Free Agency Eve Open Discussion Thread

Free agency opens at 12:01 EST, in just over 5 hours. Earlier today, the Bengals dealt with the rest of their restricted free agents and terminated Laveranues Coles' contract. This means he does not become an "unrestricted" free agent and is free to talk to teams already; it also means the Bengals won't get any compensatory picks next year because he was cut, not released. Use this thread to discuss breaking news, which I'll do my best to keep updated throughout the evening. I'm watching Joe Reedy, other Twitter sources and ESPN closely, but if I miss something, yell at me and talk about it here!

Update #1: @joereedy says the Bengals are not close to retaining any potential UFAs. That means Bobbie Williams and Tank Johnson are unlikely to re-sign before midnight. They'll test the market.

Update #2 (11:17 EST): @OGOchocinco: The Jets just got @cromartie31 which pairs him with @revis24, i have my own OCNN surprise comin soon (sic)

Update #3 (12:02 EST): The Baltimore Sun's Ravens blog reports that talks with Kevin Walter may be serious. Bengals fans have discussed him as a new WR option. Hope the Ravens don't burn us if he's a top priority for the Bengals, and I hope Walter isn't vindictive.

Also, Florio has "rankings" of offensive free agents based on projected cost. T.O. comes in at 5 mill, Walter at 7 mill. Here's PFT's cash defense dollar-based FA rankings.

Update #4 (1:09 EST): I give up. Nothing Bengals-related is going to happen tonight. At least we had some fun! The Bears have been very active with Julius Peppers, deal is could be done by Friday afternoon. The Ravens have been linked to Marshall and Walter, and also TE Brandon Manumaleuna. Seahawks have been linked with Marshall and Rolle. Dunta Robinson to Atlanta is expected to be done on Friday too. Here's to a more interesting weekend.

Final Update (2:04 EST): Leigh Bodden, a guy on my free agent wishlist and one of the best UFA CB available, is not generating any excitement in Cincinnati. Joe Reedy told me that there's nothing so much as simmering in Cincinnati tonight, and a NFP report has the Steelers, Texans, Seahawks and Patriots interested in the corner. In the wee hours of the morning, Schefter tweeted than the Panthers cut DT Maake Kemoeatu. Het ore his ACL but is expected to be ready for training camp. I wouldn't mind giving him a look, as he constantly commands double teams. Nate Burleson also signed in Detroit.

Sadly, at 2:48 EST Joe Reedy told me that the rumors about Ben Watson interest are just rumors.

Typically major networks and front office execs go to sleep around 2:00 AM EST.

I don’t expect to be up all night. I remember spam refreshing ESPN a year ago, and it just wouldn’t update…

Rumor has it...

Brandon Marshall’s strongest suitors will be NYJ due to the lowered price tag (great…), Washington (the Redskins spending money in FA? No way!), and Seattle (due to solid trade chips).

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 6:56 PM EST reply actions

Roy Williams will also be free to test the FA waters.

Willy Anderson is making fun of Bengals fans for holding out hope on Marshall.

Joe Reedy will be on 700 WLW around 7:30 EST to talk about the impending FA period. I need to get Joe’s phone number.

Greg Olsen to Patriots is likely. The Pats are letting Ben Watson walk and are releasing Chris Baker.

For the fans who want Cosby to be our slot WR
ProFootbalFocus @jGoods13 Cosby might make an excellent slot WR, problem is would Caldwell make a good wide out? because we KNOW he’s good in slot.

I asked who would be the best fit for the Bengals
ProFootbalFocus @jGoods13 Walter seems a good fit – tough, good hands, reliable. Nice balance with Chad’s speed and route running.

Walter would be good.

He never drops passes (ok, not often).

He’s played with Palmer. He can go across the middle. But we need a WR, not a SR.

gotcha

Walter can play outside, Profootballfocus knows their stuff. they know Caldwell is the SR and they still recomended Walter

I saw that.

But I still think Walter’s size and skills are more equitable to Wes Welker than anyone else.

We're just trying to promote a new culture.

With more user input (fanposts) of higher quality (encouraged by being featured as a “rec’d fanpost”).

The more we get people to recommend comments and fanposts, the more we hope people write and contribute. We do great with comments on Gameday, but we’re trying to build a community, and we hope encouraging recommendations will be a piece of the puzzle.

They have great fan contributions and a great culture.

I love the community at Red Reporter too. We’re trying to make that happen here. And we’ll be very overt about it (I will, anyway), especially this off season. We barely have any inside jokes on this site!

Michael Lombardi say the only team he can see TO going to is Cincy

www.fantasydaddy.com

by Joe Goodberry on Mar 4, 2010 7:32 PM EST reply actions

Interesting.

I don’t necessarily disagree. I think he’s a good fit here. But I think he could end up in Baltimore, if they don’t go after Marshall, or a variety of other places looking for WR help. I think the perception of TO as cancer has gone down.

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

I would love to see T.O. in stripes, but I don’t know how close MB could come numbers-wise to giving him what he wanted. On the flip side, if I was MB I would use the all powerful Ocho to try and sway him to take less, even if its just a 1 year deal. We don’t need to get burned on a big money WR for 2 straight years. If we could get him at a bargain it would be ideal.

Well, they have the right to match.

Mike Brown is being notoriously cheap. Another 500k (or something like that?) would have been a 2nd round tender. Mathis was solid this year, so I hope we don’t end up having to pay him too much. I’d rather retain him than let him walk, even for a 3rd rounder.

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

MIKE BROWN WAKE UP!!!

You have a QB that can sling it during a time in the NFL where YOU HAVE TO PASS TO WIN! GET THE MAN SOME REAL WR’s! Enough with the midgets.

Brandon Marshall plain and simple. give him loot and give up the 1st rounder. NOW IS THE TIME. If we wait to long, this team will slip back to garbage.

Thats the difference between real organizations and the Bengals. real ones go for it when the window for success is even slightly open.

Ball handling and dribbling are my strongest weaknesses."—David Thompson

by Benson on Mar 4, 2010 7:50 PM EST reply actions

Sadly, Marshall is looking more and more like a pipedream.

Even though it makes perfect sense – a 5-6 year deal to Marshall would tide Carson over till retirement – Brown won’t pull the trigger. 26 is young enough for me, and even if it takes 2 picks, Marshall would make as big a difference as any one player could.

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

Cliche

Sorry, but I’m not all about the

YOU HAVE TO PASS TO WIN!
cliche. Yes, the best teams in the league this year were the passing teams, but these sorts of trends are usually short lived. I’d be willing to bet that there will be a team in the next three years who will win a super bowl on defense and running.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 4, 2010 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

I'd agree, BUT -

The rules are also increasingly favoring WR and QB. Rules governing the running game don’t seem to be changing that much.

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

The one new rule that greatly favors DB’s though is that the ‘force out’ on sideline throws is now legal. They aren’t all going in the offenses favor.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 4, 2010 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Good point.

But they’re further revising QB-hitting and WR-hitting rules this offseason, I think, that could make it less scary for guys to go over the middle.

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 8:13 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying that we shouldn't go after some WR free agents to beef up the passing game. I'm just saying that we don't have to write off next season if we don't. I'll stand by my guess that in the next three years there will be at least one team that wins the big game without a top 10 passing offense.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 4, 2010 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

Top 10? Sure.

Top 20? No way. A team like this year’s Jets will never win a Superbowl, despite defensive and running game prowess.

We don’t have to write off next season, but a move to bring in Marshall would be huge (although also hugely unlikely). Carson would love it. Fans would love it. The results would be positive.

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

I’d give up a first and a third for Marshall no questions asked.

I wouldn’t be shocked if a team outside the top 20 in passing won a SB though if they had a top 5 defense. I wouldn’t put much money on it though.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 4, 2010 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

Problem will be that, given Denver's managerial aggression, it'll cost more.

Like a 1st, 3rd, and a player or 4th. They’re gonna rake in the picks with this guy just like they did in the Cutler deal.

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

He was tendered for a first rounder though wasn’t he? It’s my understanding that means that Denver would only get a first rounder as compensation.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 4, 2010 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t honestly understand the tendering stuff.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 4, 2010 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

I don't quite get it all either.

But people ahve been talking all day about how it’ll take mor than just the 1st rounder to get Marshall

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong

But I believe the highest tender is a 1st and 3rd tender. Broncos placed that on Elvis Dumervil.

Some say a comet will fall from the sky. Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still. Followed by millions of dumbfounded dips**ts.

by btcoop71 on Mar 4, 2010 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

Correct.

But, apparently RFAs can be “traded”. I don’t understand it entirely, but Joe Reedy and some ESPN guys have been saying that it’ll probably take a 1st, 2nd/3rd and/or a player to really get Marshall.

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

I think that’s correct, but can a team demand more than that in a sign/trade type of deal? I honestly don’t get it. I thought that Marshall was was only tendered a first rounder because the Broncos are shopping him.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 4, 2010 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

They're kind of shopping him.

They want to see what they can get. It’s pretty much putting him on the trade block.

by jsl413 on Mar 4, 2010 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

Not the same as a trade block

If I understand correctly, tendering him means that if we offer him a contract, and they don’t decide to match, then we have to give our first round to them

Actually I wouldn’t bet on that. I’m just not so sure we need him. Or, for that matter, that the Saints do either. They needed somebody to come in and settle down their secondary and provide veteran leadership. I think they’d like him around for another few years but could live without him.

We already have veteran leadership in our secondary, so we don’t need him for that. What we need is somebody who can actually cover back there instead of a pair of strong safeties that can beat up a RB but can’t stop the long bomb. And that’s not really Sharper’s forte either. Oh and being able to tackle would be nice as well. Not sure that’s his forte either.

Unless we want to change up our scheme to something more of what Gregg Williams plays, I don’t think we really need him.

You might have something here.

I’m not sure why, but players cut today have been “terminated” and not “waived.”

There’s a pretty big difference between the two, as termination prevents the player from becoming a UFA and prevents any future compensation. I wonder if these terminations have someting to do with teams wanting to re-structure contracts.

33-year-old DT Jamal Williams was realeased by San Diego today.

Intriguing option if he’s still got any juice. He’s a great player.

He can stack and shed single blocks easily and often commands double teams to keep LBs free to run to the ball. At 33, his age is a concern, but he has rare size and strength and he plays with good hand use to make plays in a small area. As a pass rusher he lacks overall speed and quickness.
