Pointless debate of the week
The cries of despair have been loud the last few weeks in Minnesota. After their heartbreaking loss to the Saints, Vikings fans have thrown themselves into the grieving process. First there was denial "There is no way Favre just threw that interception." Then there was anger "Adrian Peterson does not deserve to be a VIking anymore." Next came the bargaining "If Brett stays for one more year..." And then depression "The Vikings will never win a Super Bowl. Their cursed." Finally, and slowly came the acceptance, "Next year, we'll make a title run!"
After catching flack all year from Vikings fans for wearing my Ochocinco Jersey, and enduring taunts of "Bungles Suck" and "OchoStinko," I couldn't help but relish just a little bit in their loss. It made our own playoff exit that much more bearable for me.
What really torqued me however, was after trying to console my grieving Vikings friends, they made this claim:
"It's harder to be a Vikings fan than a Bengals fan, because the Vikings always get close and then lose the big game. The Bengals just don't come close."
So what you rather be a fan of? A team that gets close year in, and year out and always loses? Or a team that makes the playoffs on average once every ten years?
(Obviously we want our team to win the Super Bowl every year, but I'm asking merely for the sake of argument.)

If would entirely depend on whether the team actually seemed to understand how to fix the problem and was trying to fix it. With the Saints the last few years I could tell the team was trying, they just made some mistakes (like Jason David) that set them back. With the Bengals, until this year I wasn’t so sure. For that matter, I’m still not so sure. But I’ll be glad if it turns out this flirting with 1950s football was simply because they had no choice rather than because they were so stupid as to think it was the absolute best way to go.
The fact remains that this is a passing league these days. That doesn’t mean you never run. You still need some sort of a running game of some fashion. Bubble screens and such can substitute for a “true” running game if you have a QB like Peyton Manning, otherwise you need balance. Right now we don’t have that.
