Mays, Gresham, Bryant Available @ 21 Possible? ..Not That Far From Being Possible
First of all I want to give a big shoutout to Cincy Jungle for providing the best Bengals info on the web. I started out here fanposting a lot of major tense and controversial issues dealing with the Bengals. I’ve made posts through that most people tend to shy away from conversing about i.e. signing Mike Vick, Drafting Crabtree last year, Major TE problems and our weaknesses. There were a lot of topics that I posted on here that were controversial but also topics that were key issues. Today I return from my hiatus from my distinct concentration on school and my currently busy life. Although I haven’t made many recent active posts I have been keeping up with the team by daily stalking Cincy Jungle and PFT. Enough about me though I’ts time to do some major posting…
Lately I have been flying through mock drafts analyzing everyone from ESPN draft gurus Mel Kiper & Todd McShay to Walter Football & Rick Gosselin. I have seen the Bengals in each of these mocks collectively either being pegged to select the athletic freak who is known as..Taylor Mays, the top-flight tight end who is every safety’s nightmare… Jermaine Gresham, and the superstar caliber receiver perceived to be a character issue risk… Dez Bryant. There have been major trades such as McNabb to the Skins, Holmes to the Jets and Marshall to the Phins. The reason I am posting this is because I believe that there is a good possibility of all 3 of these players being on the board at 21. If you think I’m crazy atleast hear my argument for thinking of us having this good fortune..
Gresham: Through all of the mock drafts I look at and all of the teams that pick prior to us I see a slim need for a tight end. Even teams who could look at Gresham have other major positional needs or already have great tight ends. The only threat to Gresham not being at 21 is a possible trade up by The Patriots, Ravens or the Cardinals. With this class having some depth at tight end I fail to believe Gresham won’t be there at 21. With this being a deep defensive stud packed draft I don’t see any team that needs or would want to jump on Gresham more than the Bengals. There are also question marks surrounding Gresham’s health and recovery from his season ending injury he suffered in college. I believe unless by some random act of God that Gresham will be available at 21 and even if he isn’t there is still Grownkowski or Hernandez, the world will not be over if he is not there.
Mays: Everyone knows that Taylor Mays is an absolute freak and has the tools to become one of the most feared safeties at the elite level. I believe Mays and the Bengals are a match made in heaven and should be the pick. I would like nothing more than for Mays to eat Hines Ward’s children. When I examine whether he will be available or not there are only a few teams that threaten that possibility: The Pete Carrol coached Seattle Seahawks who pick twice before us and no one has ever seen how Carroll drafts or what approach he takes and he is enamored with Mays. There is also the Raiders and Al Davis’s infatuation with combine freaks, but the Raiders have too many other needs and are full at safety, but they are still dangerous, You never know what Al will do. The thing that works in our favor with Mays is that even teams with safety needs there are safeties like Eric Berry and Earl Thomas who are believed to be picked before Mays due to their ability to cover better than Mays which is his weakness. When and how soon Berry and Thomas are taken will dictate if Taylor will fall to us. I also fear the Steelers taking Mays or the Cowboys trading up for Mays. Either way I feel there is about a 75% chance Mays is still there at 21.
Bryant: Besides Tim Tebow, where Dez Bryant will be drafted is a close second in the major questions of the 2010 draft. When I look at the trades for receivers that have happened I believe that those trades have done nothing but helped our chances of Bryant being available @ 21. The threats of teams drafting Dez has been significantly minimized. Prior to these trades Dez’s possible suitors could have been Cleveland, Seattle, Jacksonville, Denver, Miami, Jets, New England, Dallas, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Cleveland has given Dez the "Michael Crabtree treatment" with cancelling his last visit with him which indicates to me they are not interested. Jacksonville is on record as saying that Bryant is no longer on their list. Seattle is still a threat especially now with them being out of the Brandon Marshall sweepstakes, but they have major needs at Safety and Offensive Tackle with Walter Jones retiring. Miami is definitely eliminated from the Dez Bryant sweepstakes after trading for Marshall, They have to address other major issues with their team and with Marshall’s new deal I find it hard to believe The Tuna will dish out even more cash to the WR position especially with Davonne Bess still on the roster as a respectable no. 2 and looking to thrive in that role. The reason I believe Denver and Pittsburgh are not complete threats anymore b/c Marshall and Holmes where both perceived as problem childs for their teams and that’s why they were shipped out so it wouldn’t make sense for them to bring in another perceived problem child? The New York Jets eliminated themselves from the Dez Bryant sweepstakes after fulfilling their need with Santonio Holmes, but there is still a slight possibility. That leaves the only threat with teams to pick Dez: Seattles,Dallas, New England & Baltimore. The only way Dez isn’t there at no. 21 is if any of these teams trade up to select him or Seattle decides to take him.
After dishing out these reasons this is leading me to there believing there is a high possibility of all three players being available the only question is who do we take if all 3 are there @ 21?

Totally agree
Ya take Mays you’ve got a starter instantly. Gresham is nice but you can draft the TE from arizona in the second who is not far off talent wise. Bam! two starters already.

I took Gresham out of the equasion already
I think i’ts Mays, Iupati or Bryant. These are three great options for us, and I’d be happy with any of them.
+1
Iupati is another pick I would love at #21..

I actually wouldn't be mad if we pick
Mays, Iupati, Campbell, Thomas, Price or I hate to say it, Graham (B/c he’s from that school up north). Not to mention the prospects that are definitely going to be gone by the time 21 comes. If there’s a remote chance. Like Berry or Suh.
No Gresham or Bryant.
Reservations
Gresham, to a team with a fully functional offense and coordinator, should be a no-brainer. Unfortunately, that ain’t us and that sure as hell ain’t Brat- who is apparently a no-brainer his ownself. In this reality, Gresham is a complete waste of money.
I fear that Taylor Mays, as freakishly gifted an athlete as he is, fails to address our actual safety need- to wit; someone who can actually cover somebody. Do we really need another Roy Williams?
As for Bryant, I think it’s really possible to get the same size, speed, talent, and athleticism- plus better work ethic, later in the draft( see Demaryius Thomas, Carlton Mitchell, Riley Cooper, Dorin Dickerson, Joe Webb, Riley Cooper, Marcus Easley). I really don’t question Bryant’s character. It’s just a question of economics.
My pick? I’m gonna go out on a limb here- and play the Mikey as The Redeemer card, by taking a chance on an even more freakishly athlete than Mays, Carlos Dunlap.
Of course, I’d take Jason Pierre Paul if he happened to fall.

Dunlap & Jason Pierre Paul
both of these guys have also been put in the same category as Mays, I believe 21 for Dunlap could be too high but JP @ 21 would be nice but would he be able to start immediately with the Odom Geathers, Michael Johnson Fanene & Rucker rotation?
