BE TAKEN TO THE BLACKBURNS. IT IS NOW THE ONLY HOPE FOR US FANS FOR THE CHANGES WE WANT.
