Report: Place kicker Dave Rayner signs with the Bengals

On Friday we wrote that the Bengals had worked out two place kickers in the eventual departure Shayne Graham, who has held place kicking duties with the Bengals for seven long seasons. Later that night, Joe Reedy writes, Dave Rayner's agent announced that "his client has been signed".

It's not unprecedented that the Bengals could have two place kickers on roster if they, out of loyalty, elect to give Graham a chance; who in turn would have to significantly reduce his annual salary well below what he "earned" last year on a one-year franchise tag contract.

However, I wouldn't expect the Bengals to be complacent with place kickers. This offseason represents a collection of recognizable free agent place kickers, ranging from Jason Elam, Jay Feely, Sebastian Janikowski, Olindo Mare, Neil Rackers, Jeff Reed and Matt Stover.

Neglected area.....

I’ve been sick of the short kick offs for years. We allways seem to give our opponents an advantage in the field position battles. Anyone know what Raynor’s kick offs are like?

RE:

Good point.

Rayner’s career on kickoffs are 64.3 yards per kick including a 66.8-yard average in six kickoffs with the Bengals in 2008. Of 206 career kickoffs, 16 were touchbacks — translates to 8% of his kickoffs.

Comparatively speaking. Shayne Graham averaged 61.8 yards per kick in his career with a 63.3-yard average in 2009. Of 567 career kickoffs, 45 were touchbacks — translates to 8% of his kickoffs.

I'd still like to see Art-O-Matic Carmody...

No reason we couldn’t pluck somebody from Arena Ball, right? It’s a kicker, for Pete’s sake!

Dave Rayner

Unfortunately I think he’s a waste of the cash money go on the youtube and watch some of his kicks hes got the field goal leg and pretty solid technique. its his technique on kickoffs i worry about. the second he looses control of his anchor foot bam hyper extended knee. maybe get Huber to do some kickoffs hes got a decent form and distance oh boy the boy can kick a ball a mile.
