Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Prospect Watch: Brandon Graham

Brandon-graham_medium via www.nfldraftdog.com

Brandon Graham Height: 6-1 | Weight: 263 | Position:DE | College: Michigan

Overview

Graham's play was a bright spot for the 5-7 Wolverines. He earned multiple All-American mentions after leading the nation in tackles for loss (26) and recording 10.5 sacks, missing out on Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year to Penn State DT Jared Odrick.

After playing sparingly in 11 games as a true freshman, Graham made his name known among Big Ten quarterbacks by making 8.5 sacks in a part-time starting role in 2006. Given the chance to play every down as a junior, he took his game to another level by making 20 tackles for loss, including 10 sacks.

Graham probably won't hit the 6-foot-2 mark on the tape, but some teams are finding short, strong and high-motor ends are successful pass rushers. He has the agility and hustle to join former college defensive ends like Larry English, Elvis Dumervil and former Michigan teammate Lamarr Woodley in successfully transitioning to linebacker in 3-4 schemes.

Analysis

Pass rush: Relentless rusher able to pressure the quarterback lining up on the strong or weak side. Lines up at five-technique in some passing situations. Uses his strength, balance and lack of height to get under shoulder pads of tackle. Strong, violent hands to beat his man straight-out or disengage. Lacks a consistent counter move. Has an inside spin move but rarely shows it. Despite his stout build, Graham drops into zone coverage easily and shows some fluidity in space. Backpedal is slow, as expected, but he will still get a shot as a linebacker for a 3-4 team. Lines up wide so he can turn the corner against slower tackles, will struggle to do so against NFL tackles.

Run defense: Can punch the tackle to disengage or maintain the angle to force the action inside when run plays are coming his way. Occasionally gets skinny to penetrate on inside runs. Stays home to contain, watch for bootlegs and stop reverses. Must be more consistent using his hands to defeat cut blocks, although he can still make the tackle after a cut as he recovers fairly well. Has a good motor, works hard to get down the line on runs away from him. Lacks elite speed to chase down NFL backs consistently.

Explosion: Good first step off the ball and pounds his man's jersey on contact when in pure pass-rush mode. Has some pop off the snap when looking for the run, and is able to stand his ground against much bigger linemen. Brings full effort from the first quarter to the fourth, and smells weakness in his opponent. Closes quickly and explodes into the quarterback on a sack.

Strength: Capable of using his lack of height to his advantage, maintaining leverage to hold his ground on the edge. Stacks the tight end and disrupts plays when one-on-one. Can be engulfed by bigger tackles, losing sight of the ball.

Tackling: Above-average arm length allows him to disengage and wrap on running plays to his side, as well as chase down ballcarriers from behind. Does not meet his feet going through trash, making it hard for him to make the tackle when crashing down inside. Stays square and low in space, breaking down to tackle the ballcarrier.

Intangibles: Stepped up his role as a senior from leading by example and becoming a vocal leader who encourages and gets after teammates. Missed two games in 2008 with leg infection. Charged with disorderly conduct in July 2008 for playing music too loud, and failed to show up for trial. Charges were eventually dismissed, and a bench warrant was terminated.

Expect Graham to be drafted somewhere between picks 16-26. I wouldnt be suprised if the Bengals take a good look at him. He can play Left Defensive End (Geathers spot), and looks like he can play some LB. I still believe Marvin Lewis would like his David Pollack type of player. If we drafted him, Graham and Fanene could play LE, cut Robert Geathers and save a few million. Then  after Maulauga moves to MLB, Graham may be the SLB Marvin Lewis dreams of.

Agreed

but, we do need to address our pass rushing somehow

This is our year!

Our pass rush in my opinion will be addressed with

MJ and Odom.

Ok then let's just throw him out

all I said is that we cant trust him

I wrote in the OP what we would do with Graham

www.fantasydaddy.com

by Joe Goodberry on Feb 8, 2010 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

Well we can't trust Palmer either, he's on the hot seat. Doesn't mean we're gonna draft a QB in the 1st round.

We have bigger holes to fill my man.

If you don't live like you wanna, you live like you shouldn't

by trotanoy on Feb 8, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

I trust Palmer

And our biggest hole is our scouting department
So we need to draft the best player available, not not reach for Damien Williams or Brandon LaFell

If the best player is Brandon Graham at 21, should we not take him? Why wouldnt you want your team to have the best player available?

I think you just like to argue, try thinking outside of the box

by Joe Goodberry on Feb 8, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

As a matter of fact, I don't like arguing.

Just happens that we have a different point of view, so stop wining about arguing or not.

We all need to see what happens in the scouting combine and pro days to really determine the value on most of these players. After that, we’re going to narrow it to maybe 3 options. Even then, it will all come down to the day of the draft, anything can happen then.

then what do we need in the 1st round?

Our needs are…

WR, TE, S, G, DE, CB, DT

So we could take any of those positions

www.fantasydaddy.com

by Joe Goodberry on Feb 6, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

Just because we need all of those things...

doesn’t mean that they are all equally important.

IMO, in order of importance:
WR
S
TE
G
CB
K
DT

I don’t even list DE because I have high hopes for MJ to be much more involved next season and Antwan Odom also developing into an elite DE. If you talk about depth, then we could take one in the later rounds.

If you don't live like you wanna, you live like you shouldn't

by trotanoy on Feb 6, 2010 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

you shouldnt draft for need

we should draft the best players available, because you never know what your needs for next season are. Comming into the season we didnt know WR was our biggets need. We thought we were deep a Safety, and we thought we solved our TE needs until 3 guys ended up on IR. So you cant draft based on need, and you have to draft based on best player available that can help your team

www.fantasydaddy.com

by Joe Goodberry on Feb 7, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Partially agreed.

The assertion that one should not draft for need is wrong. Every team has needs, some more than others. A team should draft FIRST what they need, and then draft for value. Of course, if you come to a point in the draft where you are picking and there is ABSOLUTELY no value in a position you want to draft for need, then yes, draft for value.

The Bengals are in a position to draft MOSTLY for value in this draft. However there are three HUGE needs that should be addressed via draft and FA. If we don’t address them via FA, then we should make them our highest priority in the draft: WR, S, TE.

by trotanoy on Feb 7, 2010 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

Brandon Graham is what you call a sexy pick.

I don’t think we should draft a position in the 1st round which is not of our highest priority.

If you don't live like you wanna, you live like you shouldn't

by trotanoy on Feb 8, 2010 12:00 AM EST reply actions

I understand, you only want the Bengals to draft a WR or S in round 1

but wer might not be able to get a WR or S worth pick 21, so if we cant trade down… we need to select a different position.

Was Chris Perry Our Biggest Need? David Pollack? Johnathan Joseph?

I wouldnt take Cody

but I would take Price

Cody and Peko would be an "unpenetrable" wall for years to come.

We dont need another guy with weight issues

you need to look more into this scouting process

www.fantasydaddy.com

by Joe Goodberry on Feb 8, 2010 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

I don't recall us NOT taking Smith because of his weight issues.

I don’t see us having any problem with Smith now. Cody has MASSIVE potential, I don’t think it’s an issue as we just dealt successfully with a similar case in Smith.
