Based on who was left in this mock draft

this is the right pick. I would have rather had Iupati or Graham, but since they were both gone, Mays is a solid pickup. Normally I would prefer a safety with better cover skills, but in Zimm I trust, and he has shown that he is comfortable with a pure hitter back there in Roy Williams. Also, this kid is so young and fast, his coverage may improve (last year was not a good indication of it if you ask me, as he had a knee injury). My only real concern now is that if/when the NFL changes their rules to protect receivers across the middle (Ray Lewis taking off Ocho’s helmet last year anyone?) it may nullify him a bit. My 2 cents.

What about

Seattle takes Dez Bryant at 14 and CJ Spiller falls to us? I know it’s unlikely, but watch the tape on Spiller—he’s crazy fast, can return kicks, catch out of the backfield, etc. Imagine a two-back set with him and Benson…

Thats an interesting thought.

Dude is crazy talented and theres no doubt the Bengals could do great things with him. However, I’m not so sure there would be that much value added with that pick, with Leonard and Scott already on the roster. That said, he’d almost certainly be BPA at that point, and I would support the pick.

by Jaegner on Apr 11, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I know we have two pretty talented guys

in Scott and Leonard, but I’ve been watching the film on this guy and he’s off the chart. He seems to have great hands, good instincts and just explodes after the catch and out of his cuts. I think if by some miracle he’s still there we’d be nuts not to grab him.

If we want a guy like Spiller

and I think we already have him in Scott, we should wait for Ole Miss’ Dexter McCluster in the second.

Pass on 1st round Running back

Scott showed he has big play ability,If were going to take a RUnning back should be a thumper in the later rounds like Blount..

Aside from a couple weird picks,

I think this is a pretty good mock altogether.

Williams health

Roy has yet to prove he can make it through an entire season, so the Mays pick helps. Let him get his feet wet in a couple games and learn from Williams, then be the safety of the future. Letting Bryant learn from Ocho would be a good thing also, but I agree with Francis, what makes the difference as long as Brat is calling plays. Let the D carry the team until they get an innovative play caller.
Spiller would be nice, but what do you do with Leonard or Scott? How can you justify cutting one of them when they have already proven they can produce and Spiller is unknown?

I can't fathom this pick...

…unless, when I wasn’t looking, Al Davis has replaced Mike Brown. Mays is all hat and no cattle, a Raider in the making. I’d prefer Chad Jones in the second to Mays any day of the week- and twice on Sunday.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Apr 11, 2010 6:31 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Really?

Chad Jones is what people act like Mays is..people act like Mays is a workout warrior yet he had 3 years of production that people rated him a top 5 pick if he came out junior then a above average year after USC loss most of it’s defense.Theres a difference between your Vernon Gholsten workout warrior and a player like Mays who gives it his all every play.

Look at Orakpo he was labeled a workout warrior same with Vernon Davis,Mays is a football player who gives it his all if Zimmer thinks Roy has a place on our D then Mays has a spot on our D.

+1!

Mays lost a ton of money by staying at USC this past year. He’s gonna come out with a big chip on his shoulder much like Maualuga did for us this year.

Given the picks before I'd pick Maurkice Pouncey

or however the hell you spell his name. A truly Pro Bowl level center could do wonders for the offense…

by occams_tiger_teeth on Apr 12, 2010 2:47 AM EDT reply actions

I'd be fine with Pouncey

He may be a Pro Bowl Center later on like you said, and I’m sure the guy could play Guard at first to get on the field. If Iupati is gone, then Maurice is a good choice.

I’d also be fine with Mays. Roy Williams Jr. sounds pretty darn good to me.

by UpStateMike on Apr 12, 2010 8:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Pouncey would be a good pick

Pouncey is one of my favorite picks if Thomas,Mays & Byrant are gone but even if they picked him over them I wouldn’t complain because Good Olines will win games even if the rest of the offense is crappy.

my top 6 players are
1a.)Taylor Mays
1b.)Earl Thomas (doubtful he’ll even be available)
3.)Dez Byrant (Just don’t like fact Eugene Parker is his agent I can see a long and painful hold out)
4.)Sergio Kindle
5.)Maurice Pouncey
6.) Greshem

Will people stop crying offense

Will people stop crying and act like we have to go offense WR/TE in Rnd one? You do relize that there is more then a single round right? With 6 Picks in the first 4 rounds they should take BPA in the 1st round..If they Draft Mays in the 1st it doesn’t mean their ignoring the Offense because hey Guess what they can pick up the offensive players in 2nd & 3rd round

-1st Taylor Mays 1st
-2nd Take Gronk,Mccoy,Benn or top rated WR
3rd Take top Rated TE or WR
So Guess what not only did you get a younger, more athletic higher upside Roy Williams but you still got weapons for your offense.

More then likely the BPA is going to be Defense so those who act like we have to draft a WR in rnd one may start getting use to the idea that probably won’t happen.

PS,Though Byrant being available I could see why people would wanna go offense but I just don’t see it happening in the real draft.

by kazdey on Apr 12, 2010 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

I’d go

Rd. 1: BPA. Maybe a pass rusher, a DT or an OG (I don’t think Mays will be BPA )
Rd. 2: S or CB/WR/TE
Rd. 3: S or CB/WR/TE

It’s great to have options isn’t it?

This is our year!

Mays - Gronkowski

That would be an amazing first couple picks. Mays was much better than he has been given credit for, and Gronkowski is going to be a huge upgrade at TE.

by WesleyM on Apr 13, 2010 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Taylor Mays

Taylor Mays cannot cover. There is no way he is going to keep up with NFL receivers. His best position in the NFL may be as an outside linebacker.
