Broncos Trade Tight End Tony Scheffler To The Detroit Lions
With all of the conjecture that the Bengals could be in the running for Broncos Tight End Tony Scheffler, it made you think, do the Bengals really have a shot? Yesterday, they probably did, if they were interested. On Monday, they have no shot.
According to Adam Schefter, the Broncos traded Scheffler to the Detroit Lions in a three way trade that sent linebacker Ernie Sims from Detroit to the Eagles and the Broncos getting an undisclosed pick.
So you can file this in the same file that we filed it last week. Amusing chatter.

Blocking isn’t the problem though. Dan Coats can block really well. In fact, everything about that guy is block-like (hands included).

i saw that
and they gave up a 7th.
would i basically trade shirley, nicholson, kieft, rowe, mann, etc for scheffler? fuck yes.
the only 5th rd pick we’ve really hit on is huber. and we probably could have gotten him in the 6th.
RIP Slim.
think the 7th went to the eagles

Last year, was in my opion your best draft.. lot of good value picks.. will this year be the same?
12:25
Marvin Lewis: Last year’s draft we were drafting pretty high in the rotation. We’re drafting low this year. Last year people new the names of our picks.
Whether Scheffler would have fit in or not....
for a 5th round pick it would have been worth the risk(if you call a 5th pick a risk). It would have been something new and different. Maybe would have brought some excitment and interest to sell tickets. MB thought winning would bring the fans clamoring back into their seats. He better think again. A proven TE for a 5th round pick. MB asleep at the wheel, again ZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Sims for a 5th
wouldn’t have been a bad trade either. But I guess when you compare Sims to Shirley or Rowe or Mann, it’s obvious who the better player is.
Mike Brown is ..
smoking banana peels atm, please dont bother him with real football biz..ty and come again
Tired of Mocks?
Anybody else tired of following all the major newscasters having us draft Gresham? I just checked ESPN and SI.com and both sites have us drafting the guy. I just want some creativity…Is that too much to ask? You know, somebody new to speculate about.
This is our year!
I think we don't realize how caught up the Bengals may be in him
It seems like the Bengals are really interested in TE. If none of the safeties fall, Dez Bryant doesn’t fall, and Pierre-Paul doesn’t fall, I’m not sure who else I’d rather see the Bengals pick.
that’s a good point. We took a look at Mays, and Iupati, but nothing suggests that they are head over heals about either of these guys. I’m coming around to the idea of Gresham. He’s a big target for Palmer, would probably improve the passing game, is big enough to block NFL linebackers etc ect. The only problem is his knee, and the fact that we don’t use the TE as a receiver often.
Here’s another Q though: If we keep using 2 TE sets, shouldn’t there be a lot more opportunities to use the TE in the passing game? Considering our TE situation last year, it’s no wonder we didn’t throw the ball more to that position, but theoretically having a TE who can catch and block would be huge bonus in our offense.

Here we go again
Oh well, Bengals blow it again. Can we ever expect the Bengals to be proactive in putting together a Super Bowl team? I don’t believe for one second that Mike Brown does not have the money to acquire talent.. or do they honestly believe that the life forms we have at TE are “the bomb?” We get Antonio Bryant & Matt Jones, and we don’t need to do anymore? That’s enough? MIKE BROWN, WE NEED MORE ON OFFENSE!! Unless the Bengals were privy to something about Scheffler, why wouldn’t we give up a 5th (ONLY A FIFTH!) for him? For crying out loud!! Are they saying that what will be available to us in the draft is a better option than Scheffler? Perhaps, the organization is putting all their eggs in the one basket of Chase Coffman? I realize that it wise to build thru the draft, but this is ridiculous! We have one of the worst scouting departments in the League!! A 5th for Scheffler would have freed us up to focus on adding to other areas early.. such as Left Guard, Safety, Defensive Line, or even another Wide Out. Now, assuming the Bengals are planning to be drafting a TE early, we will miss out on quality help in one of those areas. Bravo!!!!!!!
I'd relax on missing Scheffler
He’s a good TE, but missing him isn’t going to break the season. I am increasingly sold on Gresham’s immense talent and clean bill of health, if the Bengals choose to draft him. Pierre-Paul may fall to 21. You just have to remember that the Bengals were a playoff team last year.
I'm 100% against a TE in the first

but they were they because of their Defense. Their Offense was woeful and inept

Unfortunately, that seems to be the case
So, any thought of them trading up is a pipe dream. That would show they are serious about improvement. Can’t have that!! Conservative they will remain.
no he won’t be moved. He is rehabbing his ACL and this just means they will run more 2 TE sets.

Marvin Lewis..
chat today was weak.only thing I took out of it was two things…
1.Injury report .. Marvin Lewis: Reggie seems to have recovered from the Achilles injury. He is now as we know a free agent player. We’ve had the opportunity to work Reggie out and see if we can re-sign him
Marvin Lewis: We were able to address some of Chase’s related injuries last fall with surgery. He’s done a good job in rehab last fall and this offseason. We’re confident he can compete for a starting job in training camp.
Marvin Lewis: Domata has recovered well and is working hard in the offseason program. Tank seems to be back with rest 100 percent. Antwan seems to be on pace from his Achilles injury
2. Possible Trade Talks… Marvin Lewis: Generally teams call around days prior to the draft and the morning of the draft and get a feel for teams moving forward or back. No one really does much draft postion trading until they are on the clock
i love how everyone gets bent out of shape everytime another team makes a move.
In the past month I’ve seen WAYYY TOOOO many people on here whining about:
Brandon Marshall
Tedd GInn Jr
Tony Scheffler
Anquan Boldin
WTF….
(A) The Bengals can’t have their hands in every effing offseason move and (B) HOW do you know that they didn’t attempt to get any of these guys?….trust me, you don’t, and they’re were 29 other teams that missed out on these guys too.
Every team is waiting this offseason to drive down market prices of both FA contracts and Trade Value.
Once again we’re looking at three teams that Pick before us in the draft. Philly has the 137th pick in the Fifth round where the Bengals have the 152nd pick.
Yes it is true that you can strike out on 4th and 5th round picks, however it’s also true that you could strike out on one of these trades yall keep bitchin about.
If Scheffler comes in here and pops his Achilles in training camp, and you no longer have the draft pick you could have been developing for the future….then what? It’s a risk you take yes, but look up at the Mistake on the lake. Cleveland FO took “the time is now” approach, and look where they are: only desperate to re-acquire draft picks so that they can rebuild yet again.
For F Sake…. have a little faith

I agree, but it would have been nice if the FO had been a little more proactive for a big need.

to be clear
i’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice to get some of these guys, and yes creativity is a must. All i’m saying is we have to be realists just as much as we dare to dream. Many a front office has remained silent in FA this offseason. The Bengals kept THE TANK…. upgraded their Wideout position by switching out Coles for AB.
They haven’t been “sitting on their hands” as some suggest

True
I think our off season has been very underrated. Do you guys realize that our FA’s… actually want to come back to Cincinnati? That’s a great sign, especially for a young team and points to great leadership on the part of Zim and Lewis. If we couple this great talent from the draft we will have a recipe for being a winning ball club.
Even though I’m not convinced about Scheffler being some sort of game changer, for a 5th rounder its impossible to go wrong. Regardless of the, woulda coulda shoulda… I think our team is headed in a good direction.
the only one that irked me
was scheffler. and that’s only because reggie kelly is as of yet still not on the roster. i have always liked kelly and think he is underrated. coffman can fill the utecht spot that they signed him for and we can run some double te sets. rex ryan, who is known to speak the truth most of the time, said reggie kelly was a nightmare because he blocked like an extra tackle. maybe he’s not as big as roland, but if we can run the unbalanced line with someone who can occasionally catch the ball, it makes it that much more dangerous.
i just feel like the TE spot is integral to stopping run, run, pass, punt.
RIP Slim.
also
i think too many people are letting osu bias seep in with the ginn stuff. yes, he’s a good return man, but brings absolutely nothing in the passing game. i’d rather have cosby who is decent and showed some flashes and scott who plays well at RB.
RIP Slim.
I am actually warming up to Gresham.
There’s no doubt that this guy is a unique talent, with the biggest criticism of him on here being his blocking ability. This argument, while not entirely unfounded, does assume quite a bit. The tools are there, and it’s not unlikely that he won’t be able to use his size and strength to become a competent blocker in the NFL.
I understand that the Chase Coffman situation does a lot to put people off of drafting a fairly similiar TE in Gresham. Coffman, however, was unable to get on the field in last year’s run dominant offense. I’ve read quotes from Bratkowski where he states that the passing offense is due to get the same kind of attention that the running game got last year. So Chase’s inability to fit into last year’s offensive scheme doesn’t really do much to foretell how Gresham would do in this year’s scheme.
good job emphasizing last year and this year
i think everyone was initially scared at the prospective OLine this time last year, only to find out they were a dominant force in the ground game. And if you think about it, that position group comes away with something far more important than many realize: familiarity and consistency. The best way to get a group comfortable is to stick to the meat and potatoes if you will.
Now that we have a formidable….and more importantly….. complete returning cast, now we can see how/if they spice things up. THe OLine has to work well as a unit, and now I believe they do, and we’ll see a little more this year as you alluded.
With that in mind….. Gresham and Coffman could be used in the intermediate pass game instead of fielding 8 run blockers that effing maul out 2000 yards rushing like last year.
Well done Jaeg’s

They must be thinking TE at #1
I don’t see how you can pass up a young TE for a 5th rounder, and pass up Ginn for a 4th/5th round pick. I would rather have a established player than one that is 50/50. Ginn could have returned kicks and let Scott play 15-20 snaps on offense spelling Benson. Nobody knows what Gresham is going to be. He still isn’t 100%, and you need your 1st pick to be a 100% contributor. The Bengals are going to take the grodkoski kid, however you spell it, from Arizona, and it will be the Levi Jones nonsense all over again. Book it.
AGREE BENGALS CAN'T BE INVOLVED IN EVERY TRADE........
I just wish they would belong in ONE !!!!! If anyone else is interested in Gresham say NE you can bet they will outmanuver the Bengals just like NO did a couple of years ago on Sedrick Ellis. Yea, Scheffler could come in here and get hurt, just like Shirley did (a former 5th rounder)or he could just flop like the coutless 5ths over the past few years, Jeff Rowe, Mo Mann, etc. that have done just that.
i’m not trying to be a smart ass, i’m just trying to be realistic. We don’t have the patriots FO…. we have coaches that work double time and a dipshit owner, that’s it.
i’m trying to figure out why people are surprised that the team isn’t making trades… when they never do. you’re certainly entitled to be pissed off about it…..but surprised? why, it never happens, and until old Mikey and krazy Katie are out of the picture……….it ain’t happening.
I don’t like it either, but it is what is.

I'm not mad, I'm not surprised .....
I’m frustrated. MB’s mindset is if they have a winning season that will fill the seats. It didn’t work last year, why does he think it will this year. Making a token trade would show a williness to do something different. Scheffler for a 5th round pick would have been a VALUE trade. The odds of this 5th rounder providing what Scheffler could have provided, even if was for one season, are slim.Maybe they have their hearts set on Grisham. Personally, I’ll be surprised if they draft him. My quess is if one of those top OT like Davis out of Rutgers falls they will take him. Even if they do take him what would have been the downside of trading for Scheffler as well. Is this 5th rounder going to dramatically change the face of the Bengal roster ????
NFL Post website
has two articles in regards to the Scheffler trade. Matt Bowen explains Scheffler gives the Lions an upgrade on their offense. While Wes Bunting is predicting the Broncos will try and manuver into the bottom of the first round and pick Gresham. As I said earlier, I would be surprised if we see a repeat of the Sedrick Ellis draft.
SCHEFFLER GOES TO LIONS! NOOOOOOOOOOO
First off, anyone who wants my season tickets they are up for sale, I just can not accept the fact that we didn’t trade for a for a disgruntled tight end that the Broncos have been trying to get rid of since they drafted him. I’m out Season is over, Mike Brown is cheap and blah blah blah blah blah…..
Seriously guys, if they have any confidence in Chase and they plan on drafting a tight end this year then you don’t make the move for Tony. Seems pretty obvious to me.
Another thing to consider
is that while it hasn’t happened yet, it does seem like the team wants to resign Reggie Kelly. If that’s the case, this trade would have been pointless.
careful yall, we’re starting to look like mindless bungalized idiots up in here…..
