The roaring twenties

Upon further review, I got to thinking about drafting in the 20's, and the huge advantages of being in that area come Draft Day.

For one, the Bengals have a good core of players, and are in a good position to draft whom they think is the Best Player available at each of their nine draft positions.

Of most interest to me this year is the potential to upgrade an array of position groups.   While the web is watered down with Mock Drafts - some Mocks covering 7 rounds which is about as asinine as Joe Lunardi's Mock Bracket, anyhow - it's conceivable that any of the following positions are in play:

LB; TE; WR; DT; DE; C; OG; OT; RB; SS; FS........(long snapper?)

Lately, I've been thinking about the potential of a trade.  What if the Bengals were approached about their #21 slot?  I'm not sure they need to stock up picks, but what if an offer is to sweet to pass up?

I found a nice website with Draft Day Trade History and thought yall might be interested.  Trade details are included below each draft.

It seems last year was one of the more crazy 1st Round trade-fests ever.  If you look back at the past few drafts, its around the 20's that you start to see teams get nervous and start begging to move up.

What if another team is desperate for an O-Lineman, like the Ravens were for Michael Oher.  How bout the Jets trading back into the 1st round a couple years back to get Dustin Keller.  Or the Browns "reaching" for Brady Quinn, lol?

I think we all know that Mikey Brown loves his draft picks, and if there's a great player available that you want then you should draft him.  In fact, last year reports surfaced that a number of teams approached the Bengals to trade into the #38 slot to get Maualuga, which they obviously turned down.....cuz it is the StingRey.  But there's always that chance that a team will fear the next drafter eyes "their guy" and makes the Bengals "an offer they can't refuse".

Any thoughts on this topic CJ Nation?  Thanks yall

I would have no problem....

…with the Bengals trading down for me picks either this year or next if that is what makes sense given the players on the board. Even with all the scouting and analysis, the NFL draft is pretty much a crapshoot and the best way to win is by having more chances.

Last time we had this little need

we traded back and picked up Chris Perry. While that pick was bad it definitely set precedence. I could see us trading back with SD so that they can get their choice of RB or with the Cowboys for them to grab Dez Bryant.

I think that picking up a 3rd round pick would be good in this year’s draft to get more depth at our positions of need.

I would be dissapointed if we traded down

At #21, there are still a few elite players at their respective positions, even if they weren’t considered top 20 material. I think this team is a few dominant players away (at least on defense) to be scary good. If we passed on these guys for some project players, or role players in later rounds I think we’d miss out.

If Thomas or Iupati or Dez Bryant are available, then and we miss our opportunity to get them, I think we’ll be looking backwards the rest of the year.

This is our year!

I hear you 9, but

what if a team wants to trade up say…. 5 slots? it happens, and you end up still drafting in the 20’s, plus you might pick up an extra Second Third Day Pick.

i don’t know, we’ll see how it goes

I think it would depend on a lot of guys being gone...

If Taylor Mays is the last man standing at 21, then maybe we should trade down a few slots and pick up a Brian Price, Jared Odrick, Pierre Paul, or someone else. But I agree with Carsonorbust that if an elite player is around (Bryant, Thomas, Iupati) that we are targeting then it will be foolish to make the trade.

What if 5 of them are?

What if Bryyant, Graham, Iupati, Price, and Mays are there and we can move down a few spots. Its would remain likely that we could get one of them and an extra pick.

exactly

that’s my point.

and i said above, if someone they want is there they take him.

But, if they’re indifferent on 4 or 5 guys, (and Mikey can save few bucks) plus get a 6th or 7th round pick (for Clifton Geathers, baby), I’d say it would be a money move.

agreed

Depends on who is there.

There will be a few guys left who shouldn’t be there, and a few guys gone that we didn’t want gone yet.

We have no real NEEDS this year, so if we can stock up, and still get quality guys, then why not?

Heck, if Mikey understood the draft well enough, they could trade down a few spots, and package thier late #2 with the acquired pick to move up higher in round 2. That way you pick maybe #26 and #36 (for example). And you can get some of the very good players who generally start to vanish by the early/mid 2nd round.
