I'm at work!
But when I get home I’m going to make something tasty. I just haven’t decided on what yet…
Sean Payton is awesome! Onside kick against Manning takes guts.
Hope Marvin Lewis was watching and seeing a team play to win, rather than not to lose.
NO KIDDING. Man, I love Sean Payton anyway, but Marvin and Sean are friends. Please let this be a lesson to the entire Bengals coaching staff.
really?
the onside kick has about 4-1 odds against. It worked this time, but you know what they say about the sunshine and a dog’s ass. You really want the Bengals to take a cue from a team doing an extremely low percentage play with a potential for HUGE downside in field position when they’re only down by 4 and there’s 30 minutes left on the clock?
Like I said, it worked this time, but that doesn’t make it a good play.
Actually...
AdvancedNFLStats reports that about 60% of unexpected onside kicks are successful. (Remember the Dallas game last year?)
Even IF you were right about it being 20% chance, it would STILL be worth it. Why? “YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME.”
You have to take at least SOME chances. And of course you have to get lucky on some of them as well. But you still have to have the guts to take a few.
Add in the fact that you are NOT right about it being 20% odds (as Todd points out), and yeah I do want them taking a cue from him. Not on boneheaded no-chance plays of course. But smart gambling, which for all his reputation is really far more what Sean does, yeah I very much do.
Also, Payton claims that, in his film study, he had noticed a specific tendency of two members of the Indy return team to “jump” the kick and start running back early, and so was trying to take advantage of a specific weakness beyond the element of surprise.
And if you go back and watch the replays (gotta love GameRewind for this if nothing else), you can see that they did start moving back on cue this time as well. And those lost 5 yards were too much to overcome when trying to go back to get the ball.
Add in that A) the guy had pretty much all year long kicked nothing but deep right kicks yet here they kick short and left, and B) that in his entire year (which also happens to have been his entire pro career) he had never attempted a single onside kick, and the odds of success go up even higher.
