Open Thread: Bengals are on the clock for the 2010 SB Nation Mock Draft

Here's the deal. We're in the middle of conducting a two-round SB Nation Mock Draft with all of the football teams. This isn't the Cincy Jungle Mock Draft that Friar Bob is conducting. Here's the problem. We were going to target one of the top three safeties as our draft pick -- whoever was left. However, all three safeties are gone. Brandon Graham and Mike Iupati are gone too. Same for Derrick Morgan, Joe Haden and Sean Weatherspoon. Terrence Cody is still there. As is Dez Bryant and Jermaine Gresham.

So this is an open thread. Who do you believe we should pick?

Dez Bryant

BengalStripes.com has a mock draft and he falls to them and that’s who they picked. After reading his reasoning I believe he’d be the best choice.. Considering Chad will undoubtedly get his wish to leave Cincinnati after 2012 and retire somewhere else..

Dez Bryant

I think if Dez Bryant were to fall to us than we’d have to pick him. He would be the other weapon we’ve been lacking in the passing game since TJ left. Imagine Chad on one side, Antonio on the other and Dez lining up in the slot? Crazy…..we can always get a TE in later rounds. We don’t value tight ends high enough to pick Gresham there.

Dez Bryant is a future ace.

Can’t pass him. WR round 1, TE round 2, S and OG round 3, then depth. Mhm.

Almost

But take Morgan burnett in rd 2 and te and g in 3

RIP Slim.

This is my thought process right now.

(and yes, I’m too siding with Bryant)

With Dez Bryant, the Bengals are back to having a hell of a trio of wide receivers that could make Palmer part of the “elite” conversation again with a running game that a Palmer led offense hasn’t seen before. The offense would immediately be potent and threatening like they were several years ago.

With Cody, the Bengals would rotate Tank, Peko and Cody as, what could be, one of the league’s best trio of defensive tackles, improving the team’s rush defense, which ranked seventh in the NFL last year.

Both players would figure to be long-term starters at their respective positions.

what about brian price

is he off the board too? i’d prefer him to cody.

Price is still there.

then i like price

an inside penetrator that can be a pass rush monster inside

by Joe Goodberry on Mar 28, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the idea of Price as well, but nobody in the league would be able to run through a wall of Cody, Peko and Tank. However, Price brings the pass rushing ability to the table that the line lacked last year, so I might side with him. Regardless, I think it’s near impossible to pass on Dez Bryant.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 28, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

It would be stupid if we passed on Dez Bryant. He is the BPA by far and would be an amazing pick. Chad is 32, Bryant is 29. Dez would come in and learn from one of the best in Chad and in a few years be the #1 on our team at the age of 24/25. He would immediately help our struggling offense. We would be dumb not to take him

by ochocinco4pres on Mar 28, 2010 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

Dez Bryant

I didn’t expect the best receiver in the draft to fall to us. He’s probably the best guy available. I’d be ok with Price too, to help fortify the line if/when tank or Peko go down.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 28, 2010 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

I would guess

the likely choice (from Mike Brown) would be Dez Bryant because he offers us another no.1 target who can take over for Chad in the comming seasons. He is a playmaker and fits Brown’s method of taking pure talent regardless of red-flags.
Also the front office has said make noises that Carson doesn’t have enough “weapons” (indicated by our collection of WRs) so getting another potential no.1 (to add with Chad a no.1 and the other Bryant who is a no.1/2) would mean that Carson has pleanty of weapons and then the only worry would be if the line has depth. (which can be sorted in the draft alongside the FA after the draft where players are cheap).

I don’t see the pick being Cody as we have Peko (and Sims as NT or Over-Tackle). I don’t see Price being the pick because he doesn’t really fit the size/type of Lewis’s DTs (too short.. though the guy is pretty damn good). Plus with the 3-4 being in vogue we most likely get a penetrator DT in and around the 3 and 4 rounds.

Bryant will never make it to us

Steelers will snatch him up in a second if he even falls THAT far

by Bengals NFL Champs on Mar 28, 2010 12:32 PM EDT reply actions

they have far more pressing needs

like CB and OL. on top of the need to get younger at LB. no way they take bryant.

RIP Slim.

RE:

Yep. The Steelers picked up Iupati in the SB Nation mock draft. Plus, with Mike Wallace, Ward and Holmes, would the Steelers need a guy like Bryant with other needs?

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Mar 28, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

You could say the same thing about us though. We don’t really need another #1 WR next year, but picking Bryant gives us a threat for the future, as well as immediately improving our passing game. It will also end the Palmer/Line/WR debate about who’s the problem for our passing game.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 28, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep...

Sure the Steelers have more pressing needs, but if a talent like Bryant, who could be catching TDs for Rottenbuger for 6 or 7 yrs. falls to them, there is NO WAY Tomlin passes.

Especially knowing that if he does, he’ll have to watch Carson throw TDs to him twice a year.

by Bengals NFL Champs on Mar 28, 2010 1:47 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

you're still not listening.

you don’t pick players to keep your opponents from getting them. we’re not going to take colt mccoy in the 1st rd to keep cleveland from getting him early in the 2nd.

if ward was talking about retiring, i could see this being a valid claim, but they already have 2 burners in wallace and holmes. on top of signing randall el and battle.

i would be willing to bet hundreds of dollars that they pass on him if he’s there.

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Mar 28, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but

by the same logic, we shouldn’t pick him up either if he falls to us. We’ve got Ocho and Bryant, so there’s really no need for another WR, unless that WR solidifies your group for the next 5 years.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 28, 2010 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

but where's the 3rd

if we’re going to open up the passing attack, we need at least 3 solid WRs.

the steelers have ward, holmes, and wallace was actually really good last year. that’s why i think it’s more likely that we would pick him up.

i guess the difference is the steelers know what they’re getting from their 3 main guys, we pretty much only know what we’re getting from 85.

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Mar 28, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually hope you're right

and the Steelers draft for need w/ their 1st pick instead of BPA. Obviously, it’s impossible at this point to say for sure, but I think Bryant is the real deal and will be torturing defensive coordinators for years to come.

I just have a hard time believing when Pitt is on the clock they’ll be saying to themselves, “hey Dez Bryant is still out there, but we’ve signed a couple of world-beaters in Randall El and Battle so we really don’t need him…” No, I suspect they’ll grab the stud WR in Rd 1 and fill their other needs in Rd’s 2-7. And then, I shall pluck out mine own eyes whilst I watch him burn Roy Williams deep wearing black & gold.

Or I could be wrong and they take a DB. Either way fun to talk about…

by Bengals NFL Champs on Mar 29, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

I would believe it a lot more if Wallace hadn’t come on pretty well last year. It’s possible they pick him up as a possible future replacement for ward, but I don’t see them getting up there to pick and not taking iupati, Thomas, or Wilson.

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Mar 29, 2010 8:22 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Steelers & Bryant

I agree, Pittsburgh has needs of CB, S, OT, G, and NT and DE are getting old, The Steelers just picked up Antwan Randal El and also Picked up S.F. WR Arnez Battle. They are stacked at WR now with H.Ward, S.Holmes and also M.Wallace to go along with the others I listed. They would not take a WR.

by POGO94 on Mar 28, 2010 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Very true

I fear that Shittsburgh will take Earl Thomas.

Slim 15, you will be missed. RIP Chris Henry

by Danimal, Destroyer of Worlds on Mar 28, 2010 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

That's a possibility

But if they did, it would possibly mean they were converting him to CB. I think If they’re going secondary that they would pick a true corner, but that’s just me.

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Mar 28, 2010 11:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

So who did we pick up?

Can you post a link to this?

RE:

We haven’t picked yet. I have until 9 tonight to make the selection. After that, I’ll have to do a write-up for the site and then it goes to a schedule of the posts before our selection. I’ll hand out the link once I do but I’ll let you guys know when I make the selection.

And so far, you guys have me convinced that Bryant is our guy.

I’m going to hold off on making the selection for a few more hours so others can chime in.

Best part?

You know, the best part about the draft this year is that I can’t remember a time when the Bengals didn’t have a desperate need at a certain position. I mean, last year, we were simply talking about a tackle. Didn’t matter who, we needed a damned tackle. Even after the 2005 season, we talked about a cornerback to replace Tory James and Deltha O’Neal after that.

This year, we’re debating on which position that the team could solidify. Roster building. Depth.

if the draft played out like this....

Bryant is a steal.

but you’re spot on. The Bengals can take the best player available on day one. If only someone would fall into their lap like Rey did last season!

by wiseking on Mar 28, 2010 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Bryant

1. Best player available.
2. You can never have a WR group that is too dangerous. And even if you do, free agency dictates you won’t have it for long; you always need to have an eye out for good young route runners, preferably who can stretch the field.
3. Even for those who wanted to go D with #21 (myself included), I suspect most of us were wanting us to pick up another WR in the 2nd or 3rd round.

By the way, I sure as hell hope that the real draft doesn’t unfold like this one. No Thomas, Pouncey, Iupati, Morgan, Graham, or Weatherspoon? Brutal.

by Mr. X on Mar 28, 2010 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

Bryant as well.

The Bengals should definitely select Bryant with their first pick if he is still there. He would not have the pressure to perform right from the start since he would likely be the #3 WR, which is always good for a rookie WR. I seriously doubt that he would be there on draft day though.

by IckeySuffleTime on Mar 28, 2010 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

Any way this mock can include trades?

I would be all for trading for multiple picks for someone desperate for Bryant. I just don’t like him. If not I would be all for Price or one of the Hybrid ends like Pierre if he’s there. Also like Haden. That pick could make the pass defense lock down. I just really don’t trust Bryant. Plus next to first round QBs first round WRs seem to have just as much of a bust occurrence. Would rather have a above average blue collar guy like gillyard, tate, or the Tech WR.

by In Marvin I Trust on Mar 28, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

Damaryius Thomas is the guys name, and he should not go before Bryant.

by ochocinco4pres on Mar 28, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

moving down

I agree that moving down in the draft might not be a bad idea at this point. If thats possible, give it a look.

Otherwise Brian Price would be my pick. Remember when Peko went down last year and our run defense went to crap? I’d love to have someone like Price who could provide the inside pass rush & plug the run.

Pick is in.

I went with Colt McCoy. He wasn’t drafted yet and I think we need a backup quarterback.

Kiiiiiiiiiding. Kidding.

Pick is Dez Bryant.

“fake/mock” goodbye Simpson. Fun to imagine.

For the record, Dez Bryant is the only receiver I would draft in round 1, or maybe even the first three rounds. Simpson should get his last shot at being a contributor on this team, but if Dez Bryant fell to us, we’d have to take him.

This is our year!

agreed

there is the possibility simpson gets it this year.

I would’ve gone with Gresham, but I like this pick a lot better than Andre Smith.

Did anyone quit the combine this year? If so, I suggest we pass. Wocka Wocka!

by bodacio zk on Mar 28, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Now thats a steal!
  1. reciever in the draft at 21… Whoo mama, 40 points per game here we come!

Good call with Bryant.

My thought was that getting him now is great while chad and antonio are still around. it will give him a season or two to grow.

by JohnnyK on Mar 28, 2010 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

Bryant would be my choice too

imagine the confusion on defense, if he wore #18 and Antonio Bryant wore #81. or is that a stretch?

www.fantasydaddy.com

by Joe Goodberry on Mar 28, 2010 6:25 PM EDT reply actions

I think the thing to be learned here is...

that there is no way somebody won’t fall to us. If everyone we’ve talked about is off the board, Mays, Thomas, Iupati, Kindle… then Bryant Falls. If Bryant gets taken, we can get any of those guys as a replacement… not bad!

by The Dealio on Mar 29, 2010 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

DEZ BRYANT - Top 10, maybe top5 talent falls to 20, you take him.

Bengals usually draft on overall talent, not neccessarily position. (At least lately)
