Andre Caldwell vs Rookie WR
via www.ohio-share.coxnewsweb.com
Every Bengals fan agrees that we need some new life injected into the WRs. What I dont understand is why most fans seem to be soured on Andre Caldwell's potential. I have heard people say "Draft a receiver to play opposite of Chad, and let Quan Cosby play the slot." What about Andre Caldwell? Just forget him? Caldwell is far from a bust. I would like to remind people that this was Caldwell's 2nd season in the NFL. He was a 3rd round compensentory (free) pick. I looked at all of the WRs drafted in the first 3 rounds in 2008 to see where he ranks.
This past year, Andre caught 51 balls playing the slot most of the time. The slot is usually played by veteran players who know how to read coverages and run very good routes. Only 3 receivers drafted in 2008 caught more passes. Sure he disapeared in the final 6 weeks, but he hasnt played this many games in his life. He wore down just like the team did down the stretch. Oh yeah he did fumble 4 times this season, but Desean Jackson has fumbled 7 times in his career, Eddie Royal (3), Jordy Nelson (3). It happens to wide receivers. Did you know Calvin Johnson has fumbled 7 times in 3 seasons? Ted Ginn jr has fumbled 10 times over that same time, both were top 10 picks.
I'm all for drafting a WR, but I'm not sure we need one in the first round. We need help next season, not in 2 or 3 seasons. I gathered some stats from every WR drafted in the first 3 rounds of the last 3 years, because thats likely where we will see the Bengals draft a WR in the 2010 draft. This is what I found...
If we draft a WR in the...
1st Round - Rookie WRs drafted in the 1st round have averaged 39 receptions for 560 yards.
+ The Bengals could get lucky and draft a Dwayne Bowe ( 70 Rec, 995 Yards, 5 TDs as a Rookie)
- Or we could get unlucky and draft a Craig Davis ( 20 Receptions, 188 yards, 1 TD as a Rookie)
2nd Round - Rookie WRs drafted in the 2nd round have averaged 24 receptions for 374 yards.
+ Eddie Royal (91 rec, 980 yards, 5 TD) Desean Jackson (62 rec, 912 yards, 2 TD) Donnie Avery (53 rec, 674, 3 TD)
- Dwayne Jarrett (6 rec, 73 yrds) Brian Robiskie (7 rec, 106 yrds) Malcolm Kelly (3 rec, 18 yrds)
3rd Round - Rookie WRs drafted in the 3rd round have averaged 11 receptions for 141 yards.
+ Laurent Robinson (37 rec, 437 yrds, TD) James Jones (47 rec, 676 yrds 2 TDs) Mike Wallace (39 rec, 756 yrd, 6TDs)
- Ramses Barden (1 rec, 16 yrds) Jason Hill (1 rec, 6 yrds) 12 third round WRs caught less than 10 balls as a Rookie in the past 3 seasons! *cough* Jerome Simpson *cough*
I looked at what kind of stats WRs usually put up in their 2nd seasons.
Andre Caldwell - 51 receptions, 432 yards, 3 TDs (2nd season in NFL)
2nd year WRs averaged 28 receptions for 357 yards.
2nd year WRs that were drafted in the 3rd round averaged 21 receptions for 270 yards
*This shows me that Andre Caldwell isn't your average young receiver, he is ahead of the pack.
So of course I checked out what WRs usually put up in their 3rd seasons in the NFL.
3rd year WRs averaged 34 receptions for 460 yards.
3rd year WRs who caught more than 50 balls in the their 2nd season averaged 65 receptions for 812 yards.
* tell me you wouldnt take those numbers from Caldwell next season?
Comparison: Andre Caldwell and Steve Smith (NYG)
Steve Smith was drafted late in the 2nd round by the Giants. (8 rec, 63 yrds as a rookie)
Andre Caldwell was drafted late in the 3rd round by the Bengals. (11 rec, 78 yrds as a rookie)
2nd Season : Smith (57 rec, 574 yards, 1 TD) Caldwell ( 51 rec, 432 yards, 3 TDs)
3rd Season : Smith (107 rec, 1220 yards, 7 TDs) Caldwell ?
* I'm not saying Caldwell is going to catch 100 balls next season, he wont be the go to guy. But expect his numbers to look like - 3rd year WRs who caught more than 50 balls in the their 2nd season averaged 65 receptions for 812 yards.
So do we want to take a chance on a rookie WR to save our passing offense?
Or can 3rd year man Andre Caldwell be the answer as our #2?

It all depends on Brat and Palmer.
If Brat can design plays to get him more involved, and if Palmer can get the time to throw to him, then yeah, he could be a solid WR.
If you don't live like you wanna, you live like you shouldn't
I'm not saying we should cut Caldwell....
he deserves every opportunity to start but it never hurts to bring in competition. Chad has 2 years left on his contract and just think how terrible our WR corps will if either he or Caldwell get hurt.
Caldwell is a good young WR
but, i think what we saw late in the season was that Caldwell isn’t ready for the responsibility a no.2 WR has on their shoulders. I think he’ll end up being that no.2 WR, but he doesn’t seem ready for the role and will thrive more in a no.3 role. In fact, if we can have Caldwell in at no.3 we know we have a good WR depth for next year.
Nice stats
I’m not that excited about drafting a WR round 1 either and if Caldwell progresses like we hope, then he’s going to be a great target for Carson. I do think that he played his best football last year when Chris Henry was drawing attention away from him. That’s why I’m all for signing a free agent WR this next year, instead of trying to draft one.
This is our year!
i really hope we don't draft a receiver in the first round.
we need somebody to make an immediate impact so if the guy we draft turns out to be jerome simpson, we’re fucked.
i would be more than happy to give up a first and third for marshall. we don’t have too many holes to fill in the draft so we’d have to strike gold with our second and fourth round picks, but i think marshall is well worth the money we would have paid for those two draft picks.
i really like caldwell a lot… i do not like coles. since coles makes more money than andre, if we get marshall, coles would have to be the slot guy. who knows, maybe he’ll perform better there.

+1
I’d be too happy if Mikey did that. Any chance he reads the blogs?

Imagine this for the Bengals:
Marshall and Scheffler for a 1st, 2nd, and 5th. I’d be happy with that.
If you don't live like you wanna, you live like you shouldn't
Coles
I definitely see Coles as bait for Marshall or Malcolm Floyd. Coles ihas a reasonable contract for the next 3 years, and teams like SD which have a lot of free agents could use a polished WR with a few years on the contract to get some stability from which to bargain with remaining free agents.
i dont see it
Why pay Coles that money when Floyd will make that much?

Floyd could want more, at least up front
plus the Chargers are going to be negotiating with a lot of free agents this year, guys like Vincent Jackson, Marcus McNeil and Shawn Merriman, plus they need a Running back, it possible that they let Jackson go for COles and a 5th round Pick to get a guy under contrct to move forward.
all those guys are restricted if im not mistaken
so there wont be much to negotiate, just give them thier tenders, and match if you need to. right?

Unless they cost a 1st and 3rd round pick
SO that works for V Jackson or B Marshall, if the Bengals are willing to give up 2 picks.
The other option is to trade for their rights which could cost less in the case of Marshall or Floyd
Quit smokin crack!
First, there is almost no way Jackson is going to be available.
Second, To get him you would have to give up essentially the exact same that you are giving up for Marshall. That means a first, third, and then maybe Coles as bait.
Caldwell is fine
Caldwell had a solid sophomore year. It typically takes WRs about three years to develop and it seems he is right on track. I fully expect him to be a solid contributor next year, hauling in 70+ passes in whatever role he is assigned. Does he need to work on holding onto the ball? Of course, but so do a lot of guys on the Bengals. Does he need to work on getting open downfield? Yes—and he has the speed to do it, I think just a matter of development and training.
With regards to drafting a receiver in the first round. If there is anything Bengals fans should know—FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS ARE FAR FROM A SURE THING! The Bengals should draft the best player on the board. If it’s a WR, great. If it’s a Safety, even better, if it’s a D-lineman, rock on!
With regards to free agents. The odds of the Bengals signing a premier free agent are pretty low. Its not in the Bengals nature—and tigers don’t change their stripes.
More likely, we sign a mid-level contributor. I’d be happy if they went after Breaston, Floyd, or Hixon and then possibly cut Coles. They are younger and have more long-term potential. Unless Coles steps it up significantly—his contract makes him a liability.

I think TO is a real possiblity
TO can come in for 1 year and help. He had 800 yards for Buffalo, and can allow Caldwell to continue to develop before taking over as the #2 guy. Even still I would expect the Bengals to use a poick in the first 3 rounds for a guy who can be a number one guy (if that guy is not Simpson). The Bengals don’t sign top guys, but they did almost sign Warren Sapp, and did sign Coles, which were declining stars. as was Hardy. TO fits the type of guy the Bengals do sign, and shouldn’t be stupid enough to sign him long term.
I also think a trade for V Jackson or Marshall would be well worth a 1st round pick.
I think that we could get floyd for COles and swapping 1st round picks which would shore up the number 2 spot until we draft and develop someone to fill #1 role. Iwould definitely lose Coles if I were the Bengals. He did not earn his money and it could be better spent elsewhere.
I would take TO and put Caldwell in the slot
Draft Gresham with our 1st round. that would be our new offense
