Mike Iupati to meet with Bengals

What do you guys think?  Although I think we have greater positions of need, he'll almost certainly be the best player available if he's around at #21.  With this guy and Andre Smith developing together, we could have a solid foundation for our line for years to come.

Apparently he's projected as a mid to late first round pick, but does anybody really think he'll be available at 21?  I can definitely see Pitt snatching him up if he's around.

CINCINATTI SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM IUPATI..........

HE IS NOT THE BEST PLAYER AT HIS POSITION. Maurkice Pouncey is a better player who can also play center. DRAFT DEFENSE IN THE FIRST RD

If we give Palmer a line that is more than just adequate for the next few years (and if Brat “accidentally” slips on a banana peel and gets injured just enough to incapacitate him, but not enough to kill him), we might have a chance at getting back to 2005-2007 form. If he’s there, then I think we ought to take him.

This is our year!

of course, I’d be happy with a number of other players as well….Brandon Graham, Earl Thomas, that Pierre Guy, and I’ve even see Dez Bryant fall to us in some mock drafts.

This is our year!

I continue to advocate for Thomas

and will do so until the draft. That said, I wouldn’t be upset if Iupati was the backup plan in the event of Thomas disappearing in the #10-15 range.

With respect to the above comment, I actually think the Steelers would go for Pouncey before Iupati, so I believe the latter will be available at #21.

P.S.

Interestingly, your link mentions he is to meet with, among others, the Browns and Chiefs. Nobody is suggesting Iupati is worth a #5-7 pick, nor are there many expecting to last very long into Round 2. Could this be a sign of their interest in a trade down?

you got it right

Thomas should be our #1 target by far. but we should expect him to go in the 10-15 range

I think that will be very tough

Some scouts rate Thomas above Eric Berry. So if you think Berry is a lock for top 10, then Thomas wont be far behind. I hope he does fall. I hope enough scouts dont like him. Teams like the K.C., Cleveland, Miami, Seattle (twice), 49ers (twice), Steelers, Texans all need help at Safety

i would love mays over thomas because he fits us

thomas would be good in more of a ball hawk D and mays would be good in a smash mouth D

by vottoholic on Mar 21, 2010 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

no way

Zimmer wants a Safety than can cover the slot and 4th WR, and somebody that can play center field

you are way off base with Mays over Thomas

Then explain Zims love for Roy b/c

Roy is not exactly a ball hawk.. He’s a smash mouth, hit you in the mouth, safety.

by WHYUS!! on Mar 22, 2010 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

and we already have him

so why take mays? ndukwe is the same type of player too. zimmer wants both.

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Mar 22, 2010 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel Mays would be better than Ndukwe and

he can replace Roy when the time comes, after learning from him. Future?
It’s hard to find a player that is the Ronnie Lott type.. If you remember when Roy was in his early years, they considered him the next Ronnie Lott. The hits he puts on the offensive players has a lot of impact on the opponents ability to play their game. (fear) Though he’s no Lott, he’s close to it and Mays has that ability….

I agree.

Its not a bad idea to have two similar players on the same team when one is a seasoned veteran and one is a rookie who needs guidance and leadership to reach his full potential.

I would not be upset with Mays at 21..

Texans and a corner

The Texans will definitely draft a corner/Safety. The question is will it be Kyle Wilson or Earl Thomas…

by The Dealio on Mar 22, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Mays VS Thomas

Mays does not fit us. The Bengals like there safties to be interchangeable and have the versatility to slide over and cover the slot. T.Mays cannot do this. Thomas can. Just because we brought in R.Williams last year everyone thinks T. Mays is the better fit when in reality Mays is a run playing safety and is poor in coverage. He cannot change directions well and is slow side to side. he is only fast running in a straight line. He would be a liability in coverage for us and we would have to take him out in passing situations and put in another safety or corner. Thomas is the better player for our defense. Mays would fit in much better in a 3-4 defense not a 4-3 so look for mays to be gone no later than San Fransisco at #17. They run a 3-4 defense and are coached by Singletary. Good fit.

+a lot

I’m not a Mays proponent for the same reasons.

by Jaegner on Mar 22, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree with everything except Mays being a better fit in a 3-4. I think Myas would fit better in a 4-3 because he can come up and be that 4th LB in the run game and not have to cover TEs and RBs as much.
in the 3-4, the OLBs are almost always blitzing, so that leaves 2 ILB to cover the RBs and TEs. and the safties have to help cover way more. thats why Roy Williams struggled playing in dallas the last few seasons

This is my point exactly on Mays..

He is more like Roy. And Zim loves some Roy….

by WHYUS!! on Mar 22, 2010 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Roy plays SS

Thomas would replace Crocker eventually, and until then would help as the 4th CB 3rd S

Mays

Just watch Ohio State vs USC last season and watch mays getting beat time and time again, taking bad angles, not being able to change directions, I love his hitting ability and intimidation and he would bring that to us but I just don’t think he can cover at this level. I mean he had trouble staying with Ohio State WR Dan Sazenbacher and he is no Anthony Gonzalez. How is he gonna hold up with NFL level receivers. Just making a point.
