Reedy: Antonio Bryant to visit Cincinnati on Tuesday

So the Bengals need a wide receiver. No, it's true. And of those receivers, much is being made about Terrell Owens and the unlikely scenario that the Bengals trade away their 21st overall pick so they can have the honor to pay Brandon Marshall between $50-60 million.

Antonio Bryant has been mentioned with the Bengals, but mostly, we suspect, as a result that the class of available receivers is dwindling, considering that Bryant's production isn't that much more impressive than Laveranues Coles.

However, of all of the wide receivers, it's Bryant that will visit the team first, writes Joe Reedy. Our daily Good Guy Advise from Cincy Jungle: Don't read too much into it yet other than saying hello.

Bryant's Vitals

6-1. 205
Assets: Natural athlete with amazing body control. Can make highlight-film catches with his quick, soft hands and incredible leaping ability. Is fluid and agile and can cut on a dime. Fights off the jam well at the line and can catch the deep ball.

Flaws: Rounds off routes and plays at half speed at times. Doesn’t like to block. Fights with his coaches but doesn’t justify his talk on the field. Has some attitude issues.

He’s interesting because he has basically never had a good QB throwing it to him. I wouldn’t break the bank to get him, but If we get him for the right price… why not?

by The Dealio on Mar 8, 2010 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

Garcia was the best QB he had in TB

Notice he put up career numbers when he had JG throwing him the ball? Coincidence?

by IFChris on Mar 8, 2010 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

Cons: His tiny creepy eyes. Why does nobody else mention this?

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 8, 2010 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

My biggest problem with Bryant is his attitude toward coaches and blocking.

If he’s coming to Cincinnati to be a team player and is willing to block, then he’s fine.

by jsl413 on Mar 8, 2010 4:48 PM EST reply actions

He'd only be around for one year.

The advantage of Bryant is he can be a 3-4 year solution and if he’s focused, he can produce just as well as T.O.

I’d love to see them both come in, give T.O. a 1-year deal. Buys the young guys ANOTHER year to develop into reliable receivers.

by jsl413 on Mar 8, 2010 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

I think T.O. is a bigger threat...

Not to mention we would be national media darlings next if year if we could manage to make the playoffs again.. Can’t tell me that doesn’t mean anything to a lot of fans…

Bryant's visit will apparently be a two-day trip, indicating seriousness.

Filed to ESPN: Free agent WR Antonio Bryant is headed to Cincinnati for a visit tonight and tomorrow. He could be the Bengals WR.

by jsl413 on Mar 8, 2010 5:14 PM EST reply actions

All this crap

and we could have just offered TJ a couple cent’s here and there to keep him.. Jeesh..
Bring in T.O. this guy isn’t going to offer what we need..

by JamesShively on Mar 8, 2010 5:19 PM EST reply actions

And TO does?

In the past two seasons here are their stats:

AB: 1848 yards, 11 touchdowns
TO: 1881, 15 TDs.

Oh, and AB missed three games last season. TO didn’t.

by IFChris on Mar 8, 2010 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

I noticed

you marked stats from the past 2 years..
Bryant’s 2009 stats
39 rec 600 yrds 4 tds…

This look’s like Coles all over again..

by JamesShively on Mar 8, 2010 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

Bryant was hurt most of last year

… believe me, he was on my fantasy team. He had knee troubles the whole year after having surgery and no QB. The injury concerns are probably more worrisome to me than the stats.

by The Dealio on Mar 8, 2010 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

you beat me to it Dealio

but I posted his career stats. HA

by WHYUS!! on Mar 8, 2010 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

haha, I’m quick like a cat. But you brought the A game with the stats. Nice work

by The Dealio on Mar 8, 2010 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

He had a bum knee last year

Here is all of his stats and he never really had a QB throwing to him.
 http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BryaAn00.htm
and he has been hurt a lot, but played through it, a lot.

by WHYUS!! on Mar 8, 2010 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

All of these excuses

are just more proof to me that T.O. is more capable of being productive at this point in his career… This guy has never put together solid back to back season’s..

by JamesShively on Mar 8, 2010 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

I'm for TO also

b/c you are correct in the production area. AB is not worth 9-10 mill a year and we could get TO cheaper. But I do like Bryant for less money. Way less.
All I was doing was giving more insight so maybe fans can decide which two is the better and for what amount of $. B/c this is the route MB is going in you and me both know that.

by WHYUS!! on Mar 8, 2010 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

if they can get AB for 5+ million a year for three-four years with performance escalations in there (similar to the Burleson deal in Det) it would not be a bad deal and it would give the team a down field threat opposing secondaries have to note.

by Cedric Benson Boat Party on Mar 8, 2010 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

I specifically said the "past two seasons"

Are we going to all the way back to their rookie seasons so your point is correct?

by IFChris on Mar 8, 2010 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

I'm just saying

The best indicator of someone’s value is what they did the year before.. T.O. obviously out performed Bryant… And like I said before he’s never put up two solid back to back years and get’s hurt way to often.. T.O. manages to stay healthy, put’s up solid number’s, would command more attention from the secondaries, and would nail us in the national spotlight for most of next year…

by JamesShively on Mar 8, 2010 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

And over the last two seasons

Which is a much truer indication of the of the player we’d be getting — sorry, just because you know his name doesn’t mean we’ll be getting the same player he was in Philly or Dallas — Bryant has been just as good as TO.

So yeah, you’d go with the older player who has a rep for being an ass and dropping crucial passes. Sounds like a winning strategy.

by IFChris on Mar 8, 2010 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

Look up Bryant's history

he has been an ass just about everywhere he has went to the difference is it was with coaches not QB’s and the guy had to be reinstated to the league for failing drug test.. C’mon man get serious Bryant doesn’t help near as much as T.O.

by JamesShively on Mar 8, 2010 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

You are simply going be reputation...

Nothing more. Their numbers are identical over the last two seasons, but yet, you still think TO has more to offer. It would be nice if you could back that up with something other than a “because I said so” defense.

by IFChris on Mar 8, 2010 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

I will back it up

by saying it’s my belief team’s will still throw double coverage at Chad if Bryant is on the other side. I don’t think they see him as a threat. T.O. has also been a victim of double coverage for the majority of his career. Putting Chad and T.O. on the field at the same time open’s the field up for BOTH of them. I don’t see Bryant having that impact..

by JamesShively on Mar 8, 2010 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

TO only puts up better numbers because you have to pass him the ball twice as much just to get him to catch it. That doesn’t sound like a good offensive game plan.

37 year old who drops balls on big plays for 1 year or a 29 year old who catches balls on big plays for 3-4 years for the same price?

TO doesn’t sound like much of a deal to me. Plus, why bandaid the problem when we could possibly fix it.?

by lbacker2179 on Mar 8, 2010 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

NO to TO

By the way i would rather have marshall then either of these two, but bryant would be the back up plan.

by lbacker2179 on Mar 8, 2010 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

The Problem with Marshall is his HUGE contract that we would have to give him. Would we be able to sign both of our corners next year if we gave him this contract? Would we be able to resign Benson to a bigger deal? Would we have to cut back somewhere else because we have Marshall on the team?

These aren’t rhetorical questions by the way. I’m honestly curious.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 8, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

Good Questions

Only J joe is a free agent next year. Leon has another year after that. Yes, i think it is esential we lock them up for years to come.

Would we want to sign benson to a bigger deal? Of all the posistions in the NFL RB’s seem to be the most expendable and easier to find in the draft. Don’t get me wrong i love what Benson has done and hope he stays a bengal for long time but i think we could replace him in a year or so in the draft. As long as we stop drafting big ten RB’s.

Everyone we have now wont be here forever. Their wil always be turnover which makes the NFL so much more fun to watch. Who would be give up in long run. is a good question. If we get Marshall esentially we could end up replacing Chad. His contract ends soon, and he his starting to hit the age where is productivity is going to go down.

Whats to say we cant sign marshall with a high frontloaded contract during a year when there is no cap with incentive based salaries for the other years.

How would Marshall’s contract be any less devestating then a high draft pick? At least with Marshall we get someone that is proven and not a shot in the dark.

by lbacker2179 on Mar 8, 2010 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

we actually tried to match the offer by the Seahawks and Tj refused it at that point.. His pride got in the way. It ended up being a raw deal for Coles, TJ, and the Bengals. F*** TJ

Bryant is good when he is on form

Unfortunately he is not always on. has a chequered injury history also. If he is focused he will be a good signing.

by pilks1075 on Mar 8, 2010 5:21 PM EST reply actions

If he can't or won't block, the Bengals won't sign him.

The Bengals offensive scheme requires the WR’s to be good blockers on running and short slants. T.O. has always been a good blocker. If Bryant can’t or won’t block, the Bengals shouldn’t sign him. Get T.O.

John Clayton on Sportscenter just said

Bryant is option number one, they are also considering making a play on Brandon Marshall, although Seattle is the favorite. If both of those guys fall through, then they would discuss a contract with Terrell Owens.

by Kabash on Mar 8, 2010 6:58 PM EST reply actions

I'd prefer Bryant.

Signing him would push WR lower on our list of needs, which means that we could prioritize FS, G, and SLB, instead of reaching for a WR in the first. I’m still on the Iupati bandwagon, but I’m more and more open to the idea of Earl Thomas or Sergio Kindle.

by Big Sky Bengal on Mar 8, 2010 7:21 PM EST reply actions

DT's

We need to get deeper on our defensive line. It gets scary thin after Peko and Sims. In fact, I’d rather sign this before we sign a TE.

This is our year!

by Paul Cannon on Mar 8, 2010 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

meh

I think he would be ok, but nothing to be that excited about. It would be a solid replacement, but I think a major play at Brandon Marshall would indicate that they want to run at the title. Big difference.

boldin received 4 yrs 28 million i think

no way bryant should get more than boldin. If the bengals can sign him for around 5 million (6 million tops) a year i’d be for it

by who dey md on Mar 8, 2010 8:12 PM EST reply actions

T.O. will be in stripes this year

He has no other offer’s on the table at this point and has already publicly indicated he want’s to play with Chad in Cinci… I would be shocked if he leave’s without a deal..
