A look at Andre Smith
Afternoon Cincy Jungle,
I'm BSerious a Dolphins fan from the Phinsider. The reason I came over here is because I need your help. Recently, there has been talk of the Dolphins looking at Terrence Cody, the big boy NT from Alabama. Even though he plays a different position, his absolute monster size and work ethic reminded me of Andre Smith, who you guys drafted from the same school with your sixth pick. I was wondering how Andre was doing for you, I remember all the critics talked, but his size and strength was a gift that just couldn't be taught. Certainly the upside is there, and I feel that Cody could be a great player as well.
I know OTackle is Different from NT, but I was wondering if someone can recap how Andre has been doing, make a prediction for his next couple of years so I can see if Cody could be the same type of player. We need a big NT to make the rest of our D run smooth, but is he worth the risk. Should we see if Cody slips, or forget him alltogether and focus on a smaller more polished player such as Tenn's Dan Williams. If you were the Dolphins GM what would you do? But hey, when in doubt personally i'd draft CJ Spiller lol. That's it, i'd appreciate any input and good luck to your squad this year.

To recap
The first thing that happened was a huge holdout, with ownership trying to draft him at #6 but pay him #9 money. After that was finally resolved, Smith showed up well into training camp with weight issues, and promptly broke his foot on day 2. By the time his foot would allow him to play, the season was more than half over. Smith saw limited action in unbalanced lines that our OC really liked this year, but did seem to contribute a little better as time went on. Then, after the season was over, he went for surgery on the foot he broke in hopes of preventing further injury.
It now appears that the organization has him pencilled in as the starting RT next year, assuming he can stay healthy and get his development back on track. We’re all hoping so, but who knows?
thats right.. i saw he only started 6 games but totally forgot about the injury...
are you guys still happy with your selection or would you take it back if you could?
Laces out!
-2008 AFC East Champions-
Suck it Pats, Bills and most of all... the god damn jets.
Sean Smith/Vontae Davis= Pat Surtain/Sam Madison
With the benefit of hindsight...
I might have done differently, but then so would half the teams in the first round. The real verdict on Smith will come in when he’s had a few seasons to demonstrate whether he can stay healthy, and if so, what he will do with the opportunity. So realistically, I’m willing to stand by the pick for now.
None of this helps you with Cody, I realize. I haven’t really paid him any attention on the assumption that he won’t be a consideration for the Bengals at #21 (a) because he’d probably be gone before then, and (b) because he’s a better prospect for a team that uses a 3-4. My only advice is that if you think your coaching staff is the sort to really whip a raw talent into shape and keep him conditioned (and under 350 lbs), then considering him is fine. If that isn’t your staff’s mojo, then the more polished guy is the better bet.
Right now
Take it back. I was against drafting him in the first place, I was all for Michael Oher.
Smith did however show some good blocking ability towards the end of the year. He could end up working out if he keeps his weight under control. I think it’s hard to say at this point with what happened with the holdout and then him getting injured.
What's up hurt guys? I don't talk to hurt guys.
Question #18- When do you not run a 40 with your shirt off?
Man the Bengals could have been in the Blind Side too!
Damn that sucks, I never thought of Oher before. We missed out big time, that is the highest grossing movie starring a female in history.

Cody
Cody needs an NFL training regimen. He needs to turn that fat into muscle. He will also learn how to eat and take care of his body. Every young player get better in the first 3 years in the NFL just because they start training like NFL players. Cody will learn how to somewhat control his wieght. and if you look at all the NTs in the league. most of them have weight problems

That is the reason they play NT
Looke at Rodgers and Hampton, Wilfork. The reason they are so amazing is because they are HUGE but still are athletic enough to move the load around and stuff the middle. So this guy losing weight doesn’t really factor into his success.

I'll stick with Smith
Too early to assess this pick since he only played in 6 games. If I had to predict, Smith will be a bedrock at RT for years to come, barring injury.
